WOW! Mahoney misses out on CEO job (to Pert) and now is demoted by Pert to a far lesser job to report to his previous underling (Richardson). That would be brutal by Pert. If that happens it smacks more of politics at the top than sensible organisation re-structure. If the Richo reports to Green (or any individual board member) we have the reporting and accountability all wrong. I would be very worried by Green's appt to the Board if his role becomes managerial.

Geelong's version of 'brown paper bags' at it again! Glad we didn't keep throwing more money at him.
-
I don't know whether @Dr evilis right or wrong. But didn't we do a last minute diversion with Mitch Clarke who was about to fly to WA to sign up with Freo and came to MFC. Things change. Until all signatures are on the dotted line it hasn't happened. For mine it is no biggie. Let him go to Geelong. Especially if he comes to us only for the money. I want people who will give all for the jumper.

I don't know.

I don't know what happens if they weren't told by end of August re extra payment. Re your last sentence. It scares the living daylights out of me if we are holding onto all our assistant coaches. Some have to go. I'd be very surprised if they don't know who they are. As far as I can tell, only GCS, Freo and Hawks have announced significant changes to coaching panel. The rest are yet to come so its all very quiet.
-
Correct, re August on advice on employment which would be kept quiet and out of the media. But iirc the contracts expire end of October so one would think the club would issue a statement thanking those that are going. Of course it could all be held up while Pert finishes the review. But I would hope we hear soon.
-
Why? I took it as ours is probably a bit higher than others and/or there are some sweetners in our deal eg a better spread across the contract years, extra amounts if he exceeds certain number of games etc etc.
-
I would still back Geelong's chances of winning a flag as being higher than ours during Smith's remaining playing years which are probably 2021/22. In his 3rd contract year with us, 2023 he may no longer be best 22.
-
Thought this was interesting: "All three deals Smith has been weighing up are similar financially, though as mentioned Melbourne’s is one year longer". I'd take the 2 year contract if the $ were similar in total to 3 years and avoid putting in an extra years work. And if a 4th flag is important then Geelong is a much better prospect. By the time we make a GF he may not even be selected or even be at the club. All roads lead to Geelong.

Contracts officially end on Saturday, Oct 31 so we should hear of those departing in the next day or two (even if we don't hear who the replacements are).
-
I take the age at the EOC ie Oct. Too hard to track birth dates. Hunt to Ess. Nooo! I'm hanging out to hear he has a new contract.

Hawks going with a very slimmed down coaching panel: Hawthorn has finalised its 2021 coaching structure, with club great Sam Mitchell to become head of development, while Chris Newman, Brendon Bolton and Craig McRae will be assistants under senior coach Alastair Clarkson. As part of the role, Mitchell will also be the senior coach of VFL affiliate Box Hill.
-
Hawthorn have made their VFL coach part-time giving it to Sam Mitchell who will also be their Development Coach. Good experience for Sam coaching his own team before succeeding Clarkson.

Hore signed for 1 year. Spargo signed for 2 years. A very long list building for OOC players in 2021. Good strategy in case there are large reductions in player numbers next year.
-
Delighted about this. Marty was great for us last year when all around him were injured. Will be good depth. Charlie had a really good 2018 when iirc he played all 3 finals. Not much chance for a consistent run of games this year. So should be better next year. He teamed up well with Kozzie on the few occasions they played together.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - BEN BROWN
Lucifers Hero replied to Dee tention's topic in Melbourne Demons
We might try but I doubt he will sign for more than 2 years ie to when he reaches FA. The norm with player manager's is to have the best players contract only to year 8, their FA year. -
What! Split Mahoney's job in two and create another football GM and add more 'overhead' at a time when the soft cap is being cut by ~ 30%. Doubt it.
-
Correct on all counts.
-
'Footy Manager'. I wonder if he means the Josh Mahoney role of General Manager - Football and Casey Operations or the Daniel Mcpherson role of Manager - Football Operations and AFLW, who reports to Mahoney. Or even the Peter Maynard role General Manager - Casey Football. And there is the role of Garry O'Sullivan of Casey Football Manager Looks like a fair bit of overlap there. Would expect some rationalisation of the non-player side of FD positions to meet the FD soft cap.

