While not disagreeing with the gist of your post Stuie, the stat comparison you supplied us (very useful btw) shows Cross played only 13 games this year, so its probably not fair to compare with Jones who played almost every game.

I have always thought that 99% of footballers want a clearly defined role which they will play week in, week out. Loose man down back, then lead up fwd, then running high half fwd, then a spell in the middle - these only confuse a guy.
