  1. This draft is compromised to the ridiculous. North should not get a 1st round in this draft. How are middle of the range clubs supposed to improve if they are pushed back to far in the draft. Crikey, if Northern clubs get a free hit at Academy picks below 40 they should be paying a 20% points premium for getting the player they want (at least for the top 10). 20% discount on top of getting a potential gun player. - stupid. We will need to go 'hell for leather' to get GCs pick 4. If not at least a good move up the order. It will cost a mint in points though!!!
  2. That is why Goody is happy if our talls in a pack situation can get the ball to ground in a good spot for our smalls to work from. Its get the ball in and keep it in. Petty is smart on the lead and good in a one on one up forward. Petty, Melksham injuries JVR suspension and Brayshaw concussion stuffed our chances - luck does play a part. You need a pretty healthy list going into and during finals.
  3. There will be a lot of existing list reflection before the draft. Watson is regarded by phantom drafters as a possible elite. Will he and Kosi be able to rotate through the midfield to share the load? Caddy could well be Curnow like so the talk goes. Will Jefferson fill TMcs spot? Will JVR keep improving? The reasons for our lousy conversion will be examined. Our game plan involves getting the ball in and keeping it there. Injuries to Melksham, Petty and JVR suspension hurt big time. Peter More said that with Petty out we had no big target up forward and JVR is just a 19 year old - so we were always going to push the 'stinky stuff' up hill in a final. Do we need an elite mid to allow Track to play mainly forward? May is heading for 30 plus. Do we need an O'Sullivan/Murphy type to step up in a few seasons? Do we need to draft one of the top young rucks in the top 25 or so? One thing they will take into account is that Kalani White is in the 2025 draft and what position will he likely play. This will play a part in our drafting. Kalani is part of the GC academy which has potentially up to 4 kids with potential to be elite in the 2025 draft. Hope he choses us!!!!! Unless the AFL steps in we could see another 2 or 3 early GC picks compromising the draft. The Northern states knowing what they are going to get from the Academies have the advantage of drafting around this. For example Sydney knowing it was getting Gulden and Campbell (mid types) via Academy could target talls in the draft. Huge advantage plus a sure pick up at a 20% pick points discount.
  4. I expect they will go in hard to trade up. Unlike WCE we do not need numbers we need a couple of elite players for a refresh.
  5. Add pick 29 from Sydney for Grundy although we may do a deal for their pick 11 and we pass on a later pick.
  6. Giants up at half time. If they beat Port we get pick 13?? Fraction more trade power for us!
  7. Need some luck with injury. Melks and Petty pre finals - huge bad luck. Brayshaw flattened early in 1st final likely huge bearing on result of the final. We need another tall forward - Caddy would be great. Another tall back would be good - O'Sullivan? Another top mid ball getter - Brown, Woey can develop?, A hit with one of our 20's 2023 picks.
  8. JVR, McVee, we blooded a Woey, Laurie got a couple of games. Petty can play forward.
  9. Talk is GC will put 10 on the table and get way overs when they on trade it. There is a fairly good chance of a highly rated player being there. Our 2023 1st rounder not so attractive. We are still in with a chance for pick 4 but we may have to throw in our future 1st with some of our 2023 picks. We will also get picks for Grundy and anyone else who bails. I think the AFL will have to restrict the discount to one player per draft per club.
  10. Latest is that Grundy prefers the Swans for lifestyle balance. In any case even if we go for GC pick 4 they will likely want most of our 2024 picks plus a future 1st. Maybe we get to keep the 30's pick. The bulldogs alleged offer at 10 and 17 is hard to trump. GC on raw non pushed back picks already have around 4,500 points up their sleeve plus whatever they get for trade outs. They also get a whopping 20% discount on the bids they make. I suspect after trade outs they will be almost be able to use the bulldogs pick 17 to trade for a future pick and use pick 10 to trade to say us for extra points. We would likely pay overs in later picks. GC are in an unprecedented position.
  11. Agree he is getting better as time goes by. Recruiters like those sorts of young players. If we are to extend our 'window' we need quality players coming through even if it takes 2 or 3 years for them to become regulars. We need to nail this draft. Kalini White coming in a few drafts time.
  12. Late developer which is preferred by many recruiters. Gets some good mentions on Rookie me scouting notes. Easy to google. One game noted " eye catching acceleration after sharking hitouts" On another note from a different game a couple of weeks ago " Brown has a turn of speed, shared the ball and has had phenomenal numbers in the last handfull of games". I was searching for opinions on his 'speed'. Seems to be ok. In his last hitout against Eastern he performed just as well if not better than the 'wizard' Watson. Kynan has really stepped up in the U18's after his stint with Casey. Scouting notes say he is a hard worker. Twomey still thinks he will be a rookie or late pick. We may well be on to something here. Time will tell.
  13. Once he launched he had a duty of care to Brayshaw. Commentators are saying Maynard had a duty of care to protect himself so he had to brace etc. Total [censored]. Duty of care to the other player is never removed. He has to wear the consequences of his decision. Yes, its legal to smother a ball but it is not legal to launch at a player and hit his head. Magpies will argue Brayshaw strayed into his path after he kicked it and showed footage. Siad on 'On the Couch' Brayshaw will not likely play again this year'. Have to be careful what is said but it does cross the mind whether a player has seen an opportunity to take another player out and ....... That can never be proven though. Nothing can take away the duty of care. The AFL may argue that there was distinct actions. First an action to smother which was never going to succeed. Second was the brace and launch. The AFL will argue contact was inevitable from the millisecond he launched.
