Na.. it was stupid, a brain-fade.. not selfish because there wasn't anyone in a better position to kick the goal, or pass it to. He was in the best position to goal and Stupidly played on and missed.. not selfish, unneccessary.

BTW- wouldn't comment on it if i hadn't seen it, geezus.

 - not selfish , unnecessary.

He took it upon himself to try and make it spectacular. Selfish & Stupid.

See Russell Robertson thread if still in doubt. 'geezus'

Why can't Martin learn his trade as a ruckman resting forward pocket, this gives us a chance to play another running type player off the bench.

Having a ruckman resting FP takes a running type player off your starting 18. So its a neutral impact.

I don't think Robbo lairises too much- i think of the whole goalsquare thing from yest, as more of a brain fade.. lets just pop it thru, get back into the centre a.s.a.p, then get it back down to me again quick, sort of thing..

the lairising he does do..well thats just Robbo! Been like that for years, don't think it will change now!! He's always flying round like a 20 y.o trying to take a hanger an all that.. that's his strength and IMHO the reason he's been so good for so long.. When all else fails, you can pop it to the top of the pack and chances are still good, an out-numbered Robbo will fly to the top and pull it in- what an asset to have and rare in this day an age.. Also, Definately NOT selfish our Robbo!

For spectators, Robbo is a treat. He focusses on the mark of the day and the goal of the day antics. You love it. And you now he sometimes he actually gets it....once in a while. However, too often his indulgence in these antics are done at significant cost to the team. Too often he flies for marks he clearly cant get and in doing puts himself in a position where he has little or no second effort if the ball spills to a contested situation. In addition, he is prone to focus on the goal of the day the mecurial boundaryline or impossible position goal. And once in a while he gets one and in over 200 games he has had 3 or 4 days out. But FFS the number of times over the course of career he has gone for personal glory without looking for the better team option is absolutely galling.

And for all that time Robbo has never quite worked the accountability and the running required in modern football as a forward and too often if does not take the heroic speccie he is out of the contest.

He does have some strings to his bow which he could provide some benefit to the team. However he cruels alot of that benefit with selfish episodes like that one.

Robbo does lairise and is selfish and always has been. And you are right it is too late to change the player. Its his last year on his contract and its a repeat of selfish acts like that which will see him out of contract very quickly.

Its no wonder the other players dont have him in the leadership group and for good reasons.

Of course I saw it you twit. He took the mark. Why handball backwards? You'd make a great coach wouldn't you!!

Selfish because he didn't go back and kick the goal. Selfish because he thinks of himself and wants everything to look spectacular.

He is payed to kick goals, not show boat.

What other jerk tries that on his back? Probably just Fevola. That speaks volumes.

Mate you are way off on this one. Stop digging.

Why is he a 'jerk' all of a sudden - doesn't your tiny brain allow you to come up with a better phrase thats more fitting to the conversation -after all, your prob one who wets himself every time he bags his 4th, after launching to the top of a pack, to bring down a speccy right? Then when its not quite perfect.. he's a jerk?

I think your post speaks volumes

If trying to kick a goal whilst laying on your back is not lairising I dont know what is. The selfishness is not related to that act but the numerous acts where he put his own self importance ahead of the team. Examples: Having a shot from 55m out when he saw Sylvia 35 metres in the clear from anyone inside the forward 50. Doing the hard work in close in the third qtr but then rather than handing it off to two players around trying to break two tackles and swing a snap through the goals. Trying to mark running with the flight of the ball at the city end when he should have shepherded the ball through (I will accept he may not have known it was going through). And any of the numerous times he chose to hang inside 50 metres behind the play rather than lay defensive pressure.

I agree he wont change and that is why the sooner he is gone the better before he injects such behaviour into the younger players.

Ok then. How about 'Show Pony'. Apologies if you took offence to 'jerk'. I'm quite certain you think Fevola is one anyway.

Is that more now fitting to the conversation of being 'selfish' & 'stupid'?

He was one yard out from goal directly in front who the f**k is he going to pass to or kick to in a better position????:wacko:

You are right. It was unnecessary, he was showing off and it cost the team big time and cheats his teammates who worked hard to get the ball down there. Damn selfish. Even worse from an apparent senior player.

If a player tries to kick a goal from 1 metre out lying on his back with opponents around him after taking a mark and fails you dont need to see it. BTW, I assume you have seen it. Its amazing how someone who didnt can have a far better grasp of the bleedin obvious than someone who claims to have seen it.

