Davey declines $2.5m offer

AARON Davey did more than commit his future to Melbourne on Tuesday, he turned his back on a staggering offer from Fremantle worth $2.5 million over four years.

The offer, predicated not on a trade with the Demons but him walking through to the Dockers via the pre-season draft, was worth $625,000 a season.

It is understood that the package involved a third-party arrangement with a major mining and resources company which would have paid a portion of Davey's salary to be involved with one of its indigenous health programs.

The amount, believed to be a six-figure sum, was to sit outside of Fremantle's player payments and therefore be exempt from salary cap constraints.

Maybe we need to look at this differently, because with Davey we're getting much more than his on-field contribution. Locking him in for 4 years as a player means locking in his indigenous mentorship role too, making it much more likely that LJ, Wona, Bennell & Jetta will continue to enjoy their time at the Dees together, and more importantly, will not be swayed by offers from other clubs that are bound to come their way during that period. That also applies to any other talented indigenous players that come to the Dees during that time.

That part of his staying can't be underestimated. You would have to respect the advice of someone who has sacrificed himself.

It's got nothing to do with race. As was mentioned in the Chris Knights thread, as soon as his brother became a pilot, we was less settled, but before that he was fine. I don't think you can underestimated the difference between living in a remote outback area and living in a city full of skyscrapers. If there are others there that you can relate too, I'm sure it's made a whole lot easier. I would have thought LJ was a little different from any other player indigenous or otherwise. His changing landscape has surely been far more drastic than many others. For that reason, Aaron, as the more senior player, plays a big part in his life.

Furthermore, when I used the "indigenous angle" line, I wasn't just referring to keeping LJ, I was also alluding to the Aaron Davey scholarship, for indigenous players.
