I don't know how many were at the game, but whoever was on Davey, and it varied a bit, had a clear run on the turnover so many time I nearly popped a [censored]. He got caught ball watching sooo many times in the square when his man was running to the open wing. Did anybody else watch this game with me? Needs a good boot up the backside this weekend.

It was Cameron Stokes on him in a defense role and what was actually happening was Hawthorn ran tight tags on Morton and Davey in our defensive half. This was to stop them getting the ball as link men at the point kick in and driving the ball into the centre corridor. Our game plan is to use the centre corridor and run the ball into our forwards quickly. However because hawthorn had huge numbers of players in the corridor at all times we were forced wide. Davey did not start the game as a forward and it is not his role to impart defensive pressure I believe thats is Petterd's role. Im not sure how you expect him to put on defensive pressure with a guy up him bum all the time. I understand we turned it over but what is he meant to do be reactive enough to anticipate the turnover and then bust his bum to chance stokes down when we make a howling error.

He wasn't us his bum. He was 20 metres in the clear time and time again while davey was ball watching the square

It is everybody's role, when we don't have the ball

I thought they figured us out a bit. really clamped down on davey morton and moloney. i think davey just might not have the tank to consistently play on the ball. Looked completely stuffed at times! But still thought he chased well, but we have to realise he cant chase that quick all the time!!

Clearly the Hawthorn plan was to niggle and annoy Davey all day. McGlynn did that job in the 2nd half, always prodding and pushing him even when the ball was 100 meters away, and also if Davey got a kick/handball, a Hawks player would always come up and needlessly hit/bump him, Roughhead did it at least 3 times in the 2nd half alone. Historically, Davey has not handled a super-hard tag at all well, one has to only go back to the game against the Hawks a few years ago when Osborne niggled him all day, and Davey ended up punching him and getting weeks. While he wasnt terrible today, Daveys output was fairly well restricted by the Hawks gameplan on him...

I watched the replay of the game ucanchoose, but making a statement such as Davey has no defensive pressure without any examples makes your argument lack any real substance. I think Davey has terrific defensive pressures and runs back to provide help better than most players. Regardless of the game being our of our reach, or in your case the "cue" back in the "rack", who else would have made that chase on Muston? I couldn't name one of our players and nor could you.

You don't see these things on tv. watching the replay of the game would be useless.

I think this thread is a bit unfair to be honest. Davey still had an important impact today, he may not have been as damaging as usual, but I'm glad he played. He still put on tackles, ran to receive and set up play. Some people don't seem to realise his importance to the team. If you don't have someone running by for the handball and setting up play, the style of play we play, then it's never going to work. Despite the close attention thrust on Aaron, he still managed 17 touches (14 of them kicks) and set the play up numerous times.

IMO Davey has the best defensive pressure in the side, easily. He's the one chasing every time.

Thank you Peter that was exactly what i said they put hard tags on Morton and Davey

Yes. When the game was long gone. And the cue was well and truely in the rack.

The game was over at half time!

I was pleased with the effort the boys have put in running out games, it is much improved than last years owell we've lost attitude.

Daveys 100m chase was one example of this. Today he had an average but serviceable game with a heavy tag on him.

Agree with that. They really did their homework and the three guys u named have been far and away our best all year, yet all 3 of them had probably their least influential games for the season.

The days of a game being over at half time are over! teams that put the cue in the rack are arrogantly playing into the hands of their next opponent. Let me get this argument straight... The Demons had only a few decent contributors, our best player in 2009 was a dog and the fact that we were outscored by one point in the final three quarters was because the Hawks are so good that they rested 17 of their best!!!!

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
