Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Wonder if Cale is going to get sent to Sandy for a week or 2 to get some confidence up??

Is it possible we've decided to play Newton in the 2s just so he can play as a full forward and not have to compete with Sautner?

Could be that he is being told he has to put in the hard yards before getting a gig in the 1sts let alone the D`s and earn his spot!

I would hope thats not the case. 3rd and 4th rate defenders and he'd learn absolutely nothing.

Good to see McNamara named congratulations.

Just on a sidenote keep an eye out for Rees Thomas on Port's side. He is named in the back pocket but pretty sure he is playing CHF. He played at Oakleigh Chargers and made the Vic Metro U18 team 3 years ago at CHF. Didn't get a gig in the Port 1's last year but has been shown faith by the new coach Gary Ayres this year and has been playin some very good footy. Im biased as he is a mate but its good to see that persistance can pay off. Pretty sure he wears number 17 but if anyone can give an opinion on him who is at the game would be great.

Shattered to not see Petterd and Newton!

VERY dissappointed to see Juice and Ricky P not named in the 1st's. From all reports, last week Ricky dominated and was BOG in less than 3/4's, and Juice kicked 4.4 in his first game for 7 weeks. What more did they need to do?

On a positive note however...

It's very good to see Tom McNamara finally get a chance at Sandy! I'm glad he's turned his recent poor form around and here's hoping he can cement himself in that side and maybe even push for a game with the Dee's later this year (if we're lucky, or unlucky... depends how u look at it).

I've only seen him play once and I know he was very bottom-age, much like Bate, Dunn and Newton were, so will probably spend the remainder of this year between the VFL 1st's and 2nd's. But i think (and i know i'm not alone), he looked very impressive against Geelong in the NAB cup, and not at all out of place against the big boys. A bit skinny but reads the play exceptionally well, Colin Wisbey had him rated as a top-20 pick in his pre-draft profiles last year i think, but slipped so far down the draft order because of an injury hampered year. His upside is huge as he will probably grow a couple of cm's and gain 6-8 kgs after a couple of solid pre-seasons.

I remember reading a coaches report from Chopper Lovell a few weeks back saying that Tom had been struggling in the VFL 2's, lacking confidence and down on form. Also heard from a mate of mine who is pretty good mates with a lot of people at Sandy FC, that word was Tom had been feeling rather homesick and was seemingly having difficulty settling into Melbourne. It's good to know he's turned it around. I just hope, if or when he comes good, 2 or 3 years down the track, that he doesnt jump ship back home to SA, Scotty Thompson-style...

When Sandy play a stand alone team there is a 12/10 rule....possibly why Juice and Petterd aren't named ....

I'm going to contradict my last post now... but, as happy as i am to see guys like McNamara (and Zomer) getting named in the 1's, I'd much prefer to see Juice and Petterd in the VFL senior team, as they are further along in their development and if fit, are close to being best 22. McNamara and Zomer are KPP's a long way off of playing AFL still and have time on their side, but Newton has shown some capability at AFL level in the past, and his career now is somewhat at a crossroads. Would have made much more sense to name him in the senior team as part of the 12/10 rule ahead of the younger guys, wouldnt it?

No big deal really if they spend one more week down there. If Juice gets amongst the goals again then promote him. Pettard is really not in a position to be rushed back and far too valuable to risk. Let them have another game and see how they go. If Pettard can play out most of the game then promote him.

Would like to see McNamara as he is a bit of a smokey late in the draft (our last pick from memory).

Less so with Petterd than with Newton, but i just fail to see how playing at that inferior level will benefit them? Especially Newton, who has had a few years in the system now and needs to be challenged. Playing against skinny kids in the VFL 2's is not going to challenge him.

Because he's coming back from OP. If he was to play seniors for Sandy and there were injuries then his programme of playing only a certain amount of time goes out the window, in the seconds it's easier to manage. Same with Newton, with his knee. Given our year so far why rush these kids back, just to satisfy us the supporters? The priority has to be about getting their bodies right first.

Personally I'm happy for Ricky to only play Sandy seconds for the rest of the year to get him right for rd 1 2009. Newton once he's found touch and can run out a game can return via Sandy 1s.

agree with that. and the fact that sautner is back which limits newtons chances to get his hands on the footy.

Petterd is unlikely to be ready yet to put his body under maximum load after such a long layoff, to play him in the Zebra 1sts could be detrimental.

Newton I feel likely has been working behind the scenes on his attitude & new outlook & if so the 2's is a good place to try to piece things together. His next season should be starting now.

