Liam Jurrah at training

I was in Cranbourne this morning and had a brief window of opportunity to drop into training and to have a quick look around the facility at Casey Fields.

I wasn't there long enough to do any report on training but Liam Jurrah was there and is quite unmistakable. He's tall, pencil thin, moves like a cat and looks an interesting prospect. Like Austin Wonaeamirri last year, he goes into the pre season without the November/December base of the others but that didn't stop Aussie from making a bit of an impact when he got his opportunity. Aussie incidentally looks very fit as does The Flash. Brock McLean took part in full training in the short time I was there.

Exciting times ahead for the Dees and big improvements expected now that they are doing all of their pre season at the one facility.

At training today I couldn't help but notice Jurrah on the outer, including on the outer with our indiginous boys. I know he's a new arrival but being from such a remote area we must welcome himwith open arms. I did overhear a discussion between two Melbourne staff who had just contacted the Filth Football Club. From what I heard they were trying to find contacts that he had in Melbourne when he played for the Filth's reserves team last season. A smart move IMO as he appeared to enjoy his time with the filth. We need to put those extra yards in now to get the most out of Jurrah in the future. I believe that he has the necessary football attribute and his success will be based on whether we help get his mental side right.

Today, I certainly liked what I saw from a kid who only landed in Melbourne 3 days ago.

To anyone thinking about heading down to Casey, well worth the trip.

From what I heard they were trying to find contacts that he had in Melbourne when he played for the Filth's reserves team last season.

I believe this has already been done and the club is working very hard to ensure the transition from the outback to the city is made as comfortable as possible in the circumstances.

I understand your point but come on the guy has been here three days. You cant force mateship regardless of who it is it still must be earnt. All the boys seemed to include him where possible. He has already been nicknamed Lj by the boys and was having a ball especially during the tennis ball keepings off excercise. There were three gents standing in front of me discussing his transition one being Rupert Betheras (who identified his talent and got him to the pies) and two other gents (one may have been his father or Palmerston coach maybe). We are obviously wary conscious of the special circumstances with his transition and are trying to put the right things in place.

I was at training Monday morning when Liam was introduced to the playing group. The club already has a mentor/contact in place - an aboriginal guy in his mid-40's who was speaking with Connolly and Bailey. He was wearing a brown and gold tracksuit top - couldn't make out the logo as I was more interested in the goings on on the track. Liam appeared to be getting on very well with Aussie and Matty Whelan. Davey came out a little later and also seemed very friendly toward him. Of the senior guys, all of Green, Bruce and JMac spent some time with him. I think he'll be fine. What was more noticeable was Bennell and Jetta right away from the other indigenous boys. Obviously those 2 are very close.

The gentleman you speak of is the same one I referred to as potential father/coach. On second thought I would think he is neither of these but is definitely a mentor/contact of some sort as you mentioned. The coaches appeared happy for him to just wander out into training and mingle with the group at times during the session. In nearly all instances where the group broke into non positional sub groups all of the aboriginal boys appeared to gravitate to the same group.
