A NEW YEAR, A NEW ERA AND A WISH FOR JIM by The Oracle

The financial world this week celebrates the end of a year which many are happy to see done and dusted. It was a difficult period that saw world financial markets in meltdown, businesses going broke and people losing their jobs. Given all the circumstances, the new year brings some hope of better times and I only wish we could say the same about the football year where the Demons are concerned.

The Melbourne Football Club has so far this season produced the same misery for its fans that the global financial crisis has dished up to the world of business and finance. Now, with news of the illness of President and club hero Jimmy Stynes, the Demons could not be at a lower ebb.

All at Demonland wish Jim a speedy recovery and return to full and good health. Throughout his football career he displayed extraordinary spirit and resilience and we have no doubt that he will conquer his illness and return to complete the magnificent work he is doing in building his family, in working with troubled youth through the Reach Foundation and in rejuvenating the Melbourne Football Club.

Over the past twelve months Jim and his board have chalked up some outstanding achievements in reducing debt, establishing and cementing relationships and setting the scene for the club's future both on and off the ground.

Of course, we knew that the on field revival was always going to be a tough struggle and this has proven to be the case. One win from 13 matches, a few promising early signs and then the devastation of the past month or so have sapped the spirit of many. Last Saturday night in Brisbane produced one of the most humiliating performances in the club's history. It wasn't simply that the Demons remained anchored on two goals from midway through the opening term until early in the last but also the way they went about it barely emitting a pulse. And please don't give me any excuses - in a national competition what was presented to the football world was unacceptable.

The ultimate insult was the opposition coach's choice of words after the game when describing his team's 55- point win: "It's not being disrespectful to the opposition in any way but I thought it was one of our poorer performaces this year."

Those words should be enough to sting anyone at the club with an ounce of pride in themselves into action. In fact, any player who can't respond positively to that, shouldn't be in the game.

Which leads to what I can only hope will be a new beginning for the club because, it's really facing what is, in effect, a brand new year with nine remaining rounds that are certainly not, on the face of it, as daunting as the fixture to date.

Included in the run home are three games at the MCG gainst interstate clubs West. Coast, Port Adelaide and Fremantle, a short flight to Canberra to take on the Sydney Swans and return encounters against Richmond and North Melbourne. None of those teams are setting the world on fire and they aren't expected to see finals action this year.

There's also a Round 21 assignment against Carlton which lost on Friday night to the Bombers by 69 points.

On that reckoning, seven of the remaining nine games are against teams whose current form is of considerably poorer standard to what Melbourne has become accustomed in recent matches so the opportunity is definitely available for the club to start afresh from this week.

The Demons can take a new attitude with them bouyed by the life struggle of their spiritual leader. The business people, bankers and accountants who suffered so much over 2008/9 are on the brink of a brand new year. So is the whole Melbourne family. Together, we shall overcome.

Let's face it. The only reason why the Demons were still in the game in its final stages was because of the Eagles' atrocious kicking for goal. They tried hard and plugged away all afternoon but were always going to struggle to win after they lost key defenders Jared Rivers and James Frawley during the game through injury. Brad Miller kicked a few and Brock McLean and Brent Moloney worked hard in the midfield but in the end it was all to no avail and West Coast finished 8 points in front despite kicking one goal less than the visitors.

The West Coast Eagles pulled off one of the year's big upset victories in atrocious conditions at Subiaco last week when they overran the reigning premier Hawthorn after an exciting final quarter that showcased the exciting talents of newcomer Nick Naitanui. The tall young ruckman was the talk of the town with his three-goal final quarter which reportedly caused a sell out if Eagle # 9 jumpers in Perth sports stores.

The result and the circumstances were in complete contrast to the events that were taking place across the continent in Brisbane where Demon youngster Jack Watts failed to impress and the team was hammered by the Lions.

The performances also gave the lie to the suggestion that this Saturday's match up at the MCG should be billed as the "battle of the tankers" in a round that otherwise contains some spectacular contests.

This week which is more than three months into the season is delivering to the football public a match up between two undefeated teams St.Kilda and Geelong, a clash between traditional rivals and in form opponents Collingwood and Essendon, a desperate battle between the Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn and to counterbalance those contests, the game that sees the only two teams with a chance to gain a first round priority draft pick this year slug it out with one another.

Fascinating!

But John Worsfold's team turned the supposed tankfest or Tom Scully Trophy game on it's head by defying the sceptics and beating the Hawks last week. A win on Saturday means no priority pick at all this year for the Eagles, a prospect that looked unlikely just a few weeks ago.

Now, if the heavens line up properly for them and the other results fall the right way, they could find themselves just one game out of the top 8! The Eagles are certainly not tanking.

And neither are the Demons. They've had a tough run over the past month or so and their young players are showing signs of fatigue. Some of their older brigade who have come back from injury interruptions are also looking tired. At this stage of the journey they don't have the experience and aren't good enough to beat teams contesting the finals.

A return to home soil and to the club's real jumper, the desire to individually and collectively atone for recent poor performances and the emotion of their leader's plight will all be factors in this week's game. Added to that is the fact that West Coast struggles to win games away from home having list their last 17 matches outside WA.

All of these things sway me towards the view that Melbourne will win this week's game by 8 points and thereby make a promising new start to a brand new year. I hope each and every one of our record number in excess of 31,000 members comes to the MCG to witness the event and to support Jimmy and his team.

