Tell me any other coach would do any different in the same circumstances...

The thing is, that the coaching staff must be doing something right for the boys to put up the performance they did on Sunday, despite missing probably half of their best 22, and only having 1 player to rotate for most of the match.

You couldn't honestly tell me that Bailey and co. are not asking for 100% commitment from the players, and are training them accordingly. Cause its not just what happens on the field, but what happens on the training track that counts.

Who cares if he makes odd positional changes. Malcolm Blight won Adelaide a flag when he moved Darren Jarman to full forward and 'little known defender' Shane Ellen to CHF to cover for the loss of Modra..He made a number of odd switches that paid off and won them a flag. I mean would everyone have accused Blight of throwing the game if they had have lost the GF???

You'll never know if guys like Frawley and Warnock can be effective up-front if they're not tried there in a match situation. I think it's a perfectly legitimate coaching move, and the naysayers should just get over it. Its the perfect time to 'experiment', but that is something altogether different from deliberately 'throwing' a game. That would imply that the players are not trying, which as any observer of the game could say, would be an utterly false accusation.

I don't think Bailey was necessarily 'wanting' us to win, but there's no way you could accuse 'him' of causing us to lose, if that makes sense... ;)

Welcome. Good post. Yes, it does make sense your last sentence. Great example regarding Shane Ellen. The past is littered of examples of throwing up match-ups to counteract the opposition. ;)

Can anyone remember if Carlton were vilified last year like we are being at the moment. I don't remember Carlton being put under the intense scrutiny after they tanked last year. Stuff it anyway, we know where we're going and I can't wait for next year to start. I'm so excited (feel a song coming on)...

I just think people are overreacting a bit. Like most people, i'm not sure that winning was 'the' priority for Bailey and co., but really, there's no way of actually measuring whether the team is deliberately losing or not. I mean, we were in front when the siren went  . You can point to the number of bench rotations, odd positional moves, etc., but I don't see how these equate to 'cheating', which a number of hysterics are suggesting. Going on what the players have shown, its a joke of an argument because they tried their guts out. Its a slur on the club for mine. I feel really bad for the players in particular, for all this negative press.

But I mean, there's no rules defining a minimum base for interchanges, there's no rules, like in netball, that prevent defenders from entering the attacking zone..Why shouldn't Dean be allowed to do these things, particularly when the season's already been shot to pieces. Experiment  !! Its not 'cheating', what Bailey and co. are doing - its simply a subtle way of manipulating circumstances to bring about a desireable 'long term' outcome..... Developing players in multiple positions, giving youth game time, etc..Every other club would be doing exactly the same things we are doing in similar circumstances.

The real crime for mine is just how the Gold Coast franchise stand to acquire an equivalent of 20+ 1st round draft picks in the next two years..Unprecedented draft concessions (gifts) to a new club just so that they can win flags!!! That's the most galling issue currently in the AFL as i see it...

Saints are undefeated and going to finish top of the ladder.. nothing to report there

Stkilda and Geelong are the only teams that can win the Premiership.. nothing to report there

Top 8 is almost set.. little to report there

There is very little else going on atm they need to fill space and sell papers. Lovett-Murray will take the attention away from us now. So a big thank-you to him.

Yep. We have become news simply because 'scandals' will sell more papers and attract more listeners, etc. than 'truth', or something even remotely approaching 'sober analysis'

What are the odds that Mark Robinson will not be the one writing about this story!

I find it interesting in this talk of tanking which clearly is the flavour of the moment, that we have not discussed what Caroline Wilson said on footy classified this week about Hawthorn. She said they should declare their finals chances over and prepare for next year by resting players and having operations now and trying out new players. They should not go all out to win.

Am I missing something. Isn't she advocating tanking? Or is it only tanking when it is done by a side that is at the bottom of the ladder which has won 11 games in 3 years and needs help which is clearly provided for in the rules of the competition?

I would respectfully suggest that the media may be seen as more honest if they attacked the inequity of the draw which is cheating of the highest level or are they too scared of the AFL to deal honestly with that topic.

PS. Mick and Eddie can also tell us how disadvantaged the Pies are playing 18 games each year in Victoria and not having to go and lose every year at Skilled stadium. Give me a break !!!!!!!!!!

good pick up there :) Its all very well for some and not others..It only goes to the argument that this is far from a truly equal competition and Im not talking revenues and resources but how the various teams are situated in the pecking order .

I think its only 'real' tanking when a PP is at stake apparently..or if you arent connected !!

Its not apples and apples...never has been , Only now were trying to get our own barrel and stuff the rest its not kosher. Seems we dont know our place as underlings.

someone hinted at this but I think its very essential to teh whole perspective of this dillemma. GC !! If it wasnt for teh concessions of the looming GC team as well as W Sydney then the importance of this years draft mightnt be so intense and focussed. We havent done this the AFL has... again were in the firing line for some one elses f-up !!

The more I think about the whole tanking thing, all the more I become comfortable with it and the less I could care what the media or anyone else has to say about it.

If we win they'll call us idiots. If we lose, we're tanking.

We're not breaking the rules. We're using them.

And as for Andy Maher. If I were Jared Rivers, I'd be asking Maher to say it to his face. I don't reckon he would.

Well said, Redleg. I strongly agree.

Absolutely spot on Einstein!

Either way, we are screwed, so we may as well take the picks!

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
