They are worse than us on player and umpire criticism. Gee they were having a great big cry. BUT there were many favourable comments about the mighty Dees. ( What a fantastic performance). Here are few samples of praise from the opposition. "Well done Dees you looked fantastic," "Melbourne will be scary in 2-3 years." ......."As a footy fan tho it was great to see how good Melbourne could become."..... One poster wrote, " We can come back from this. It was a poor loss but it won't happen again this year." The reply was. "True. We don't play Melbourne again until next year."...... Another wrote, " It was nice to see Jim Stynes relaxing and just soaking up the success of his team. The Dees have some amazing talent on their list. I reckon Watts will be very good when he gets it together. I also reckon Bailey is a great coach( and a great guy). Another comment was.' The Demons would have troubled every single team in the competition and trounced all but the top handful." Yes, among all the whingers there were some very fair comments made about our effort today.

Agree 100%. Today he attacked the footy and showed that he has caught up with AFL tempo and pressure. Dropped an easy mark 55m out in the last Q but everyone is allowed to make mistakes. To his unfair critics on this forum. Give the kid a break and remember his limited experience. BTW, compare Jack's stats over the past 6 weeks with Nic Nat. I think you will be pleasantly surprised. I was really pleased with the whole team's resolve after quarter time and we didn't hear the "Heave Ho " from Dockers fans until the last 2 mins. I'm sure we are gaining much respect. I heard one Docker fan say to his mate on the way out," My heart was in my mouth when Watts was shooting for goal near the end." The third quarter was a beauty and interestingly, we kicked 6.3 to the Dockers 1.2. Exactly the same scores as the first quarter but in reverse. Funny game footy.

Yes, it was a great night. The players were happy to mingle and do autographs etc. One guy paid $1900 to sit on the coaching bench next to Chris Connolly for the Freo game. A keen Demon supporter and very rich no doubt. They tried to auction Ron Barassi's jumper but it was passed in at $ 1000. Shane Woewoden was there with his young son ( In Demons colours). Father /Son rule one day? Woey's jumper was passed in at auction at $850. A few of the players I spoke to reckoned that a win over Freo was on the cards. Guess we will have to wait and see. Bailey spoke forcefully and succinctly about our future hinting that our appearance near the top was getting closer and closer. Said it was a great honour to be associated with a great club like Melbourne. He didn't really answer the question about Junior playing next year but said that he was a terrific leader at the club. He also implied that Gold Coast would have to battle hard to pinch any of our players. Also that other clubs were going to make things difficult for the fledgling side. The way he spoke made one realise how he got the coaching job over others. BTW the Western Demons award for our best player V the Weagles was won by Mr Moloney. Gee, he looked as tough as a mallee bull. Ken Melville and Trevor Johnson from the mighty '50's were there.

Spot on 'Watts04". The way some people talk you would think it was the ONLY good game he has played this year! They are very wrong and not good judges of a footballer's ability. BTW I reckon your man Watts is coming along very nicely indeed. I am often amazed at the criticism levelled at the kid. I think they want him to be as good as Reiwoldt already. Give him some time.

Yes, Stuart Spencer(1950's) had a magnificent left foot kick. Long, raking and accurate. He knew where the goals were too. Brad and Aaron are up there too.

Thanks Jonesy. I didn't think it was possible.

Living in far too distant Perth I decided to look at the current VFL ladder on the net. Naturally I was interested in where Casey stood. The first 3 teams listed were Williamstown 9-2 152.94 36 pts, North Ballarat 9-2 152.94 36 pts and Casey 9-2 152.94 36 pts. The first 3 teams dead level on % and points. If this ladder was correct it would have to be an amazing occurrence. Could one of you kind Melbournians advise me as to whether this was a fact or not. Thanks.

Strangely, we have a much better record at Subi than Adelaide. I just can't explain why we have so much trouble in even being competitive at AAMI stadium. Now don't get me wrong, I didn't say we have a GOOD record at Subi.

A mate of mine who is also a PE teacher suggested this possible rule change to rid footy of what he describes as its present 'malaise'.( Constant, ugly packs being formed) 'PLAYER 1 IS FAIRLY TACKLED BY PLAYER 2 AND THEY BOTH GO TO GROUND. If a THIRD player jumps in forming a pack HE is IMMEDIATELY PENALISED with a free kick awarded against him'. Wouldn't this keep the game moving with a simple one on one situation? Less ball ups and no dicey holding the ball situations. I think it has merit. What do you think?

All we need is a guy who can kick ACCURATELY over a distance of 190 metres! Imagine, every time the opposition kicked a behind, we would respond with a GOAL! We would have kicked no fewer than 32 goals on Monday if this bloke had played. Is a man with a bionic leg allowed to play? What a recruit he would be. One can always dream can't they? Great effort Dees. Go Dees Go!!!!!
-
Absolutely horrible kicking style for goal BUT the ball always seemed to wobble through much to the disgust of opposition supporters!!! Would run onto his left foot every time but never seemed to ever get caught.

I was upset too Barrie, but then I realised I was too early for the prof having retired in 1955. I made the Demons team of the Century brought out by the Age but missed out on the MFC Official team. You and Geoff Tunbridge were great exponents of Half forward flank play. ( Often known as the graveyard of football).

Good spotting Pitmaster. It must have been 1953 when Barass had his teething problems as that was his first year at Melbourne. He was an established star by 1955.

Give the boy time to develop. Let me tell you a little story of one Ronald Dale Barassi. In 1953 he was playing good footy in the 2nds and was promoted as full forward in our developing seniors team. He was an absolute flop as he flew for 'screamers' without getting near the ball. In fact, he found it so hard to get the pill he was dropped back to the seconds. Again, at full forward in the twos, he kicked a bag and was promptly reinstated to the firsts. Same story. Completely out of his depth or so it seemed. He was dropped back to twos where he played in a 'new' position of 'ruck rover'. He did very well and was given yet another chance.( Was it because his father was a famous Melbourne player we thought?) Boy, oh boy, did he take it!!!!! As a ruck rover in the firsts he was a sensation and never saw the twos ever again. This is a true story folks. I was there at the 'G' to witness the beginning of this great man's career. ( pleased to say I was only 14 at the time but I remember it vividly.) Now, the playing styles of Jack and Ron are completely different but in my humble opinion, true, natural ability will eventually shine through. Maybe Jack does need more time at Casey but I have a lot of faith after watching him play against Port up there in Darwin. Let us help him by not coming down on him like a ton of bricks when he has a quiet day.

Have you ever thought the boundary line is a safer option in defence?( Ask John Beckwith that one. You probably don't know who he is, but never mind, you are only young and inexperienced in knowing what it takes to be a successful footballer}. No use keeping it in play and getting pinged. Bruce's playing days are far from over. That's for sure.

Stay with it Joeboy. You are showing a little bit of humour to lighten up the starchy posters on the forum. Funny, not in the least embarrassing. I live in Perth and love calling the Eagles 'wet toast'. Can't see anything childish about that. Keep on with your 3 word analysis. Whether one agrees with all of your thoughts doesn't matter. It's your view and makes interesting reading.

Peter James was actually talking about Bate not Bruce!!!!
