Dermie: Melbourne are downhill skiers
Oliver is this season becoming another example of an MFC stuff up. Before you argue take a moment and think about it. Oliver and Gawn are the kind you build teams around and we have......

The AFL wants to reduce tackling
"The AFL's TV ratings have fallen considerably, with a 12.8 per cent decline to the end of their regular season. Cumulative season audience figures for the two codes highlight the NRL's dominance. The NRL's cumulative audience this season was 94.3 million, compared to the AFL's live audience of 89.2m." From the SMH of September 10 2018 PS.. don't forget that the NRL figures include three State of Origin Games which are massive television events. PPS.. the comparison is made pre finals so perhaps AFL caught up

The AFL wants to reduce tackling
16 a side at VFL level for the next 2 years plus (SANFL and WFL) 6-6-6 for last quarter only... it is actually reducing scoring unless risks are taken which teams will not take in the forst three quarters. Reduction of interchange numbers by itself will just change the length of the rest periods. It may have a slight impact upon player fatigue but it's not that simple. Probably needs to be reduction of the number on the bench. Hate the sub rule but you could have one sub for umpire (third party) confirmed injuries. On the complete flip side..a lot of these comments are coming from ground attendees and at game commentators. On TV it has always been difficult to capture the quick run on play. May need to rethink the TV coverage angles if it really worked.

PREGAME: Rd 18 vs West Coast Eagles
so based on Weideman being in the rehab group at training I assume he is no goer for this weekend. Tim Smith to return for another round of musical deckchairs perhaps.

We have the worst I50 to goal ratio ever recorded...
Of course as Super Mercado says it's not that we just don't score it is that we let the ball out so easily. Every club knows how to beat the Goodwin game plan. Some are better at executing than others but just stack the backline and then the quick release in a manner that breaks the zone. Take a step back and think why we play well against Hawthorn. They don't play quick release and our mids etc have time to get back. When they did play quick release in the H&A match in 2018 they slaughtered us. Hell .. how many times have the saints beat us and they just sacked their coach. It's really starting to become a bit of a joke issue.

The AFL wants to reduce tackling
the 50m penalties were brought in because Hawthorn decided in a finals series during the late 80's that it was better to give away the 15 metre penalty than to allow the opposition to play on. The problem with removing the protected areas is that players will deliberately run through a particular area to increase the zone strength. These days they even use the umpire as part of the zone (remember the runners). I suppose I am saying that the coaches will always bend the rules to the max.

The AFL wants to reduce tackling
Interchange reduction at AFL level plus at VFL level reduction in player numbers on field by two players per team. Trial for two years. One could even trial the reduced player numbers on alternate weeks to get a better sample. It's not rocket science. (VFA used to play with 16 players on ground at once.)

Midfield strength
say it again please

We have the worst I50 to goal ratio ever recorded...
Great point have always thought that the 55-60 metre set shot guy who can also play back would be a very damaging player

Gains amid the wreckage
the gains have been very small.. the wreckage on the other hand the problem is that when we thought we might get something out of the remainder of the season which would give cause for optimism in 2020 we are at best treading water if not slipping backwards. Viney seems to be finding some form which is a late season plus

CHANGES: Rd 18 vs West Coast Eagles
doesn't matter but we may as well get a game or two more into Baker and I assume Weideman will play. Said last week after watching Jetta play at Casey that he was far from ready.. who knows if he should play next week. No use playing Lewis (not his fault but he should have not been reselected once the season was done.) JKH.. why but then again why not.. give Gus a rest perhaps

POSTGAME: Rd17 vs Bulldogs
as the song says... always look on the bright side... they were nearly at full strength and beat Geelong a few weeks back whereas we had ?? out and we nearly won. Big positive in Petty and we got a game into Preuss. 2020 wise it was better than the win last week.

Round 17 Non MFC Games
Tassie looks warmer as each week passes... (and it stuffs the Hawks)

Round 18 - Dees v WC in Alice Springs
we all know that NT is not a strategically sound move ....sure others play in cairns, Tasmania and even Ballarat but NT makes no sense. Hell I'd prefer the stupidity of one game a year in China.. and boy that is stupid

you're right but it would be fun making an open play for him and seeing the bomber fans sweat. As I mentioned before at the very least it would play a little havoc with their salary cap.

Membership Survey
Interesting albeit dated puff piece by a mob that did some analysis on Richmond's membership https://home.id.com.au/case-studies/richmond-football-club/ "We started by mapping the location of current and past Richmond members. It showed a clear spatial pattern with membership strongest in Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs, fanning out from the club’s heartland in Richmond (the red areas on the map below). Then the demography comes in. We know that when the children of current Richmond supporters grow up and leave home, we can predict with some confidence where they will move to. In Melbourne there is a clear northwest and southeast divide. People that grew up in the southeast have a strong tendency to move further southeast to a suburb they can afford when they buy their family home. Demographers call this outward sectoral migration. You can clearly see people who live in Richmond strongholds fanning out across the east and southeastern suburbs (the yellow arrows on the map below)."

Round 18 - Dees v WC in Alice Springs
Interesting from the ticketing site... I thought we had renewed for 2-3 years at least "This year will be Melbourne’s tenth consecutive year of playing home games in the NT, and it’s with thanks to the Northern Territory Government (NTG) and AFL, who have worked hard with AFLNT and Melbourne FC to sign a one-year agreement covering 2019. Melbourne has had a strong presence in the region over the years, supporting several Northern Territory-based initiatives, such as the education of Indigenous eye health and trachoma disease." The ticketing site says you can bring an esky so the cheese board is possible !!

may as well give the Bombers a little salary cap problem by making an offer. Garlett's money is there to be used.