BTW, I have seen it live and on replay and its just another selfish act from a player who sacrifices the basic team things to be the show off.

In: Bartram / Dunn, MacNamara

Out: Petterd, Rivers

Need a tagger, Barty was clearly fit so must have been off-field issues for him to have a rest (and lets face it, he deserves it), give Tom Mac a run, as Rivers was pitiful......

Any maybe Jetta for Robbo, not sure on that one, but figured might get some conversation juices flowing....

Sometimes when we strive to protect a loved one, we keep on ploughing through relentlessly. Often IMO, when the loved one's gone, the emptiness left is overwhelming, no???

If you want my honest opinion Tingles, I have no time for those who will not abide by team rules, or those who put themselves before the team for personal gain, whether it's for a goal, or even trying for goal of the year. The team always comes first in my book. Comprende'?

Agree, the team should come first.

We're on the same page. There is no room in the team for this kind. Bailey would want to stamp this on the head straight away.

Nice to see you can chat without having to refer to players as 'jerks'

He doesn't indulge in these antics, and he flies for marks he cant get for the same reason- because he's the only forward we've got and its been that way for years. Thats what you have to do when you're NOT a KPP, playing a KPP role. When your team has been as badly skilled and down on manpower as we have been for years now, 99% of the time you have most of your forwards (and mids) run up the ground -as is our game plan currently- to try to limit the amount of scoring done against you by flooding the area. This generally leaves Robbo, or the unfortunate forward, alone back there with nearly always- under these circumstances- with more than one opponent. this would also explain the mecurial boundary-line or 'impossible goal', who else is there to kick it to half the time, when the rest of your team is just making there way down from the backline and you've just received a crappy pass that took you out to the flanks or boundary line?? Gotta do something right?

Not only do i think Robbo is unselfish, i bet he's around for another couple of years- speaking of contracts..

Poor ol' Neita did nothing for the last couple odd years he was in the forward line and the only other choise is Miller, who unfortunatly can't hold a candle to Robbo.

Seriously try to imagine what it would be like being a Dees forward over the last 2 and a bit years. Makes me shudder. But Robbo has constantly been our best and kicked the most goals and straightens us up better than anyone. Out of everyone in the team, for me, Robbo just keeps on keeping on, even against the impossible-ish! Definately not selfish even if sometimes it appears that way.

BTW- not in the leadership group cause of the injury, im guessing.. miller being in it instead as a forward-line representative??

Sorry. He does indulge and often to the detriment of the team. BRFE's examples are from one game I can give you others.

His "mercurial" snaps from the boundary line are done while ignore a team mate on their centred in front of goal. Too often Robbo goes for glory.

You are the ulitimate apologist for a player who has sucked you in over the years. None of your explanations exonerates Robbo's decisions. It makes them worse. It only highlights the imperative of the team things first.

Not only do i think Robbo is unselfish, i bet he's around for another couple of years- speaking of contracts..

I am not sure Robbo has done that much over the last couple of year either. Cashed in a couple of games against a lowly Blues and was playing on a 1st year player against the Pies on QBW in 2007. Otherwise he has struggled. The highlighted sentence sums up your problem. Now go deal with it. B)

IF THE BEST you can do is pick out a few examples over the many years of service then your arguement is very weak. I could do that for every other player in the league mate.

'Ultimate apologist?' Now your using Buzzwords to try to sound knowledgable, not a good sign.

Robbo holding together the forward line (NOT BEING A KPP) and doing it well - still kicking his couple goals a match with basically no support or decent ball coming in, is what sucked me in, over the years.

Sorry I'll correct that sentence for ya, "Definately not selfish even if sometimes it appears that way... TO SOME"...

Out - Petterd, Miller and Whelan.

In - Jamar, Dunn and Bartram.

I thought that our balance of players being accountable and having a defensive side of their game was shown up without Barts and Dunn. Our tackling and pressure were also down, both players have their critics, but there is no doubt they offer us these traits.

Whelan would be stiff to miss, but you can't have Grimes, Bennell and Bartram all fighting for similar positions on the ground,so unless we are going to push one more into the middle, youth wins out.

Miller gets dropped for being a spud, and Martin gets a chance to play out of the square with Bate playing more of a hit up role.

do you know him, have you ever met him ?

he is melbourne through and through he is a showman and yes im sure if he had his time again he would do it differently but just because he made a mistake doesnt mean we drop him you clown.

