Demons break all-time membership record

Thu 03 July, 2008

The Melbourne Football Club has officially broken its all-time membership record, following the release of final membership figures for the 2008 season.

As of 30 June, the Club had signed a total of 29,619 members, surpassing the previous record of 28,077 members set in 2007.

The strong surge in membership has come in the three weeks following the arrival of Jim Stynes and his new board. In the final three weeks before the 30 June cut-off, the membership department was inundated by sales, with an additional 2,295 members pledging their support to the Club in that time.

Club President Jim Stynes said it was a great achievement to reach the membership record.

“We thank all of our 29,619 members, who have pledged their support to the Melbourne Football Club in our 150th anniversary year.

“This is a strong achievement for the Club, and caps off an exciting three week period. Considering where the membership number was at only three weeks ago, it is a milestone achievement to break the record, and everyone at the Club can be proud of that.

“Personally, I have been overwhelmed by the groundswell of support the Club has received since the arrival of our new board. It’s great to see so many loyal and passionate supporters signing up and being a part of the rejuvenation of this great Club.

“This is also a clear indication that our members have belief and faith in our on-field future under the guidance of coach Dean Bailey.

“There is no doubt that 29,619 members is a fantastic base to be working with, and we will aim for a bigger and better result in 2009. To do this, we need to give our fans the emotional and rational reasons to support this club, regardless of who we’re playing - or what position we hold on the ladder. Sunday afternoon’s win against the Brisbane Lions is a great example of the excitement this club can produce”.

Good job everyone.

Even fellow poster 'realist' with his pet membership (that he bought for himself) should be commended.

A extra 3,000 members pretty much + I think a higher than thought crowd v the Lions I wonder how this will help us in terms of money and how much we will lose come years end.

Great response in the few weeks since Stynes came on board. It would be interesting to know how many signed up on the back of the Brisbane game, too.

Props to Judee and nineteen (from Demonology) for organising volunteers to call lapsed members.

PS. Where'd you pull this article from? Bad form to copy/paste whole articles from other places - if you didn't write it, that is :P

Great effort Delmonlanders, and fellow members everywhere! We should be aiming for 33k+ in '09.

29,619 members

Unreal result!

Especially given our on-field performance and where we are on the ladder... this is far beyond expectations. Too bad we could get that last 381 to crack the 30,000... but things are looking bright for next year if we can keep all our members from this year, and grow on that.

Congratulations to the club, everyone give yourselves a pat on the back :)

Great work! That's such good news, i'm pumped now. Wow, so close to 30,000, that's amazing.

So much this week has made me say wow!

"Sunday afternoon’s win against the Brisbane Lions is a great example of the excitement this club can produce" Love this bit.

Our club, this club, we are all in it together. Stynes knows it, and he won't let up on it. We are an exciting club, one to watch in the coming years. We will build a brand and be strong again

There surley would have been a a couple of thousand more people tempted to sign on the back of Jimmy as well, but maybe thought they would cool their jets till next season when they can reap the benefits from buying a full membership.

I am convinced we will be pushing up toward 32,000 next season.

This really is exciting. This year is probably our worst on field since the early 80`s. To think we can come up with these numbers now is awesome. Imagine when we start working our way back into the 8 in 2 years time with Jimma still at the helm. We will be a force once again !

Agreed, a fantastic result considering our year to date but it does need to be a springboard to bigger and better things. 30k members should be only the beginning, we should be trying to push towards 34-35k in the next few years. Improved performances on field will help that considerably. Let's put some figures together:

5K members @ $165 Adult 11 = $825k. 4K adult members + 1K concession 11 members still equals $775K at current prices.

Take a few thousand dollars out for admin fees. Those kind of additional funds each year will surely kill any interest accrued on our current debts, as well as giving us some pocket money!.

The Demons’ aggressive small forward who kicks goals and defends the Demons’ ball in the forward arc. When he’s on song, he’s unstoppable but he did blot his copybook with a three week suspension in the final round. It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield.
