  1. Wonder how Max and Brodie are feeling that the opposition ruck got 7 coaches votes? Hopefully fired up
  2. Woewodin is such a brilliant Melbourne name. I hope he goes on and plays 300 games for us

Easily our strongest line and the most miserly in the comp having conceded a smidge over 18 points a game. We have the best small defender in Shelley Heath who kept Courtney Hodder, one of the best small forwards, to just 2 kicks (0 points) in the Grand Final. We also have the best young. developing tall, Tahlia Gillard, who held the competitions highest goal scorer scoreless in the same game. A dream pick at draft #42 Tahlia has a 15/1 winning record Add Birch, Goldie, Gay, Chaplin, Lampard et al and you are going to win a lot more games than you’ll lose. Strengths 2 We have amazing flexibility within the team. Zanker, Harris, Hore, Gay, Bannon, Lampard, Fitzsimmons, Paxman and Heath can all play multiple positions across the ground. Strength 3 This is what separates us, Brisbane and Adelaide from everyone else - depth. Every team has good players. In fact our top end talent possibly isn’t as good as some others but no one is going to match our bottom dozen players. Strength 4 I’ll be honest, the first time I heard the words Demon Spirit uttered I thought they were wankie leadership course buzzwords that had been enthusiastically co-opted by the marketing department. How wrong was I. It was endlessly talked about in every interview with the girls. They believed that not only every woman in the side, but every woman on that list had buy in with the group. From the outside looking in it looked like they had total belief in one another. And in a sign of how deep that shared sense of belonging and loyalty was, the Demon Spirit award was won by Rhi Watt, who was injured and didn’t play a single minute of game time. Weakness 1 Our forward line could do with a quick and skilful quality goal sneak. Perhaps Aimee Mackin has been recruited for this role? Weakness 2 Our first choice mids are all between 157-162 (5’2”-5’4” in the old) and whilst that didn’t hurt us last year it would be great if we could develop a couple of bigger body mids Opportunities 1 Our flag side featured four players 19-21yo and ten in the all important 22-26yo bracket - in other words there is still room for significant improvement Opportunity 2 There was no proper draft at the end of last season. For the first and last time that will mean the the other teams don’t have the chance to bring in new, young talent. There is bit of a status quo about the lists To counter this the AFL (in their infinite wisdom) and to even the talent pool across the league, let the weaker raid the stronger clubs. Brisbane, in particular, have been weakened but so have Adelaide who are both our major competitors. In a testament to the unity and Demon Spirit of this list we did not lose a player to another club. If anything this has left us relatively stronger which was probably not what the AFL had in mind. Smiley face here Threat 1 Post Daisy. We will probably only know about half way through the season how significant of a loss her absence is. Let’s face it she is irreplaceable Threat 2 Post flag. Will complacency creep in? Summary We will start the season as deserved flag favourites. We are brilliantly coached, have a deep and talented list and a united club. Other clubs will rise to challenge us - North? Bulldogs? - and there are so many variables, both known and unknown, that it is impossible to be overly confident At the very least we can all be pretty bloody excited by the upcoming season. I am!! Go Demons!!
  4. With the wet weather having a fresh Spargo to come in could be a big advantage
  5. Don’t think MANY criticised the decision to drop Tomlinson, just that he was stiff. He played particularly well last week and is unlucky to miss this week although you may disagree. I think MOST here are can understand the horses for courses/wet weather/match up logic but still can feel some sympathy for him
  6. Mini rant coming up Yesterday the AFL announced the dates for next years SA Gather Round. This is at a time when the AFLW season is yet to be finalised, even though the players are in pre-season training and the first game is slated to start in just over two months. Imagine being an AFLW player who has a second job but you can’t tell your employee what days you’ll need off (no fixture) or how many (no fixture length). They also don’t know how much they’ll be paid let alone the type of finals system they’ll be playing under After not even having a ground booked for the Grand Final last season you’d think the AFL may have been shamed into getting their [censored] together but unfortunately no. There is now even talk of a players strike if this isn’t sorted soon https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-06-10/lack-progress-expanded-schedule-threat-aflw-strike/102465960 and you can understand the frustration Pull your finger out AFL and treat the comp and these women with the respect they deserve
  7. Oh wow! That’s a serious leap he has on him
  8. FWIW Cal Twomey said the other day that the Demons were keen to keep James Jordon. Given we are a professional, well run club these days and he probably doesn’t want to leave, but is just looking for more playing opportunities I’d be surprised if he left.
