WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BEN BROWN
Lucifers Hero replied to Dee tention's topic in Melbourne Demons
Thanks. I tried to stay away from rumours as I felt facts would be more convincing to cover 'Sydees'' concerns. re the rumours you mention. Good on him for putting his family first. If I was his wife and went thru what she did I wouldn't be too happy with the club either. -

This has come up in a number of your posts so I'll give you a view: The things we know: He turned down North's contract offer which they subsequently withdrew due to covid and sal cap reductions. North messed Brown around at the time of creating the hubs (some of it not their doing). North were insensitive to his wife's miscarriage. North are in a bit of a mess He has seen a number of his mates and club staff unceremoniously dumped. The people who withdrew his offer and (mis) managed the hub are still at North. North may have initiated the split (and could now be regretting it) but given the above why would he want to stay. I have seen or heard nothing that supports your idea that he is NQR. But lets assume he is carrying a lingering injury. I have full confidence that our medical team has done their due diligence and will get him right if necessary. -
They want him to ask for a trade. Then they can 'sell it to members' and the public as his choice and take the moral high ground. But Treloar isn't playing their game. On the public front Matt Randell (ex but recent Recruiting Manager) outed the meeting of Buckley and Treloar where he was told Coll 'don't want him'. Eddy hasn't denied that meeting and has been remarkably silent, which speaks volumes. Probably in damage control. Coll is rapidly losing control of the narrative and it is getting horribly messy. Treloar is showing great courage to take on the Coll establishment. I just hope he comes out of this ok on the personal front.

The people who made the decision to cancel the early contract offer and to oust him from the club are still there. No way would he stay. -
Higgins had major brain surgery in 2019. Great credit to him to come back and play 13 games in 2020. But those games weren't at the level of 2018/2019. Understandable given the time out of the game and lack of a VFL comp. His goal scoring isn't high about 20 p.a so while he is a live wire with pressure he doesn't do a lot of damage for a small fwd. It looks like he is surplus but he was a first round pick 3 years ago and a premiership player. A club would have to be very sure things like touch, vision, reaction time etc are still 100%. Don't like mentioning that but it is important to go into trades with eyes wide open.

Feel for the guy. Very loyal. Reportedly helped the club with sal cap in recent years by agreeing to re-time his contract to the back end and now that they have to pay up they want him out. The kid has/had self declared mental health issues. Very callous of Coll if they don't consider that. If he has to go fine but it behoves them to ensure the way they handle the exit they don't do more damage.

Maybe but good sportsmanship nonetheless.

It seems Rich players deliberately did not attack Ablett's shoulder when he came back on. Also when they formed the guard of honour for him to walk through each and every player removed their premiership medals. Respect appropriately shown on and off the field. Don't like Rich but credit where credit is due.

The 'Rumour' thread a reference to 5 years - bit long imv given his age and unless there were conditions re injury or other triggers. -
5 years to Ben Brown would be a surprise. Makes him 33 at the end of his contract. Hopefully there would be triggers for last year or two.

Why are umpires wearing yellow shirts and black shorts with Richmond playing...? Terrible.

Love anyone who wears the red and blue ?? -
Re the bolded part. The good guys? Not if we play them out of position or select then omit them until they get so frustrated they ask to move. There are some on the trade table that fall into this category. Hopefully, it doesn't happen to Brayshaw, Harmes and a couple of others who looked 'out of favour' this year. It could be better for the culture to cut the 'out of favour' ones lose. Less potential for disruption among their mates and other players.

Sydney have a different game plan to us. More man-on-man and less zone. Longmire tends to use his sweepers to get the ball out of d50 rather than rely on the talls to get it out. So TMac's kicking wouldn't be such an issue.
-
Can see the attraction for the Swans. Port seem very interested in Alir Alir and TMac has the flexibility to play his role: back, fwd, relief ruck.
-
Looks like Beams will retire and strike a deal with Collingwood on the remaining two years of his contract. That should free up some decent sal cap space for: Pay DeGoey? Keep Treloar? Trade someone else in?

Free agency - the rich (clubs) get richer

Surely this can't be allowed re Crouch: "Crows appear happy to allow him to walk - as long as they get a good enough draft pick, which will be based on the size of the deal Crouch signs at his new home. The mooted deal would see Adelaide trade for Jimmy Webster and Luke Dunstan, in exchange for “steak knife” late draft picks, to take on their salaries and free up space at St Kilda. The Saints in turn would pay Crouch slightly more money, ensuring Adelaide receives a first-round pick in compensation - which would be Pick 2 - rather than Pick 20 or worse if the compo fell to the end of the first round". brad-crouch-st-kilda-adelaide Isn't that blatant draft tampering? -
Excellent posts! Very articulate. Are you sure you are a film maker and not an economist in disguise ?

Given what was to come he probably is better off out of North albeit on less $$. -
Rhyce Shaw takes extended break
Lucifers Hero replied to La Dee-vina Comedia's topic in Melbourne Demons
Yet, by all accounts the Board and senior management didn't do much to help him at the hub. They left him and a first year GM Football (Brady Rawlings) without a lot of support. Shaw's post game press conf were heartbreaking to watch. When he said things like "I am at a loss..." it was imv, a cry for help. Help that didn't come or came too late. For a variety of reasons, Shaw had one of the toughest coaching jobs this year. Hopefully he gets well soon. -
I don't know but I'm sure there is some there thru his sub committee. Whether it extends to football and non financial stufff only insiders would know.
-
Rather cryptic, no?
-
Yeah, I haven't heard much about our governance protocols over football matters either. Which makes me wonder whether we have them or they are inadequate and maybe Brad's role is to look at 'best practice' and implement and or update what we have. fwiw I include 'risk' in governance as risk can occur in any part of the club. Good governance and protocols are there to reduce risk. I hope our football governance is up there or becomes like the standards the best clubs set. Agreed there is a line that the board member shouldn't cross and from the outside it looks like it has been crossed at North and Adelaide, to their detriment.
-
The best thing the 'football' Board member can do is stay out of football decisions or day to day stuff. Look at the mess at North from their football director calling the shots and to a lesser extent Roo at the Crows. Strategy, governance, protocols, review and re-set protocols/strategy is the cycle of the board/sub committee role. Otherwise they have the wrong staff running the show.

Its been all too obvious this year and has cost us games. After 4 years do you see Goodwin developing a plan?