Kozzie updated: Updated for Hibberd and Jones one year extensions. Have also added Draft Picks to the chart.
-
This threads looks a good place to put this: trade news Why clubs will look to hold onto future picks "AFL.com.au has spoken to a number of clubs and player managers recently, who have all predicted a significant reduction in the number of future picks that will be traded over the coming weeks...It will subsequently mean that more draft hopefuls will miss their chance later this year and will become eligible to return to talent pathway programs next season, adding to an already strong 2021 NAB AFL Draft crop that has recruiters excited for what's to come." We know this years draft is compromised in so many ways which in itself is reason enough to keep future picks. That 2021 is considered a strong draft and those that miss out this year will be in the draft next year, is another reason for clubs to keep future picks.

Sam McClure is suggesting Coll want Treloar out because they think he won't cope well with his family interstate: “...I remember if it wasn’t for my partner Kimmy, for Nick Maxwell, Bucks, Jacqui [Louder] who is my psych/really, really good friend and my family, I probably wouldn’t be playing footy, to be honest with you... ...While Treloar is adamant that living away from his partner and daughter won’t impact on his football, the Collingwood hierarchy disagrees". adam-treloar-stuck-in-the-middle A google search connects his psych, Jacqui Lounder to Collingwood. Fair to assume the club has inside knowledge so have an extra 'duty of care' in how they deal with him. It might be a good idea for Eddie to talk to lawyers on extent of their 'duty of care'. Also, I have some problem with the ethics of Coll offloading him for potential psychological reasons which may or may not affect football performance.

I think @xman97 means is what happened to Freo this year: *Fremantle's first pick was adjusted due to a 264.9 deficit from 2019 indicative-draft-order Their natural pick should be #7 but has slipped to #10. It is a loophole as a club can trade out its future 1st round pick eg for a top player in the draft and use 'rubbish picks for their academy/FS and go into deficit where the points come out of next years first 'natural' pick. GWS and Port last year traded out their 2020 first rnd pick so the deficit comes out of the 2020 2nd round pick, as follow (from the article) : '*Greater Western Sydney's second pick was adjusted due to a 254.2 deficit from 2019. *Port Adelaide's second pick was adjusted due to a 115.9 deficit from 2019. The loophole should be closed to stop clubs trading out their top picks then using rubbish picks for academy/FS whether or not they go into deficit. North did it a few years ago. Guarantee the dogs will do it this year for a kid who will probably go #1.

Jesse Hogan on the way out at Freo?
Lucifers Hero replied to Bizzell Blitz's topic in Melbourne Demons
He was ready to play a long time before he got a game this year. I read a report saying Freo didn't play him so that he would not reach the trigger points in 2021 to extend his contract on bigger $ into 2022 and beyond. Once they changed coaches Longmuir didn't have the same ownership of the Jesse decision that Lyon had. Maybe as a young coach he isn't in a position to put in the time and energy needed to get the best from Jesse. Maybe at the 'right' club he can deliver more than he has in recent years. Richmond or Sydney could be that club. -
They messed up by giving Beams a LT offer which he still has two years on and doesn't play. They have offered Grundy a 7yr deal on (reportedly) around $1m a year (which doesn't start until next year). And who knows what other LT deals they have. It looks like they expected the sal cap to increase forever and it would 'rescue' them. Well covid snookered that plan. With the Treloar deal they have virtually made him untradeable as it is unlikely anyone will take on his hefty contract for 5 years when he may not be fit enough to see it out. Yes, the TMac contract is small fry $ and years in comparison. And credit to the club and Tom that all parties are being very dignified about it.
