Game night thread: Melbourne v Hawthorn
Straight Sets Simon replied to Range Rover's topic in Melbourne Demons
This game plan needs to come under scrutiny. -
The problem is we heard it all before when Bailey came on board, meanwhile players at other clubs at a similar age all seem to be developing fine.

Possibly, but I think it's about working smart, not just hard.
-
For me the lack of speed has a lot to do between the ears. Melbourne players need to realise that their first five steps are when they should be working their hardest, acceleration is poor. On top of that Melbourne players don't think ahead enough, that is they tend to all watch the ball. As Malthouse alluded to in the commentary there isn't enough trust between the players where Player A goes for the ball while Player B puts on a block or runs to where the ball will be, not to where it is. For me, these two factors play a large role in the perceived slowness of the team.
-
The slowness of the team I believe has a lot to do with poor acceleration (not necessarily top speed). I've mentioned this many times but Trengove's biggest weakness is his first five steps. It's interesting watching Jurrah who might not have the greatest top speed but over his first ten metres he really fires up. This needs to be how all the players are, it creates space and gives them more time and opportunity to dispose of the ball. This will also help increase disposal efficiency as players aren't forced to hit targets under as much pressure. This would also help with the spread, as I mentioned earlier Geelong think two or three possessions ahead, they move for one and other to create opportunities instead of just ball watching all the time. Even watching GWS today, the players always looked to be light footed, never standing around always moving and when then did move their acceleration was quick. I hope the coaches have noticed this too because it is glaringly obvious.

Fitzpatrick is not the answer, worth a try but by no means the answer until he can learn to kick properly.
-
I only saw the first half and a few bits and pieces of the second half, but the one big thing that stood out to me was that when Geelong had the ball, their players were thinking two or even three possessions ahead. They worked for each other and ran to where the ball will be. When Melbourne had the ball it was a case of get the ball then think what to do, where to go. Geelong are a great team, if you put any Melbourne player in that team they would be instantly better with the strong leaders and culture in that side.

186: the details according to Caroline Wilson
Straight Sets Simon replied to a topic in Melbourne Demons
If you're sick and have just run six or seven kilometers with Cameron Ling hanging off you, sleep would seem like a good option. The one line I did not like was: "Today Melbourne enters round six winless and one of the high draft picks Bailey lost games for - Jack Watts - has been dropped." I'm pretty sure in 2008 we were just rubbish, no need to tank that year. -

I was lucky enough to be on a flight to Asia during this game, so I never had to sit through the ordeal. It feels like I was reading a crime thriller, not a football story about the Demons. -
Patrick Dangerfield ... Let's get him!
Straight Sets Simon replied to Range Rover's topic in Melbourne Demons
We should take him with pick 4 in the 2007 draft. Oh wait. -
The one problem he has always had is his lack of intensity. There were a couple of times against the Saints where he just did not try hard enough. This is why Hurley is rated, because he goes hard to get the ball, Watts doesn't.

Watts lacked intensity last week, disappointing that he is out but it is the right call.

One of my favourite players, this after seeing him in the VFL and thinking he would really struggle. He loves the open space of the MCG and thrives on it.

Williams recovering after coma ordeal
Straight Sets Simon replied to Dee Fan's topic in Melbourne Demons
Poor bloke, I wish him a very speedy recovery. -
I thought his ruck work was surprisingly good tonight.
-
An improved game tonight, I thought he started really well. I hope for his sake he can physically develop because he is still the size of a 16 year old.

I started a thread last year talking about his lack of pace, tonight he was run down by Goddard. He needs to work on his first five steps urgently otherwise he will go backwards. Yes, not all great players are quick but it is seriously hampering his ability to impact games.

SYLVIA PERMANENT FULL FORWARD?
Straight Sets Simon replied to demon_fanatic's topic in Melbourne Demons
Sylvia needs to be played on the ball, he isn't a natural ball magnet so he needs to be near the ball more often to have a big impact. -
That's good, because we would hate to have the players trying to kick goals.
