A definite irony given the source..lol.. But amongst his words ( Oswalds ) are the sealers to thsi s deal for me. Its that his is multis-sided and could take a turn in many positions. Should we draft him I would realy like to see Bailey try him out al lover the place. Bails seems to do this anyway. Maaric..an obvious small forward gets a gig far from home etc. The beauty of someone like Watts is, even if he is playing forwad on a day..if he is being nutted ot of the game yo bring him right back into it along a wing.. His defenders wil have coronaries and another of our forwards comes into play. The versatilty to shuffle the cards thoughout a game must surely make this bloke the monty of monties !!

Id liek Rich too..but alas we can only have one. Be interesting to see who's still knocking around at 17.

Watts not to like..?? Watts left to figure out ?? Watts hard about this selection really

Well I was in the Rich camp too and if we took him first, well I wouldnt be devastated but Jack Watts is making me salivate. Sure he is a bit skinny at the moment but so was Cale Morton and he made his mark on some games in his first year so why not Jack?????

That article was so good - Jack Watts #4 Melbourne Football Club - marquee player.... I dont think that is really dreaming but hopeful that we finally get us a superstar!!!!! No pressure or anything Jack!! :D

That little snippet about the school footy really makes that dudes friends who keep sprouting he's not much good look like idiots

just before u comment again, notice if u look a few posts up that i am exited about watts so dont get ur knickers in a not if u think that im against taking watts...

however, those snippets were from the footy manager at his school and from his sandy dragons team

they are never going to say anything bad, so u cant read tooo much into these things

now, before u start bitching again, this is what i said on the previous post:

-i know about 26/27 people that have played against him at some stage and they laugh when i comment about jack watts being a superstar and a lot of them dont think he is all that special

basically, hes played a couple of bad games and they dont think he should go as the number one pick

(mind you that's their opinion and not actually mine)

-eastie boyz, if u actually read what i said: they dont believe he should go as the number 1 pick, and when they have played against him, whilst they still think he is pretty good, they don't think (going by the couple of games they have played with/against him) that he compares with chriss judd/tom hawkins/xavier ellis/cyril rioli/luke ball/cambell brown etc at the same level at this stage which i still think is true.

whilst i still think he could turn out to be better than all of those players, right now, he is not dominating the APS comp as much as some believe that these players were

basically, they have more merit to comment than people that have watched 3 minutes of him on youtube

they never said anything like "he wont turn out to be a superstar" but for somebody that is sprouted as the some absolute schoolboy superstar/God by some, they dont think that he is that good right now.

yes, i personally think he could turn out to be anything and that is why i want to take him at number 1 pick, however, it is important to see these things from another aspect, rather than a highlights clip or someone spruiking their own player (ie ossie or the guy from BGS)

i actually went to the effort of watching him play and i thought that his movement and his marking skills were pretty awesome, yet his kicking was atrocious and hence i was a little turned off by him on the day...going by that, that is the only thing i could have judged by at the time

to repeat myself so u understand: i still believe (and so do a lot of them) that he could turn out to be a superstar, but right now, they dont think, in comparison to others at this level, that he is as good as everyone is making him out to be and hence in his current state, some of them dont think he is the best 17/18 y o in the country and therefore in their opinion should not go number 1.

--it might surprise you, but when people make comments like this, they are making comments about him as a schoolboy and not a future potentially great AFL star...

"AFL" at school level is not all people talk or care about, and when they make comments on players, they are relating it to school football because that is what they play in..

--for most people at school, this year in particular, the schoolboy football on the weekend is just as important (if not more) than their AFL team..hence, when they say they dont think jack watts is that special, they are commenting on the game that he played for his school when he didnt or did play very well...not on him as a future AFL player

they are not thinking about draft etc, they are thinking about the current state

i dont want people misunderstanding this

they have never said he wont turn out to be the best player, (and i hope and think that he will be),

they are commenting on him as a player at school football, where, although he has played some great games, he has also played some not so great games

....so if i hear/read another person say that "person x was crap at this age and turned out to be a brownlow medallist bla bla bla," i will find it annoying because these comments from my mates were made on how good he is now, and it is fact that whilst he is extremely good, he has also played some bad games

do u get the point?

I think I'll back my own eyes and that of Barry Richardson, who said he's the best junior he's seen, over some jealous pimply friends of yours.

You may not know - Richardson is a multiple premiership player from Richmond who played in the 60's and 70's. He's also coached elite junior footy teams and is a former chairman of selectors at the MFC.

And Watts' kicking is superb.

Nugget, how many of the 26/27 of your friends played on any of these players you mentioned and how many of them?

