Richmond and North Melbourne both have 4.5 wins. If they finnish on 4.5 wins do they get a PP after the first round or is the cut off 16 points? Are they still in contention for PP?

We play both these teams so the answer is very important.

No.

The line is 16.5 points.

Richmond and North both now have 18 points, so they are out of the running...

Which is GREAT. It bumps our 2nd round pick up by 2 places, increasing the chance of getting someone who has slipped through the cracks (... Butcher...)

And it must be over two years.

No, you're thinking a priority pick before the first round.

Here are the possible scenarios:

1. Melbourne finishes the season with 16 premiership points or less. West Coast finishes with 16 premiership points or less.

Melbourne gets pick 1. West Coast gets pick 2. Pick 3 onwards is determined by ladder position, with 16th getting pick 3, 15th getting 4 and so on.

This is assuming Melbourne finishes below West Coast. If West Coast finishes below Melbourne then West Coast gets pick 1.

2. Melbourne finishes with 16 premiership points or less. West Coast finishes with more than 16 premiership points.

Melbourne gets pick 1. Pick 2 onwards is determined by ladder position.

3. Melbourne finishes with more than 16. West Coast finishes with 16 or less.

West Coast gets pick 1. Pick 2 onwards determined by ladder position.

4. Melbourne finishes with more than 16. West Coast finishes with more than 16.

Pick 1 goes to the team that finishes on the bottom. Pick 2 goes to 15th, etc.

Currently, Melbourne has 12 premiership points, West Coast has 16 premiership points.

Note that Fremantle can earn a PP at the end of the first round/beginning of the second round if they finish the year with 16 premiership points or less. If this happens, every team's second round pick (and subsequent picks) will be bumped back by 1 (i.e. from 18 to 19).

Richmond and North Melbourne are both on 18 premiership points. This means they no longer qualify for the PP at the end of the first round/start of the second round.

Wrong!

If melb finish with 4 wins or less and west coast finish with 4 wins or less then melb get picks 1 + 3 + 17 and west coast get picks 2 + 4 + 18

If melb win 4 or less and west coast win 5 or more then we get 1 and 2 and 17 and they get the pick relating to ladder position

morale of the story = we do not under any circumstances win 5 or more games

I don't know what he got wrong (nothing that I can see), but you have our second round pick wrong. 1. Melb, 2.WCE, 3.Melb, 4.WCE.....19.Melb, 20.WCE....

that is true about the second round pick, i dont know if he got it wrong or whether i read it wrong

So once again, the best possible result for us is to not win another game. That knocks Freo out of the priority picks as well, maximizing our chances of picking up quality talent.

Freo won't get a PP before the draft, but after the first round.

To me, 1 and 3 is essentially 1 and 2 in this draft. There is one standout and about 4 or 5 even players.

In that example above, Freo didn't come into the equation. If they're the one team we beat, surely they could go the rest of the year winning nothing?

The line is 16.5 points

I have a question: how exactly can a team end up with 16.5 premiership points?

Why have the .5 in there when it's simply not possible? Why can't they just say 16 points or 4 wins or less?

Yes, but that PP at the end of the first round still has an impact on our opportunities. Better to have them win one more and be right out of the picture.

If Freo finish without another win, they get a PP at the end of the first round. I'd prefer that their second pick came after our second round pick. Just to be sure they don't pinch a good prospect from us.

They can't, unless the AFL were to penalise a team on 20 pts, 3.5pts for an indiscretion.

I remember the AFL stating at the time, it was to minimise confusion.

it so you can win 4 games and still qualify, and to account for a draw

ALL THIS FART ARSE FUSSING OVER A SIMPLE ISSUE..

TALK ABOUT DRAMA QUEENS....

16 POINTS IS THE CUT OFF-- ANYMORE AND THE PP IS LOST FOR ANY TEAM !!!

He meant 16.5, it wasn't an error.

fuschia, i'm not sure whether you're trying to make me laugh, but you've succeeded in doing so...

It does somewhat make sense because then there's no issue of whether the 'line' (say at 16 or 18) is in our out of PP range.

It wasn't an error at all. It is 16.5 points.

Much like the line in betting. Having the decimal removes any confusion because it is between whole numbers and the result can only be in whole numbers.

Therefore anything over 16 points, but not including 16 points.

Otherwise it'd be:

"so to get a priority pick do we have to have LESS than 16 points, or can we have 16 points but NO MORE than 16, or is it that can have 16 but we just can't have 20 cos that's 5 wins..?"

I fail to see why so many ppl are confused.

I though MFC supporters were supposed to be fairly well educated on the whole... I mean, we're not Collingwood for fu%&'s sake.