  9. I know what you mean, but if Green comes to the club over Tyson then the sliding doors thing means we probably don’t get Oliver and Petracca in future years. Did we actually have the chance to get Green anyway?
  10. We get 3 ten* day breaks in a row. Other clubs get a longer single break than we do but we have longer breaks than them either side of the bye. Surely the Club can design a program that will maximise these 3 long breaks. Who knows, if we are smart it could be an advantage * or nine depending on your outlook
  11. That’s ok, I don’t know what All duck, no dinner means or why it annoyed Collingwood
  12. I was, and still are, Robbie’s biggest fan. But even I forget how good he was. Before you are allowed to join Demonland you should have to watch the collection of Flower videos. It should also be remembered that most of his best highlights were never captured as he played in a team that rarely featured in replays. Still the best Melbourne player I have seen
  13. Sadly for Rhys-Jones he will be primarily remembered by the footy public as a thug. Having been in front of the judiciary 25 times in his career, he is the most reported player player in history. He would just snap. However he was also supremely talented; quick, agile and skilful. He kept Brereton goalless in the ‘87 Grand Final and won the Norm Smith.
  14. JVR has bit of the early years Petracca strut about him. Love it! Also love that he is wearing the #2. Will do it proud
  15. Before everyone goes Tomlinson there is nothing he can do when the ball comes in lace out. I thought he was ok ish
  16. They both scream cult figure. Watching Casey games Sestan has the ability to do the extraordinary. It may not happen every quarter but it is fun to watch when it does. Someone here also stated that he is already the best kick in the team. Verrall is big, mobile, coordinated and can kick. This observation is on the one game I watched of him but pretty much anyone could have seen the kid has talent.
  17. HTF Salem walked straight into the senior side without finding form at Casey has me stumped. He is timid and has zero hurt factor
  18. We were beaten by the better side on the day
  19. We could actually win the whole bloody thing this year, while Taylor sets us up for the next decade with picks 4, 18 and 22. Get excited Sue.
  20. To be fair most players get sacked. Very few get to leave on their own terms.
  21. That is unbelievable! Unique. I have never seen a goal like that in 50 odd years of watching footy
  22. That’s brilliant! Such a mum thing to do
  23. The last two decades of #1 draft picks from 2002 are Goddard Cooney Delidio Murphey Gibbs Kruezer Watts Scully Swallow Patton Whitfield Boyd McCartin Weitering McGrath Raynor Walsh Rowell Ugle-Hagen Horne-Francis and Cadman If you redrafted these drafts now bugger all of the #1 picks would go #1 again. Who knows, perhaps Harley Reid is different, but I’d rather back Taylor to pick his 3 best in the top 25 rather than just the one shiny bloke who is currently at the top
  24. Melbourne V Richmond luck scoreboard. Umpires had a shocker - Demons 0 Tigers 2 Richmond were without their key forward and one of the pre-season Coleman favourites in Tom Lynch. Their first ruck in Nankervis, second ruck in Soldo. Also Nathan Broad, a 3 time premiership player, Jack Graham 2 time premiered player and 2nd in the Tigers B & F and up and coming Key defender in Josh Gibcus. We were close to full strength - Demons 5 Tigers 0 We can’t whinge as overall we won the luck scoreboard 5-2.
