Which jumper v Freo?

Recommended Posts

Wasn't it said (McNamee I think but don't quote me) that the awful silver thingy will never be seen or heard from again?

McNamee said the jumper will change next season. But we will have too wear it where we do clash for the remaining games! So we will most likely be wearing it tomorrow. Essendons jumper today agianst the Tiggers was a shocker I thought!

Pretty sure we will be wearing it tomorrow. But end of this, or next, season we are allowed to present a new jumper to wear as an alternate strip

AFL rules require clubs to keep clash strips for at least 2 years... however we've been given an exception and will be able to change our clash strip at the end of this season...

and yes, we'll be wearing it tomorrow, I think freo is our biggest clash

I think Melbourne should opt for there 80's jumper "(light blue and red) as there alternative strip. This alone or a a small addition to this jumper would suit.

What do you think?

That's definitely one possibility, although a few people here seem to blame it for our abysmal form during the '80s. There were some awesome suggestions in a forum a few weeks ago. Did you see any of them?

When it was announced that the AFL gave us the OK to change our change strip at the end of the season, it was also stated that we would still have to wear the current clash jumper against Freo and Essendon this year.

If we're wearing the crap jumper there's a good chance we'll be tanking the game because we play football the same way that the jumper looks when we wear it.

There has never been a clash of jumpers in VFL/AFL football with Melbourne as one of the teams

You could argue that Collingwood and either North and Hawthorn playing on a cow paddock being viewed via a Black and White TV may be a little harder to watch

We no longer play on poor football ground surfaces and most people have a Colour TV these days

We have always had a difference in the shorts being worn for the home and away teams

The decision is pure marketing and little common sense

Our silver jumper is an eyesore and i do hope the person responsible for its inception has left and joined the trend setting fashion industry

I'd have to disagree with this Swampfox. There is a definite clash with the main Freo jumper with the dark background (purple/navy blue) even to the backs of the jumpers with the red across the top - on a less than sunny day it can be quite difficult telling them apart. Melbourne could probably quite rightly argue that Freo should be forced to wear their clash strip and question why the AFL approved the Freo jumper in the first place given the clash, but we all know that's not how it works.

The Freo jumper is god awful. They could however make it look rather good if they removed the green and red and used a purple jumper with a white anchor as their main strip and a white jumper with a purple anchor.

That's our traditional jumper though, the only one that hasn't changed since the beginning. There is actually meaning behind the red and green (be it starboard/port on a ship or the reference to the Italian heritage in Freo). As I said above, the AFL is at fault for allowing this jumper to be used, but it's now our jumper and we are as attached to it as your club is to yours.

I like the white with purple anchor, but I find the purple with white anchor to be very, very dark and it is really only used for our Starlight Purple Haze day.

So your saying you find it difficult to tell Freo and Melbourne apart even with the different colour shorts ?

IMO they got it wrong in the first place by not having the the only colour nobody else uses in the competition and thats GREEN

If Freo has their jumper predominatley GREEN the problem would not exist

they have a similar designed jumper as the saints with the white anchor

I remember the Frematle sides in the WAFL very well

South Fremantle had the same jumper as South Melbourne and East Fremantle had Light Blue with a large White Vertical stripe on the front (similar split to StKilda)

The chance to have something DIFFERENT is lost as they started as a NEW CLUB with NO TRADITION at all

It was a NO BRAINER from the very start and the AFL still stuffed it up

I can only imagine the stuff up they will make with the 2 new teams that will be entering the competition soon

I remember when the western district football league amalgamated with 4 Mt Gambier and 2 other SA teams in the early sixties to form the Western Border Football League 2 sides had Richmond Jumpers (Portland and North Gambier) so what they did was invert the jumper so the predominant colour for North Gambier was Yellow with a blask sash

Problem solved

This is kiddies stuff mate

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