No, it was both stupid and selfish.

We all know why it was stupid.

It was selfish because he was thinking about how cool he would look if he kicked the ball whilst lying on his back. He was thinking about how great his speccie was and how he wanted to continue in the same vein. He was thinking about how he would look once he'd kicked it. He wasn't thinking about how much the team needed the goal.

And if you're going to reply to this, do you think you could refrain from calling me names? It shows you have little ability to maintain an argument.

You dont get it. You dont have to confirm it.

Just because Robbo has been better than the paucity of options we have had in recent year (and Robbo has not been that great since early 2006) does not justify him being a show pony and not doing the best thing by the team. Too often Robbo confuses whats best for him with what's best for team. Too often its been to the detriment of the team. After 13 seasons he does not have the mind or maturity to work that out. It seems he is not alone.

How did the ball get into the forward line to give him a set shot at goal?

Which players took the bumps and the hits, did the hard running, made the contests for the ball to go inside 50?

In honour of the hard work of other players in the team who are seeking to claw there way back into the game, what did Robbo do?

He thought he would be a hero. He thought he would do something he thought was spectacular. He was thinking about Robbo.

Did Robbo think about rewarding the hard work of his teammates and making sure he kicked a valuable goal? No he was thinking of Robbo.

How do you think his teammates felt when Robbo had blown an opportunity to kick a goal from 1 metre out because he was prepared to sacrifice the teams aims and goals...for Robbo?

That's why its selfish and all the things you said it was. Its terrible example of a trait of Robbos throughout his significant career since starting as a rookie. You understand as little as Robbo does. Figures.

IN: Bell, Jamar,

Out: Jones, Petterd

These are my realistic changes. Would love to drop Robbo but it wont happen. Jamar to come in and share ruck duties meaning Martin to play permanent forward. Bell has been in the bests playing as an inside mid 2 weeks in a row and deserves the chance to see if his form translates to AFL level. Jones is falling into old habits the last couple of weeks and not taking the first option and turning it over too often. Petterd needs to go back to Casey and try and become a midfielder as he does not work forward and there are too many options ahead of him down back.

Nearly agree whole heartedly but I don't think Jones will be dropped in a hurry, for the same reason Junior will not be dropped.

Petterd on the other hand needs to go back to Sandy and be chucked on the ball and see if he can work his way back up from there. He has courage in spades and that has kept him in the side but as you say his forward role will work one in 8 or 10 games. Let's see if he works in the midfield even if it takes a bit of time.

So for me the outs are:

Petterd and Whelan (if and only if injured).

I'm not excited about Dunn or Jamar coming back in so either Bell, Bartram, Valenti or Cheney and still not all that excited.

Bell or Valenti for Petterd and Cheney for Whelan if injured.

Jamar in if Johnson is about to collapse without assistance

Out: Petterd (Whelan)

In: Bell/Jamar (Cheney)

How do you know that we were never going to win that game anyway? Had he gone back and kicked it like he should have......well we're 5 points closer....and an entire different set of circumstances presents itself.

Facts are he made one of the most stupid blunders of all time to please himself. He had no awareness that Moss was nearby. He cost the team a goal. He was dragged for the reasons stated in this thread. What else are you trying to prove?

You can forget the past too, especially the last couple of years. There is nothing to excite when you go there. Let's look to the future where we want a team that works as a team and not a team of individuals, if it's the latter you can forget about a Flag.

No, it was both stupid and selfish.

Yes, indeed some perspective is needed here in order to understand why Robbo plays the way he plays some times. The "hangars" he goes for are some times unecessary but more often than not required as he is 184cm and playing on a KP defender. Not to mention that we have no forward system what so ever and he is one of the few dangerous forwards we have who has the courage to commit. We don't have crumbers at the moment up forward and this hurts all our forwards but especially those who can actually get off the ground and go for big grabs. Our forward line is a drop in centre from one week to the next so structure and understsnding between players is not what it could be (Martin made a visit this week who will it be next week?). It is easy to be called a lair when you have to play a certain style to be effective. There are aspects of his game which should have been ironed out under Daniher but alas Daniher coached the team as a collective but not individuals. We are stuck with Robbo for all his pros and cons and Bailey will address some of these cons but it is important to understand the job he has and how he is doing his best to do it within his ability without letting one stupid act distort that. Whether he plays next year or not Robbo is still our most dangerous forward and whether we like it or not it is because of the way he plays (or has to play).

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to sta

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los
