I got a call from Tom in the shop yesterday. poor fellow sounded very stressed. He came up with a solution which means something will be under the tree and offered profuse apologies. I think they are doing their best in a difficult situation outside their control. No doubt these things are made in China or somewhere so its not straight forward. I dont think as a rule will see a ruck resting on the bench but rather in a position on field. We will see more inventive solutions with Ruck/Forwards or Ruck/Backs. For example why wouldn't you play 2 big men, one who can fill a forward position and another who can fill a back position each being given responsiblity for either end of the ground to spread the load. No need to bench them. I can see some really interesting tactics developing here that will cause grief to other sides especially if the ruck men are changing in different positions.

SHOW ME THE MONEY This article hits the nail on the head. The AFL has given too many concessions. GWS is not going to be pretty for the AFL which has in my view deeply misunderstood what it is getting into in Sydney. Having lived in Sydney for quite a while now the one thing you learn is that it is a deeply tribal place and the West is the heartland of League. It will be a deep and bottomless pit into which the AFL will drop money whilst doing sighnificant damage to both the Swans and traditional clubs elsewhere. Even if I am wrong about that, where is the justice for us or any other club in the same situation where the value of a draft pick can be extinguished before a club can get back up the ladder?

I actually believe the FD know what they are doing including weighing that every selection has risk be it at number one or not. Personally I dont see much downside here but one thing is certain its been done so lets look forward to his long and great career at Melbourne. I hope Jack, the club and the supporters do all they can to ensure he is supported, develops and plays in our GF side.

First I wish Cam well he has given us a lot of pleasure over the years. I am sure he did not want to sell the club short on the trade situation and both sides had the belief and good intention to resolve the gap. It strikes me this situation is a lose/lose which has been created by unfortunate cicumstances. The club genuinely appeared to believe it made a better than market offer, it probabaly did. I doubt Cam will do better elsewhere on the dollars. Cam on the other hand seems to have been saying that as a matter of principal the 30+ stance taken by the club is not right (deeply held belief after the James McDonald situation.) and that he has plenty left in the legs. Both are right and at the same time wrong. There will always be exceptions to the rule and whilst I like the club being honest about where it is and wants to be not every 30+ player is a year to year proposition. For example Cam is less likely to break down than James. That said the club is right to say his ability to contribute in year 2 is also not a certainty as the group around him improves. Such conflicts are capable of resolution. For example why not a deal where he is guaranteed a year playing a review at the end of the year with an option on year 2 but if its determined he is not a playing asset he gets a year as coach or mentor at an agreed rate. For mine I dont see ill will on either side.

What I like about this is that there is an air of desperation from the Dawks side and calm composure on ours. Its reflective of the quiet confidence we take into the next fews years. Roughhead must be confused by the attention given to a bloke from the VFL earning way more than he has ever put on the park. The deal made sense for us at the right price but the Dawks? All I say is go figure they are less Hawks more headless chooks.