"they don't think (going by the couple of games they have played with/against him) that he compares with chriss judd/tom hawkins/xavier ellis/cyril rioli/luke ball/cambell brown etc at the same level at this stage which i still think is true"

By my reckoning, only Cyril Rioli and possibly Hawkins/Ellis (and most likely as naive year 10s anyway). I can't see how they can say how Watts is in relation to Judd Ball etc.

not when he kicks 1 goal 4

i saw judd play in his year 12 - mine too.

he kicked 8 goals in the first quarter against us - mind you, he was playing at full forward and we got smashed in the middle.

he was just way too strong overhead. i saw none of the explosive pace that day, and he kicked all his goals from set shots.

you could tell he was good, but not in the way that he is good at AFL, if that makes sense.

when i say 26-27, im talking about the 21 from the school team plus the 5 or 6 i know well from other school first teams

yes, there are 5 boys in this years team that played with or againt hawkins/ellis/rioli in the last 3 years

when i mention others, it is all a bit of heresay evidence i admit (coming from coaches and people's opinions) but it seems a common trend that they dont personally believe watts compares to the judds/balls in their day at this level

--in reply to hanabal, dont get me wrong, the guys in the team think that he is extremely good, but when he plays a game when he kicks 1 goal, 4 behinds and doesnt make "the best 6", it seems surprising that people are accolading how good his kicking is and how much he stands out.

im not saying that these boys are more experianced than this richmond bloke, all i am doing is stating their opinions and u cant blame them from thinking this when they go into the match thinking that they are playing against some absolute freak of nature/stand out number 1 pick, yet he doesnt play very well....can u expect them to then think that he is the best 17/18 yo in the country after he has a bad game?

Wasn't he injured that day, and that's why he was playing forward?

he had both shoulders strapped. he had two recos afterwards.

he was still waaay too strong overhead.

watts isnt that strong, yet, and in a key spot lik CHF it counts for a lot. but so does movement and pace - and if he has those two but not the strength then his game will suffer in the short term, but in the long term his game will be awesome because he can get the strength by working hard in the gym.

besides, everyone has their off days, and he still had 5 shots on goal

exactly, his game will be awesome in the long term but currently at schoolboy level, some people believe that he is not the best 17/18 y o in the country and i can sometime see why.

besides, everyone has their off days, and he still had 5 shots on goal

hence, why i said that his marking and movement were fantastic but his kicking was atrocious on that day

--people do have their off days, but if u only see them when they have off days, how can u then come out and say, they are absolute superstars and understand what everyone is talking about

if someone saw buddy on an off day, and only on that one or two days when he doesnt play well, they are not going to think he is very good and understandably, they would be surprised at people saying that he is the best player in the country

FWIW in an article about Hawthorn's recruiting they said when they saw Buddy play in the WAFL colts he was nowhere near BOG in any of the games.

From a personal perspective on Watts, if I saw some 6'5" kid who could jump higher, run faster and change direction faster than anyone else, all at the age of 16 or 17 I'd think he was some kind of freak - throw in the fact he can play a bit and it's understandable why he's being touted as #1.

tbh I think your friends need to realise because of his size, and the type of player he is, he won't be dominating in the manner Judd or Hawkins did.

exactly...

and what they said, was that he isnt as good "right now," which i think is true

fwiw, these guys im talking about are not too bad themselves, 4 of them went to state screening, and another bunch of them have been asked to nominate for the draft.

So essentially the argument is coming down Watts being widely regarded as a Number 1 pick and a group of 25 or so Schoolboys, mostly Melbourne Grammar boys who would have played against him once, who say he shouldn't be pick one.

Obviously, if he is regarded as being possibly as good as a Buddy one day, then he would be a worthy Pick One. I know who's opinion I'd back, no offence

i know whose opinions i'd back as well and i've been saying that all along mate.

the argument that i was trying to say, is that these boys dont think that he is currently the best junior in the country...most of them couldnt care less whether he has potential or not, they just care about how good he is now, and whilst they still think he is pretty good, he didnt play very well against them, so judging him by that match, they don't rate him very highly.

again, if people attempted to read my entire posts, my mates are going by how good he is now, and basically, if some of them were asked, "who is currently the best junior in the country?" (which is what pick 1 usually is), they probably wouldnt consider watts to be it. they are not claiming to be experts. i am not claiming them to be experts, i am just stating that there is more than one opinion about watts and some people dont rate him as highly as we do here at demonland...

I still think it's important to look at these things from another perspective, that is all.

Nugget, please learn that we don't give a flying [censored] on the opinions of people who have played against him once, especially since he was balancing school footy, TAC Cup and maybe even the Carnival at the time.

That Larke medal represents that he is one of if not the best U18 in Australia. Alright? I don't care if he had one average school footy game, and i'm sure many other people on here dont.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
