Lyon does not want to coach. He chose to go down the media path and there is nothing to suggest that he won't continue that.

If we find ourselves in a similar position next year and the decision is made to move Bailey on I hope it is Todd Viney that takes over.

If we keep dishing up the garbage we have been over the last month against some of the lesser lights of the comp, i think we are going to hear names like Lyon and Viney get mentioned quite a bit.

Personally, i would definitely be having a look at Todd Viney.

The only problem is, how will the powers that be judge Bailey this year after he will possibly deliver us the first 2 draft picks in the last draft before expansion takes over?

before we all start potting Garry, he didnt write the article, had nothing to do with it and has never said he wants to coach melbourne. So back off.

Garry has repeatedly said he doesn't want to coach. I think a better option would be to try to get him on the board. I think he'd be better suited to that.

Bailey will coach next year. He won't be there in 2011 unless there's significant improvement next year.

Well that is true he doesn't want to coach - and he has gone down the media path and I guess good on him

Isn't he only on a two year contract at the moment? That would mean we offer him a one year deal, with certain requirements to be met, for him to retain the job beyond 2010. I'm not sure that's the wisest move to be honest.

Agree on both points.

Lyon on the board seems more plausible, considering the connection he has with Jimmy, and the fact that he would be able to keep his role in the media.

IMO Bailey's got the job next year, unless we lose all remaining games of '09 by an average margin of 50+ points with a W/L ratio of 1-21, and a worse percentage than last year. There's no way DB could survive a result like that, could he?

Unfortunately, it wouldn't be much surprise to the majority of the football-following community if we only won 1 more or didn't win another game at all, after recent showings. 4 weeks ago i would have laughed, now, i'm not so sure to be honest.

A result anything less than last year would be a massive failure, especially considering the draw we have, and the apparent improvement we'd shown earlier in the year. We play at least 5 winnable games against lowly opposition in the run home, as noted in another thread. I sincerely hope for the club and DB's sake that he scrapes in for at least another 2 or 3 wins.

Don't even get me started about what would happen if we won 5...

Happy to read this. Bailey needs to feel some pressure. Rebuilding or not our win loss ratio is completely unacceptable. The reason we are so mediocre is because most of us accept this because of a carrot waved in our faces in the form of draft picks. Let's not beat around the bush, the last 3 years are fitzroy like.

You've hit the nail right on the head..we are going backward..bar the Richmond game, we have barely challenged this year

Oh Gerard you really are a total hack. Get a story, we've all heard this one before. I know Gerard how about the one about Sheedy coaching Richmond. Roll that out. Or wait maybe Malthouse. Better still get off your ass and do what journalists are supposed to do, some research and write an original piece. Your credibility sinks further into the mire.

Gerard Healy loves the romantic stories. From memory he also mooted that Melbourne and Richmond should merge to become the Melbourne Tigers sometime ago. To follow the basketball theme - 'Melbourne Tigers'.

It's all a little too late for G.Lyon now.

How bout 34 ?

I'm not anti Bailey - yet, but it's not unfair to scrutinise his performance. Why would he be immune from the glare. I'm not sure that anyone could have done better than Bailey over the last 18 months. Then again, I'm not sure anyone could have done worse either.

Yep. Too early right now to make a call either way on his future.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
