Exactly. People who think Watts and Jurrah can handle it next year are moronic. They need a big body to help protect them, clear the path for their leads, take an opposing teams top defender but most of all show them what hard work is.

Watts and Jurrah are filled to the brim with natural ability, compared to Miller who has got where he is through incredibly hard work at training and in the gym. Those 2 young boys need to see a big, older bloke like Miller working hard and mentoring them. It feels strange to say but Miller at this current point is absolutely vital to our development and therefore is important to our future.

If some of his aggression and commitment can rub off on Watts then he worth keeping around.

Stewie Lowe had a late resurgence learning how to kick goals when Peter Hudson became a specialist coach. It added years to his career.

Robbo also learned relatively late in his football life how to "not miss" a set shot. In the end they both became reliable set shots.

I also dont think looking to hand the ball off helps as he looks disappointed when this option is covered. Wouldnt help confidence much.

Perfect post in my opinion. I am a fan of Miller however i do acknowledge that he needs to kick more goals. He has a good pair of hands, has a big body and no matter how much we are losing by, he keeps presenting. Over pre season himself and Newton need to practice kicking goals. All Miller needs is confidence in having a shot. If he misses, he misses every single player in the AFL misses shots on goal.

He could be the perfect CHF for us because he never stops presenting at the ball. Time for the FD to show some faith and instill some confidence in him because he needs it at the moment. Simple tell him inside 50 have a shot no matter what it is your job. Give him a firm plan on what he needs to be doing and that is kicking goals.

Of course Miller is required, this is why i have said all along not to get rid of Robbo. Now that he's gone Miller's getting the no. 1 defender!! When or if Miller gets dropped, looks like it will be Watts or Jurrah!

I think this is just the club coming to a realisation that if we were to put Miller on the trade table, he wouldn't command anything decent, and after all these years investing time into him, they may have decided that we're better off signing him to a relatively small contract. Hopefully, as Hannibal said, his physicality and experience can help out Watts, Jurrah and whoever else gets the task of playing the Melbourne forward line.

If I was a better footy player, had better hamstrings, and could kick straighter, I too could be a 60-goal forward.

I think you make a funny point but I feel that Miller doesn't need to learn how to get better hammys but he does need to learn how to kick

His current kicking style is a learned behavior so therefore he could relearn the behavior, then he could easily become a 60 goal forward IMO

I see this offered up time and time again..and its not a retort at you per se dee-l... but exactly of what value is miller going to be to GC ( or anyone for that matter ) in 2 years. If we cant make some return on him ..what anyone else?

Well theyr'e going to have a lot of young players & will need mature bodied & minds who lead a good example on & off field.

They'll have picks to trade & in my opinion will trade for a few mature players of the right morals. Hard trainers who'll help mold the kids.

rpfc's hamstring comment was about himself. He was taking a shot at the idea that 'if only X then Y would be a good player'.

I cant think of any other reason for him beingrequired"

This:

His big body is required in the forward line and his leadership amongst a young group is valued.

so are we saying hes out there all but purely as a bodyguard ?? not good enough for me. All forwards need to hurt oppositions on scoreboards other wise teach the other the requisite skills to look after selves...that and 5-10 kilko :D

If he is to provide a lead up linking role firstly.. I could come at this.. But there is no real room in todays footy for muscle purely for muscle's sake.

Not really. Don't underestimate a bit of leadership for a predominantly young group of kids.

Miller is leadership by hesitation !!

I have said this before and I will say it again.

If Jack Watts gleans from Brad Miller how to get the best out of himself and his body in the gym and in the track his pay packet would have been well spent.

However, anyone thinking he is apart of our flag tilt are hoping for things he cannot deliver.

You're asking too much of him.

is Miller the only one that can show Watts this?

Newton cannot.

It's leadership by example. Bate isn't a leader of men. Miller is (when his confidence is up).

I'm talking forward tall prospects here, they require a different body shape a large upper body, a strong core, and enormous amount of run in the legs.

They need to do more gym work than the mids (except Beamer) and have about the same running capacity.

Riewoldt gut runs as well as Cousins in his prime.

I want Watts to train as hard as Miller does, and do as much work in the gym as him. His influence can only be a positive in that regard.

Leadership is important, in the summer even moreso. I still remember having a few chats with the those at the club and they said the midfielders that worked with Woewodin would put in more effort because they saw the work that Shane did in the gym and on the track.

yep, i got that. i was trying to make the point (probably badly :-) that millers afl related short comings were not a genetic issue, as mentioned by rpfc in his own case, but just a collection of bad habits on the part of miller himself and more easily rectified

cheers

Hope Miller stays as I believe he is value to the team and shows good leadership to the younger guys barring his kicking.

As far his kicking for goal goes I think he could give away the habit of continuously flipping the ball over in his hands as he is moving in to take a shot. This may be a nervous habit. He just needs to concentrate a bit more and have some expectation and confidence that the ball will go through for a goal.

in 2008 miller had one of the highest percentages kicking for goal in the AFL this year and last year he had the same amount of scoring shots, so he did find a solution to his wayward kicking,he just has to remember what he did two years ago and go back to it, the problem with a lot of people, and miller is one of them is that when they improve something they start believing that they are a natural at it, when in fact they are not, they forget the basics. Miller needs to go back in his mind to 2008,and remember what he was doing right, he then can improve once again. jarra is going to be more value to the club as a centre half forward, his kicking inside 50 to a forward Target is up there with the best in the AFL,If he plays more then 20 games next year expect him to have around 45 goals, and around 40 goal assists

Miller would be a nice fit in a winning side. I am thinking he signs and stays on for 2 more. If we were willing to trade him, this year is the year to do it due to the draft being touted as a weak crop.

Miller is [censored]

That's a real stupid reply, that kind of post is just a waste of time, grow up a bit add something useful, why is he [censored], would you say it to his face, I think not, just because you are a name less figure behind your computer mask, does not mean you forget your manners, little boy

Fair enough the comment was unnecessary and no i wouldnt say it to his face because his massive. But time to face facts the guy isn't a good footballer. He occasionaly will play a good game then play about six shockers. He cant kick straight, he fumbles too often and he is no real threat up foward. The guy gets treated like royalty though. They talk about his leadership all the time and it annoys me. He might prepare himself thoroughly but not once has he shown actual leadership on the field. Always misses the crucial set shots, and goes missing fair too often. He tries his guts out and has given his all for the Melbourne Football Club but how is he possibly 'a required player' after we got rid of Russell Robertson a foward that can actual show leadership by kicking goals and asserting himself on a game

miller to train watts? WTF??

those who can't play should teach?! whats the training staff for? should have kept simon godgrey on the list just because of his running skills.

I think rfpc is saying that Miller can be an example for how Watts should go about his training. Lets hope Miller stays away from Watts when it comes to goal kicking!