Jim Stynes showed not only just what he means to the Melbourne Football Club but also how to carry ones self in adversity. Jim was always high in my esteem but after the announcement by him at the MCG and the way he handled himself he is even now more so

To Jim his Wife & Family I know you will fight this with all you have and I know the Melbourne Football Club will support you.

But as far as the Players are concerned if they really want to show Jim how they feel, the best way they could do that is to show it on the Field

If the players are made up of half of What Jimmy is they will win this one. Nows the time for them to show they are the Melbourne Football Club and prove the Faith that Jim has had in the club is warranted and show Jim just how much they do care

Melbourne by 35 points

And all those Supporters "who can" please be there do so to show their support for Jim and the Melbourne Football club

I personally cant but Im sending my sons to show their support

Jim our thoughts and prayers are with you

Go Jim

Go Dees

The Demons have made four changes ahead of the side’s Round 14 clash with the West Coast Eagles.

Coming into the team are captain James McDonald, Matthew Bate, Mark Jamar and Paul Wheatley.

McDonald returns to the fold after recovering from a knee injury that forced him to miss the last two weeks. Ruckman Mark Jamar also returns from injury, after overcoming a slight quad strain.

Paul Wheatley will play his first game for Melbourne this season, after impressing with a number of strong performances with Casey in the VFL. Wheatley’s first half of the season was hampered severely by calf and quad injuries. Forward Matthew Bate also returns after missing last week with the flu.

Ruckman Paul Johnson, Matthew Whelan and Brad Miller have all been omitted.

Jack Watts will also miss his first game since making his debut, due to illness. During the week, Watts missed two days of training after suffering from migraines and a bout of gastro.

The emergencies for the match are Brad Miller, Paul Johnson and Daniel Bell.

Miller getting dropped 2 times in 4 weeks.

Is this the end?

And not that PJ deserves a game, but the Dees sure have faith in their 1 ruckman plan. Perhaps PJ is on emerg list as insurance, if Cox plays.

EDIT - Cox not included.

Not great about Watts, although I don't entirely believe the "illness" thing.

This would have been a perfect week for him to really get comfortable, given we are playing a lesser opponent. He may have even experienced his first win!

Paul Wheatley getting a game after his average display for Casey on the weekend, is bizarre. The farewell tour starting early?

And never thought I would say this, but thank goodness Jamar is back!!!

Miller getting dropped 2 times in 4 weeks.

Is this the end?

or just a wake up !! get well Jack ...say in about 5 weeks ;)

Would've liked to have seen Juice and Dunn in. Not surprised Miller was dropped to be honest...

The eagles have dropped Kerr because of "general soreness" lol

List management working at its best hahah

Bit disappointing about Watts missing out this week like some of said would have been good to see him line up against a lesser opponent and be in the side for his first win.

But if he is indeed sick then i understand.

Like Jamar in, and Wheatley deserves to show if he has something to offer this team going forward.

Would of rather some more youth exposed with Strauss no matter how bad he has done at Casey.

Miller seems to be really dropping off the radar.

Demons will win this one me thinks!

GO DEES

If Kerr not playing, can understand lack of taggers. So Barty and Dunny can avoid my rant here.

Jamar is a good in, should never have been out. Hurt his quad trying to impress the coach at training by all reports, so hopefully shows something on Saturday.

McDonald will be underdone, Valenti a better option.

Watts and Miller out of the forward line, leaving the slow-as Bate? Jurrah had better be on his game, only chance we have of winning this thing.

No Maric?

Argh, will be a difficult game to watch.

Clearly West Coast are not intent on winning another match for the rest of the year.

Kerr rested and no Cox.

Make no mistake about this, they can still grab those picks 1 & 2 off us, even though they are capable of winning at least one more.

I think the most significant out is whelan...Is this the end?

Moreover, is it the end for miller and PJ?

Why the fu** isn't struass playing?

I was at the kids clinic on Tuesday, and Watts was about the only player not there, as they had training after it.

As it is school holidays, i presume he must have been sick or he would have been there.

Strauss isnt playing as he isnt imposing himself on games at Casey yet, he's a bit-part half back flanker at the present down there. Just because someone was drafted high does not mean they need to be fast-tracked into the senior side.

Could be close to the end for Wheels. Miller dropped again is worrying for him.

Why oh why was Wheatley selected, surely not on the basis of his game last week?

shocking ins.

Good to see Bailey and co bowed to the media pressure re Watts. Quite pathetic.

On paper, I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

west coast drop Kerr and everyone still thinks they are tanking? are you guys serious? did you not watch last week.. why would they tank when they have winnable games coming up, there is no way they will go the rest of the season without a win.. they do play tigers at subi, freo, etc..

i still think west coast will beat us with that lineup

having said that.. very happy to see PJ finally dropped and the Russian back, that really sucks Watts is sick.. as others have said, it would have been great to see him against a weaker team to what we have been playing!

interesting to see Jurrah on the wing too!

Still no game for Valenti! unbelievable! Mclean is clearly not fit/carrying an injury of some type. If he aggravates his injury this week and cant do preseason im going to be really [censored] off.

watching the other week he is not one to sit back and wait for the game to come to him, this lad likes to find the footy and if its all up the other end he goes a wandering ( and good luck to him too) I think this guy really has so many strings to his bow hes going to be every ( other ) coaches nigghtnmare... what a bugger huh ?? lol

Wheatley is a great in! To think otherwise is a joke

The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