Personally I'm happy for Ricky to only play Sandy seconds for the rest of the year to get him right for rd 1 2009.

In hindsight, i agree with that. As i said, i'm less concerned about Ricky playing 2's than Newton, as he's come off a very long lay-off and a few different injuries. To manage him in the 2's is more than reasonable. My only qualm about it, and i know i probably jumped the gun a bit earlier when i said he should be straight back in the Sandy 1's after just 2 games in the ressies, despite his long lay-off, was because he is sooo much better than that level, even now in the earliest stage of his return. Proof is his BOG from 3/4's of footy in just his 2nd game back.

However, given his circumstances and bad luck with injury, and the running role he plays, as well as Sandys 1st's requiring 22 100% fit players... it is probably best to wait until he can get a decent fitness base and more confidence in his body before playing him in an unrestricted manner in the VFL.

Newton, on the other hand, will be gaining absolutely nothing from playing against sub-standard opposition in the 2's, and not getting any fitter playing there either. He plays as a deep forward, essentially using his height, leap and well-timed, short leads to win the footy. Fitness and aerobic capacity at VFL level, even after missing 7 weeks, should not really be an issue for him, given the deep role he plays and that he has shown himself a more than capable VFL player. He kicked 4.4 and probably could have got a couple more from about 80% ground time, in his first game back thru the ressies, which indicates he must indeed have some 'juice' in the tank. He been around long enough and played at a high enough level to adapt back to the speed and physicality of VFL seniors you'd think. And he had a near full pre-season.

He did miss a lot of footy though, and wasn't in the best of form before he got suspended and then injured, which may be a hint as to why he missed selection. As some have suggested, he might not be showing he's working hard enough, has shown poor attitude and is being 'stung' back into action by being kept down there. He certainly didnt show any work-ethic in his last appearance for Melbourne in R1, but thats another topic altogether.

None of us can really say for sure whats going on behind the scenes and if Sandringham believed it were best to play Newton in the ressies for their own team balance or whatever, then so be it.

I'm still firmly of the opinion that he should have been selected to play for Sandy this week, regardless of whether Sautner is in the side or not. One game playing inferior opposition to gain a bit of confidence back is enough! We need to see if he can really play. You'd imagine if Dean Bailey had any influence in the decision, Newton would definitely be playing VFL this weekend. Not just to satisfy the supporters, but because if we're fair dinkum about Newton becoming a player, he needs to be given every opportunity to show something at VFL level, where he will at least be challenged and can push for selection.

I'd rather Juice came in this week and kicked 2 or 3 goals in the VFL against a strong, mature opponent, then see him kick 6 or 7 in the 2's against some poor kid.

Is there any chance they're keeping Ricky away from the bright lights so that the new GC team won't look at him? Or does that whole"Queenslander poaching" thing not come into effect for a few years yet?

Probably fanciful thinking, but I can't think of any other reason why either would be kept in cotton wool.

It gives me the biggest proof yet that Juice may be delisted at year's end. But as for Ricky, he has show already that he's a good player. Why WOULDN"T we be playing him?

On the contrary dd I believe we should be encouraging the new team to have a look. Petterd looks ok but I'd be more than happy to trade him for a first rounder.

More like definitely. See Graz's post

Too many conspiracy theories. The reasons will no doubt be a combination of things. The 12 player rule, management of Petterd's injury and Sautners return.

I think it is likely that part of Newton's frustration with going back to Sandy is having to compete with Sautner to be the focal point.

I agree with RR. I like Petterd and want to see him return fully fit whether that be this year or next. Same with Frank Grimes. And Jarka, Petterd won't be traded.

And Jarka, Petterd won't be traded.

You're probably correct in saying that he won't be traded, however I'm not convinced that not even considering it is the best thing for the club.

The facts are that the new GC team will have a heap of early picks to trade and they'll be desperate to get some experienced players onto their list. The lure of a home grown Queenslander might mean that they'd be prepared to give up a pick above his actual value. remember they'll have a heap of picks to throw away, that means that they're not going to be as picky as a club would be with just one 1st rounder.

We have to be smart, and dismissing a possible trade without even considering it is not smart.

This is strange but Ricky Petterd is named as part of the interchange for the reserves. It suggests possibly that there might be a doubt over his fitness. The fact that Newton's not there suggests that he's unfit for one reason or other (I suppose that's pretty obvious isn't it?)

There has clearly been no change in club policy about keeping members in the dark about player injury situations. If this was a strategic or tactical thing I could understand but these are young players who won't be playing in the seniors this week so why clam up about their condition?

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
