  1. Mods can you please warn tge usual supects about the very tiresome endless arguments. One in particular. The same point made more than twice veers into troll territory as it is simply is designed to wind people up.
  2. Hopefully Trump will be like me and my various passwords, in so far as he can't remember the nuclear codes. Forgotten your nuclear code? Please click here and we will send you an email to reset the code.
  3. And us to him. Another example of brilliant people management since PJ has come on board. He wanted to play on. Was certainly fit enough to. But unfortunately he would have taken games away from young players. His retirement was managed in a way that was not only respectful but provided us the opportunity to keep him engaged at the club in a way that we get much of same benefit as if he had continued playing, primarily as a brilliant role model and mentor for the younger players. His role at the club also aligns with what he said he was interested in pursuing career wise post footy - sports science, fitness and conditioning. He gets to learn under Misson and build his career. And we get to keep him at the club. A win win. Not to bang on about the past but the contrast to how the retirement of J mac was handled could not be more stark. Just on PJ, he is held in such high regard at the club that it has created a clothing range in his honor, surely the first footy boss to be honored in such a way: Zoom Mens Checkard PJ Pant $30.00 Members: $27.00
  4. And despite the fact that Oliver almost died, all through his break, from a malicious strain of hay fever. Poor love. Not the sharpest tool in the shed and when someone told him hay fever could be treated by copious amounts of beer and getting blind at sketchy clubs he believed them.
  5. Roos cleary prefered vb as a forward. Strong body. Good mark and reliable shot for goal. Where he plays will depend on where goody sees him as a best fit
  6. Well tiers, to avoid tears, lets agree to disagree
  7. Good post. We definetley have the makings of a super strong forward line and i think we can look forward to watching a high scoring team for the next few years. Will be some good value in the first few rounds next season for the highest score of the round . The casey demons will also have a pretty good forward line as they wont be able to squueze them all in. By the by you left out one of our most damaging forwards in the trac. I suspect that whilst he will inevitably spend more time in the midfield he will always play a a lot as a very dangerous high half forward.
  8. That might have been how a tall forward played in 1979. Not now. All roam up the ground and play super mobile. Think nick reiwoldt. Even hogan played up the ground alot. And there are suggestions he will do even more of that next year. All modern teams have both their talls play high and often as a link man. It creates space for the over the back goal rhat is a hallmark of footy atm. This strategy is why traditional stay at home forwards like hawkins and cloke are struggling. It is also why tall forwards have to now be aerobic beasts. Hogan and watts came 1st and 2nd in our goal kicking this year. Why? Because they were our two tall forwards. As for watts playing down back, again even hogan found himself down there at times but rather than liscence to go there the general strategy is for watts to play a loose man down back for the last 3-4 minutes of almost every quarter. A very clever and effective strategy given how cool under pressure he is.
  9. Sorry but this is plain wrong. He most definitely was the second tall.
  10. The most impressive example was that pest Rioli nailing a set shot from way outside 50 to beat the Swans at the SCG. The little bugger can do it all.
  11. Well yes that's the ideal as accuracy goes down in direct relation to distance from goal. But none the less players do end up having to take shots from the 50 metre arc. And everyone loves a bomb from outside 50!
  12. Yep fair points. I absolutely agree that any suggestion of a major issue was/is silly and also agree confidence was a big factor. Technique played a part also, and i don't think it was necessarily only the stutter as he seemed to develop a more pronounced arc when kicking from distance. I reckon in hindsight he would have been better off not responding to the comments from Shwarz as it was a bit of a distraction. The minor tweaks you have noted will be more than enough i reckon to resolve what as you say is not really a major issue. I love how Lynch and his offsider two meter peter can bomb long. It makes them both super dangerous. If Hogan can start dobbing them from outside 50 it will make him even more of a weapon, particularly because he he is so hard to stop marking on those long leads which end out around the 50 metre mark. Exciting times.
  13. Saty at the risk of derailing a perfectly good thread and against my better instincts (as i'm aware you have put it out there to see if you get a bite) but whilst Hogan many be able to kick them from anywhere at training it is no myth that from set shots (though not in field kicking, which suggests a technical issue) he has struggled in matches from anywhere beyond 45-50 metres to consistently get the distance and when he does get the distance he often misses striving for that extra distance. I expect that he won't have this issue if his run up is smoother and he has improved his routine.
  14. Agree with all of the above. Was just fishing for another bet. That's really interesting comment about his listening skills and for some reason it doesn't surprise me. I think he is someone who has taken time to mature. The way he talks about Roos, Macc and Goodwin suggest they are three men who have found a way to connect. Which is what good coaching is all bout after all. I think if he puts 2 more seasons together like last year he will be on the AA selector's radar, but that's a big if. He was actually really consistent lat year but the best players put seasons together. By all accounts he has come back super fit and ready to go so that is a very good sign The thing Watts will have in his favor next years is opposition defences will be very stretched trying to cover Hogan and Trac and will need a tall player to cover Watts, but also a player who has the endurance to follow him up the ground and the agility to beat him when the ball is on the carpet up forward.
  15. Well played PD. I was wondering how soon past the six month mark you'd dump the avatar. Do you think JW is a chance of making AA? I have not seen DJ at all but i have to say i share your thoughts on the other players mentioned, particularly Trac and Hogan. Trac will be an incredibly hard half forward to cover as he is strong in the air and the ground. He reminds me of Jarman in that respect. I hope he is a bit more selfish this year and goes for goal when he has the chance rather than looking for the give. Needs to improve his accuracy though. Hogan will, as you say will, start dominating games and the competition. I have never been more confident of saying that about a MFC player, and that includes Shwarz (who was mercurial as a young player but could go missing at times, as all young players can).
  16. An excellent point time re hanballs. There should be no argument about the need to be able to use both hands equally well.
  17. Im not a big soccer fan but from the little i know a player who cant move naturally from left foot to right foot (not kicking on goals only but passing and controlling the ball) willl never make it to the top flight. Never. The same is true in basketball, though of course they only do lay ups with the np. A key difference i supect is that afl players need to be much fitter than top flight soccer players so have much less time available to commit to skills. Not sure about basketball but the nba players play so many games that i doubt tbey can physically do as much in season physical training and so probably do mainly skills and run plays between games
  18. From the site i linked above an fascinating excerpt from a book from a surprising author. the xcerpt is about the demons of 1965 (though the book is not about the dees). here is a very prescient quote from the excerpt : 'In spite of Smithy’s great record they’ll give him the La Fontaine treatment as soon as he shows signs of going soft and they have been grooming Noel McMahen for emergencies and protege Ron Barassi is another with his eyes on a coaching future. Still, I wonder if Barassi is Melbourne material. He is outspoken and impulsive and not the diplomat that fiery Norm is and I think Melbourne officials want a diplomat.' Can you guess the author?
  19. In looking around about the Redlegs i stumbled on this brilliant website. Worth a look if you a footy history fan: http://australianfootball.com/
