WA Draft Prospects

I've been reading various thoughts and opinions on the draft ranging from experts through to amateurs and it's interesting that, despite the fact that WA won the national carnival, there are so few players from their team in contention for first round draft selection.

You hear Morabito and Lucas being mentioned as top 10 picks but that's about it. Jetta and Black are from WA but didn't play in the carnival and a couple of others are too young to be drafted but I'm wondering why it is that there's such a heavy concentration on Victorians when the two Vic teams performed so poorly at the Carnival?

GOOD POINT ,ALTHOUGH WHEN ONE DISECTS THE ALL AUSTRALIAN TEAM ,YOU FIND

2009 AFL Under-18 All-Australian team

B: Andrew Hooper (Victoria Country) Blayne Wilson (Western Australia) Bradley Sheppard (Western Australia)

HB: Josh Toy (Victoria Metro) Daniel Talia (Victoria Metro) David Swallow (Western Australia)

C: Anthony Morabito (Western Australia) Dustin Martin (Victoria Country) Mitchell Duncan (Western Australia)

HF: Kane Lucas (Western Australia) Jack Darling (Western Australia) Gary Rohan (Victoria Country)

F: Brandon Matera (Western Australia) Matthew Panos (South Australia) Ben Cunnington (Victoria Country)

Foll: James Craig (South Australia) Jack Trengove (South Australia) Tom Scully (Victoria Metro)

Int: Luke Tapscott (South Australia) Ryan Harwood (Tasmania) Dylan McNeil (NSW/ACT)

Travis Colyer (Western Australia)

Coach: Andrew Lockyer (Western Australia) — Assistant coach: Brenton Phillips (South Australia)

Blayne Wilson has been picked up by Gold Coast,Sheppard has been talked about as a late first round or early 2nd.

Woewoeden whom coaches him thinks he could be a great pick up.Ditto- Lucas.

Swallow and Darling are too young for this years Draft- expected to go 1&2 next year to GC.Matera also expected to go to GC. Colyer,Duncan talked about as as second round picks. Morabito will go top5.Also have alook at last years All Australian, the WA players were picked up, but very late or rookie--Pearce,Deboer,Walters.,although the standouts went early- Naitanui,Rich,Hill.

Also, in my opinion andI have been watching these kids for over 40 years now- they are more equal ability this year, not as many standouts. Actually, I feel the draft will leave alot of extremely good footballers except not many that become champions. Except SCULLY and MARTIN.

I also think that recruiters tend to pick players from their own state if they can. Wait and see how many are picked from SA -Iam tipping 6

I your opinion is Martin better than Trengove? should MFC take Martin at pick 2?

It is my opinion that Martin has temendous upside. He basically came from nowhere these championships. By memory in his last game he had 21kicks up to half time and just was outstanding. He dwilted to have 27 and kicked a goal. He was and is no where as fit as some of these big name players. He is also, the best kick amongst these up and comers.I feel he is another Buckley type. Trengrove, is definately better at this stage -but has the upside, improvement. Also rate another young lad- Josh Toy- he seems to be the forgotton one- mainly because he is suppossed to be picked up by GC. HASN'T AS YET. I would rate him also as top 5,with a hell of upside..This is what Barry Prendergast, Turnbull, Connolly have to decide. In recruiting, one has to also look at the current playing list and where these new recruits fit in.It is called the Macro picture.I am more concentrating on talls. Will be looking at a few today. Give my update later.

Josh Toy would go 1 or 2, but he is GC bound. No doubt about that.

I'm torn over Martin and Trengove.

No matter which one I settle on, I have a sick feeling in my stomach from letting the other go... For me its now definitely between these 2.

Yeah seems to be little available infomation about the WA guys, which is a real disadvantage for us and anyone outside WA.

Its like they're keeping the hype 'in house', so to speak and its a good move for them because as you mention, WA flogged everyone else in the championships and there seems to be some talent going unnoticed.. or more precisely 'under-valued'

WA had 9 representitives to VC & SA with 4 and VM with 3.. so that says a lot to me

I think its more an indication that a lot of the guns for WA are ineligible for this year's draft.

And also that the media is more focused on the players in Victoria.

It is no indication of what the Recruitment Managers know or don't know about these players.

Yeah, i might have gone off on my own tangent

WJ was talking about 1st round.. i was thinking Bennell, Nev Jetta type picks

Matera would imo have been a 1st rounder if available and yeah, the media focus thing too

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

GAMEDAY: Rd 15 vs North Melbourne

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
