2008 Player review - #9 David Neitz

Recommended Posts

9. David Neitz [191 cm 100 kg 22.01.75 - 306 games (5 in 2008), 631 goals (3 in 2008)] - a constant neck injury and a broken disc in the back of his neck put an end to the old warhorse's career. Neita retired earlier this year after playing the first five games with limited output.

The loyal Demon leaves the club as one of its greats, holding the club's records for most games, most goals, and longest-serving captain.

My son proudly wore No 9 on each of his Demon jumpers up to present, an indication of this family's love for Neitz. I was fortunate to have seen the big blokes entire career with MFC. By weight of numbers he is the greatest player to have worn Red n' Blue in our time. He was the best kick for goal from outside 50 we have ever had. He busted packs like no-one else and he took no prisoners when backmen tried to rough him up. Above all, he was fair, courageous and committed. He was quicker than given credit for, and to top it off a great clubman and friend of the fans!

I remember watching him come off the ground favouring that arm thinking to myself.."ooh I have a bad feeling about this, I hope this isn't the last time I see him come off the ground...not like that...deserves better " and of course fate in its twisted way did just that. A stalwart and undoubtedly one of th greatest to pull on a jumper for Melbourne and he always did it with such pride. Well done and thankyou David.

Does anyone know if any role is planned for him 09-onwards at MFC ?

Yeh, he's ok, Neita. Champion footballer. Nuff said.

One thing I will say. Prior to 2002 season, David Neitz and the leadership group were hell bent on "gaining back respect" of the football world after a horror 2001 season. That opening game in 2002 against Hawthorn was a statement, and they began in a manner that was true to their very word.

The playing group and staff might want to re-visit this after the last 18 months of footy... <_<

Thanks for giving your Heart & Soul to the MFC for so long Neita. You did it with Style. I wish you had retired the year before though, annointed a new Captain and helped coach the new Forward Line. But i say that in Hind sight- no one was to know.

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs West Coast

It’s game day and the Demons return to Melbourne to play the Eagles at the MCG for the first time in over a decade. A win keeps the Dees finals hopes alive whereas a loss will almost certainly slam the finals window shut.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
