Butcher?

Im not so sure about John Butcher myself. Dont get me wrong hes a great player but he was helped alot by a very strong vic country team. This is how he came to fame but most of his marks were not contested and vic country were a very good team last year so there was alot of ball going into the forward 50.

Any thoughts?

Can we please stop talking about draft picks please. Far out I know its more than likely we'll finish bottom winning 4 games or less but please let's try and draw some positives in the young players that actually play for our club

Trust me im the same i get sick of it but there's a reason. We dont have any good young players to talk about yet. Like i mean there are a few who have shown A BIT but really they havnt had alot of the ball or kicked goals and had a big impact or something to excite us with. Morton yes he aint a first year.

I agree. I want to see us win games (more than 4). And it's only round 4 we should not think about draft picks when we (technically) can still make the finals.

the answer is simple with pick 1 take scully and pick 2 the best power forward,

You dont need 2 power forwards to win flag. Look at geelong they are good enough and there forward line has one OK tall. Yes hawthorn have 2 but geelong are the best and they dont really have great big forwards. Midfield Midfield Midfield. If ya have a good midfield all a forward needs to do is mark the ball when is delievered on there chest

We can do both, talk about potential draftees, &/or our recruits, & our disappointments.

When we talk about the developement of our New recruits, we're thinking of our future. It's no different looking further ahead at the same time, to reflect on the possibilities.

I assure you that the clubs are out there looking at the TAC U-18s, Matt Rendell was watching the D/nong Stingrays game last week, & I'm sure there were others there representing different clubs.

We Have to release some players at the end of each season. It's a part of the game. It's Not being disloyal to our players.

so when your only forward is kicking four goals seven points for the night, or is getting doubled teamed, what then.

Clearly you didnt read it. If you have a good enough midfield the ball moves quick enough. You cant double team a leading forward on the lead. If you put a man in space thats mean the other team had a man free, midfield is good enough to kick it to him. ITS WHAT GEELONG DOES AND IT SEEMS TO WORK.

I'm interested in this thread. This year is about the future and if you are interested in our development then

you can appreciate any thread that invites information about the possible draft picks this year as we are certainly not aiming for the 8.

This thread I was hoping might draw some of the expert opinion here on Butcher who we have all heard so much about but only seen on the utube

which also needs some context.

the Hawks have two power forwards in Rough and Buddy , (Watts/ this years no.1 pick), a sharp shooting mid size in Williams(Maric), and a young speedy crumber with freakish ability in Rioli (Aussie) add Jurah and youve got your self a forward line to go with our emerging backline. that would seem to work.

we will most likely have pick two as well to use on a gun midfielder. remembering Blease and Strauss are yet to pull on a jumper. Morton should be studying tapes of Adam Goodes.

Its stupid to speculate (assuming we have picks 1&2) that our first 2 picks should be the best midfielder and the best power forward available.

What if the best 'power forward' in the draft is a clone of Cleve Hughes??

What if the best midfielder available is another Brodie Holland? .. and what if a Dean Cox is available..?

BEST AVAILABLE.

REGARDLESS OF POSITION.

based on that the Bulldogs will play off against the Cats, the Saints and Hawks can pack up shop now

Agree with that...best available.

We will know doubt get a late starter or two like Watts to throw into the mix.

Sounds like there will be a midfielder or two of real class if Scully and Lucas are the benchmarks already. Scully has had two good games looking at the stats so far and was up there already last year as an underage 16 year old. He does look the goods.

Melbourne would be happy with the best midfielder (or two) in the draft. I really do think we need to create at least one gun midfielder, then our other midfield stocks will star to rise. I also agree we don't need to obsess about a key forward if they are not that great. Thats the stance we took this year to recruit skillful runners after Watts. Why go tall for the sake of it?

Who knows a gun ruckman may demand selection as well. I wouldn't mind a Vickery type going forward. Richmond have done very well there.

like it or not, the TAC champs will be extremely important to our future given our best draft picks may actually be this year.

Geelong were good enough in 2007. They were not last year. The problem with your argument is that in the heat of finals the ball is less likely to be delivered with precision. You may not need 2 good power forwards but it is alot easier to win a flag if you have them. Geelong with Ottens and Hawkins playing well up forward is a much stronger propositon than Geelong with Ottens or Hawkins and Lonergan up forward.

Agree 100%

From what I have seen Scully is miles ahead of the pack, including Butcher.

I see no reason why we must have 2 big bodied key forwards, thats a fairly outdated AFL model. Regardless, our midfield is our biggest weakness by a country mile anyway & should be our No 1 priority if we want to become a premiership team.

Hmmmm..nice to have both. Remember Watts plays a more Hird like role of lead up forward and can play up the ground when his opponent is beating him like Hurley last year. he will play midfield from time to time which will be an enormous asset. We will need a big bloke down there as a permanent forward.

our midfield is not our biggest weakness, our forward line is. Don't overestimate blokes like Miller. We do require a gun in the midfield but we have some talent to come through...Grimes, Morton, Blease, Buckley to add some class and pace. Jones is playing quite well at present as well.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
