Cough *tanking* cough cough :)

Id say theres a generous helping of list 'management" here...but in tandem with other outcome possibilities. Bailey likes to see players step up to the mark..he likes to see what some do under pressure and how well they handle themsleves in new tasks..What better time to do it when your not really in the fray of finals contention.

No cause for concern here folks...move along :)

To drop jones is just plain stupid. Jones has been willing and able to go in and get the ball and for that he is punished. The reason he is always under pressure when he gets the ball is the rest of the midfield is not up to the job of helping him out.

I dont like to set a culture of "Try hard, be successful, get DROPPED" - To close to carlton's decisions last year for my liking.

I agree.

It also means a chance for guys in decent form to step up.

Always finds himself in no-mans land playing, catch up. Really how many clearances has he been getting?

Rd 17 Clearances Clangers Cont Poss

Jones 3 4 4

Valenti 6 2 6

Rd 16

Jones 1 1 4

Valenti 2 3 7

Rd 15

Jones 3 3 5

Valenti 1 3 5

Rd 14

Jones 3 4 4

Valenti 2 5 7

I have used Valenti as comparison only because he is similar type and roll, though he probably had less game time for the earlier rounds. I think he was part of the full mid-field rotation against the kangas.

Article on Bailey at afl.com.au - link here.

Relevant bit below:

Player of the future Nathan Jones was a surprise omission for some this week, but Bailey said there was nothing sinister in the 20-year-old’s demotion to the VFL.

“Nathan is a very driven young man, he puts an enormous amount of pressure on himself to play well, and I think for a young player that’s a good thing, but it’s nothing more than a little bit of confidence and a little bit of form,” he said.

“Hopefully he’ll go back to Sandy (Sandringham) and get a little bit of that; I’d rather him go back at this stage rather than his form fall further which would be even harder for him to come back from.

“But he’s a very driven young man, he’s an exciting player and he’s had a little hiccup at the moment, but he’ll work his way through that.”

I forecast it could happen 2 weeks ago, and now it has..

What is everyones opinion on it?

Must be form. I said a few weeks ago that he may be rested because he was very sore, I thought he may have been rested for the Fremantle game, but he came up in the end.

Hope he works on it at Sandy, and gets back in.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
