Looking at the current draft crop and examining our developing list, I believe we need to gain a top class rover-Scully, a top class ruck rover type- Trengove type or Morabito. Furthermore, a fast wingman- Blease, a ruckman-this will depend on the performance of Meeson and Spencer in 2010-however, I feel we could easily buy a marque ruckman in late 2010 for 2011 if needed.

I do however see another major requirement being a versatile tall, preferably a forward.Ben Griffiths or Temel would be ideal.

Apart from these, I feel if we only have, say four picks for this draft ,this will not disappoint me. What are your thoughts, any other major weaknesses do you see?

After this draft I believe we will have stregth in 2 important areas: Key position backman and Midfield

STREGTHS:

1. KPB: Warnock, Frawley, Garland, Rivers, McNamara and Martin* (Martin is versatile enough to play ruck and forward, but also key back if injuries)

2. Midfield: Scully, Trengove, Grimes, Morton, Sylvia, Davey, Mclean, Moloney, Jones, Blease, Strauss, Green and Bruce

However, I believe we still have some holes to fill... luckily I don't believe there is any gaping holes anymore.

HOLES THAT NEED FILLING THROUGH TRADING AND DRAFTING:

1. one more defensive minded small defender- the only 2 we currently have in Bell and Cheney... I don't rate either very much

2. one more quality key forward- Watts, Jurrah and Bate are a great start, but we really do need 1 more quality one

3. one more quality crumbing forward- all our smaller forwards are more flankers than crumbers (Pettard, Jetta, Maric, Wona etc)

4. one more ruckman- I actually like Jamar, and Spenser and Meesan have potential, but the bombers showed how catastrophic it can be having no good ruckman

5. one tagger- To take over post McDonald... a Picken type would be ideal

The good thing is, that apart from a quality key forward, all the other 4 are relatively easier to mind (compared to quality midfielder and KPB). Small indigenous forwards, small defenders, ruckmna and taggers are often found via low draft selections and rookie picks.

I think our recruiting staff has done exceptionally well. They are building a team, and have done so by stocking up in the 2 most difficult areas to build a team- key backman and midfielders. We are on our way

if picks 1 @ 2 go on mids , we need in this order 1- power forward

2 - ruckman

Cheney will become a very good player, Aussie will be great roaming around inside 50 once we have LJ ,Watts and (insert FF) playing together on regular basis. Blease , Stauss + picks 1 @ 2 means we have 4 first year mids. i believe we are sitting very nicely. we need more games into our young list. until we get better in the ruck stocks we can learn to play to oppositions rucks

Very interesting to see our recruitment manager sending emails out to renew membership- I would have thought a marketing person would have done this so Barry could find another wonder recruit similar to Liam

In answer to the OP regarding recruitment requirements ove rthe next 2-3 years: -

* recruiting more quality players (via draft/trade) in area's of: -

- forwards ( dependant upon what we achive this 2009 draft)

- midfield / ruck ( you can never have enough quality midfielders; we need a ruck to support the list - we need one who can hold his own in the ruck and can go forward and kick goals - a Brad Ottens clone would be ideal ).

who in particular you ask?

- I don't know just yet. If anyone does, fess up. ;)

If Jamar can hold up physically ,I believe he can do the job of rucking and kicking goals up forward.

Match winners who can turn a 50/50 game our way when it counts.

IMHO ... prefer the Geelong team type model.

:lol:one good game in the forward and suddenly he's our answer to kicking goals going forward...

He is not "the" answer but he is another option when needed. He did kick 5 goals in a structure that was not designed to assist him.

My view is not based on one game where he scored 5 goals but rather that he is a very good mark ,especially in packs and has a fair bit of physicality about him.He just needs a good run with injury.

I'm not saying he's the answer up forward but rather a reasonable option in the present situation.

Yeah sorry mate, I know you know better than that.

I was just poking fun at the way it came out.

Its the type of preposterous claim I would expect to read on here at some stage...

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