  14. If we get GC's pick i am leaning towards Caddy and O'Sullivan. Look like losing Grundy, Tomlinson, Brown has a dodgy knee and May and TMc nudging the wrong side of 30 although could still see a few years yet. We are getting a small - Brown this draft and he shown trememdous late season improvement.
  15. Probably already posted but ESPN September power rankings are out. Top 30. AFL Draft Power Rankings September 2023 Jasper Chellappah - Harley Reid, Jed Walter, Riley Sanders, Tew Jiath first round bolters emerging - ESPN Also link to points for each draft pick below Points-draft-value.pdf (afl.com.au) If GC trade pick 4 to us with an early bid on Walters we will have picks 5/6. In trade negotiations with GC we agree not to bid on their Academy pick Read they will straight away save 234 points before taking into account what we actually give them. Read would actually be not a bad player to pick up given Grundy and Tomlinson look like leaving, Brown has a bung knee and May and TMc are hitting 30 plus next season. If we get their pick we could do worse than Caddy and O'Sullivan. We have a small in Kynan Brown coming in. Kynan is a late developer (preferred by Recruiters as shows continued improvement). Kicked 5 goals 2 points and 25 possessions last week. Kicked 2 goals 2 points (equal high goal scorer on ground) yesterday against Eastern and was in the top players with 20 disposals. Note he performed better than the highly rated Watson (the wizard) did for Eastern.
  16. Its Carlton next week. McKay out concussion. Martin likely to get a week for striking.
  17. We will know more concerning progress by the end of the next VFL season and the one after (should be getting a few AFL games). Bit early for us to judge but the club would know more and have extended his contract - shows some confidence. In the meantime we sorely miss Petty who is the penciled in FF next year with JVR and Fritter as support. Schache as depth. Brown's knee is stuffed. Still plenty of time to develop Jefferson. If we can nab pick 4 off GC will we go for a Caddy who has immense talent as a 192/3cm forward who may be able to pinch hit as a mid. (did it in the Coates U18's with success)? 1cm taller than Curnow in his draft year. Caddy models himself on Curnow. Different style of player to Fritter, Petty and JVR. That would be a hint as to our forward woes. We also have Kalani White coming in 2 drafts from this year. Not sure where he will play.
  18. Barrett on AFL website says its a football act therefore no suspension. What an [censored]. Does that mean you can spoil in a contest and knock someone out every time? The act of spoiling properly is ok but the act of knocking some one out is not. The ball was likely past Maynard before he even launched. It was a reckless decision as contact was inevitable before he launched himself.
  19. At the end of the day it was a shameful cowardly act. 3 to 4 weeks.
  20. Has to suspended for that for 3 to 4 weeks. Otrherwise its open season on players kicking the ball. The ball had travelled past Maynard when he launched at Brayshaw. It was not an attempt to smoother off the boot. The usual approach to a smoother in that case would be expected to be a vertical leap rather than a lunge at the player. Contact was always going to be made by Maynard once he launched. So the decision he made was sacrifice Brayshaw and save himself by bracing rather than turn it into a down the field free front on tackle which may not have lead to a head knock. Must be a 3 or 4 week suspension. Very bad look for the AFL. May well have effected the result of the game. Given Brayshaw's concussion history this could be very serious. The accident excuse is total BS. You hit a person's property accidently you pay. You hit a player outside the rules accidently of the game you pay. Simple as that. Was it really an accident?
  21. Dogs have a possible F/S as a 1st rounder. Although Croft is undecided according to the media and the bullies have a stack of talls. GS get a 20% Academy pick discount which will probably in total equal around a pick14/15 in an uncompromised draft. GC have already accumulated draft picks and may be interested in our future 1st plus our 22 and 34 and maybe some of what we get if some of our players leave, eg Grundy, Jordan, Harmes etc. That would leave us with picks 5/6 (after GC bid) and late 1st rounder. Another batch of 3 good players at once - is that possible? GC get plenty of points and another 2024 1st rounder. So they get 3 1st round players this year as we do but they will have 2 1st round picks next year.
  22. Its a bit rough judging whether a player will male it based on his 1st year at a club. Everyone develops at different rates.
  23. You make a good point which no doubt will be considered by our Recruiting and list management teams. A generational talent would be a huge pick up. Reid will be a game breaking type of player. Getting 2 early picks though would enable us to pick up maybe a replacement for May (getting older)/Tomlinson, eg O'Sullivan and perhaps Spargo if he has 'run his race' with a Watson or a Caddy to replace T McDonald/B Brown.
  24. The WCE recruiting boss hinted that they would use pick 1 to pick up several players implying it would be traded. They converted pick 2 last year into more picks. So i think it will be on the market. Do we go for pick 1 or do we go for GC's pick 4 and have 2 early picks? I am thinking 2 early picks. Depends how highly we rate Reid
  25. Yes, he looked good and set up a goal or 2. Maybe one of those players who takes some time to adjust to AFL. Did enough to hold his spot in the team IMO.
