2009 Player Review - # 37 Matthew Warnock

Matthew Warnock – Matty had a really consistent season last year and he continued it in 2009. He missed the last four games due to ankle surgery but he did some really good jobs on guys like Warren Tredrea and David Hale. The next step in Matty's development is to play on the gun forwards like Jonathan Brown and Nick Riewoldt. His preparation, attitude and work-rate are first-class – Sean Wellman on Melbournefc.com.au

Sure seems like Matty is coming along fine, each season stepping up a bit. Can see no reason why this wont continue. Good efforts from Warnock:)

I am pleased with warnock's improvement. A couple of years ago i thought he wouldn't make it, now he's a very reliable key defender.

Another great pick from the rookie list (quite a few now)

Onwards and upwards Matty

The nocker is good value. Strong and determined he is. Doesn't panic either. Shame his brother didn't join us then we could have had oulselves a fine pair of nockers.

If he can improve again next year we're in business.

I reckon we already are in business with Warnock. Some of his work this year was great.

Great couple of years.

Late starter so I hope he can go into his 30s.

I just wish the powers-that-be would allow our backman to spoil with their right hand...

Always with the left...

It was only you and everyone else who'd ever seen him play, myself included. I saw him play at Sandy a few times in his earlier years and he looked like a complete lemon. He remained on the list for a long time before really showing anything that the mug supporter might recognise as signs of a good enough player. At the start of last year I thought it was a joke that he was still on the list

Big thumbs up from me to the club for persevering.

great player...hope he can take the next step next year

does anyone no how many goals were kicked against him this year?

Solid as a rock and still improving. Another top five finish in the Bluey coming up, I think ................. and continued development will see him as a cornerstone of a very good defence for quite a few years.

Yep. Solid. The only word you want to hear when people are talking about a backman.

I've mentioned this before but I feel Frawley and Garland are better players then Warnock. Rivers is a different player but miles superior. Warnock is a good spoiler but thats about it. Hopelessly overrated player who for some reason finshed 4th in our best ad fairest last year. The fact he kept Frawley out of the team made me angry. The opposition actually want the ball in his hands because he cannot use it effectively. Couldn't and shouldn't figure highly in our best and fairest again. Dean Bailey's love child. Neale Daniher knew he was a dude

Well I should hope so!

As for your dislike of Warnock, I don't necessarily disagree that his kicking is a bit iffy, but he's a full-back, and his job is to first and foremost negate his opponent. He does this more often than not. He doesn't just spoil, he takes marks in front of packs, he gets back to help out, and, unlike some other defenders we've had over the years, he isn't shy to push up the ground either. Of course the opposition want the ball in his hands, he isn't Davey or Grimes, is he? But he's doing a fine job as a full back, and his 4th in last year's Bluey is a testament to that.

Rubbish.

Frawley is a gorilla tamer. Garland's best position is on a HBF or as a ute. And Rivers cannot play FB or CHB; isn't quick enough and his best position is a loose man.

Warnock may not have the skills of Garland and the offensive smarts of Frawley, but that would only be a problem if we were asking him to have the skills of Garland and the offensive smarts of Frawley.

He is a diligent, hard working, and competitive backman who can close down some very good players, he will only get better as he sees less footy.

The most underrated player on our list. Had a great year exemplified by our need to move him forward to throw a game and then send him off for early surgery to ensure we did not win another.

Second consecutive top 5 finish in the Bluey too if I remember correctly. Might be underrated by supporters, but clearly not by the coaches.

The most underrated player on our list.

Defends the strong KPF, Rarely gets beaten in the 50/50 or 40/60 and anything in his favour he swallows it up. Get a dominant midfield and Warnock will rack up those shut outs. 1st picked in the back 6.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
