Dawn of a new Era - Paul Guerra article 18.10.2025

I am completely unsurprised by the May discussion. He may go off the rails at times but is honest with himself. Wants to compete and will do what it takes for the team. I am very glad is remained at the club as I think he will personally connect with King. He knows it gets hard from here but he seems determined to contribute by setting up our new defence.

		Realistic 23 for 2026

JVR has to be delighted that we have checkers and the extended bench which will allow us to develop Heath. I remain very optimistic he will flourish.

Don't we want the F1 for Humphry next year.

		Grading the Trade Week

Grading is pretty dumb until you see the results but how do you give GWS an A for effectively doing nothing? No competition and we were giving him away. As for St Kilda lets rerate it in about round 8 next year.

		Bailey Humphrey

Unusually saw Nine news tonight and TM segment, no mention of Petracca deal at all which I thought was strange given it was a round up of the deals that have to be done by close.

So do I. Then i liked Frosty except on gameday when he gave me several heart attacks.

Getting heated is a good sign as is the De Goey inclusion. Suggests GC aren't certain on Trac deal working. Trac probably starting to realise Noosa and GC are culturally very different.

I am not speculating on the prospects of a deal. The walk back is fairly simple, he stresses that for personal reasons he needs to be back in Vic at some stage and they after discussion with him accept its in his and the clubs best interests to facilitate that as long as they "do the best deal for their club"

		Farewell Clayton Oliver

Ps: I hope he reflects and thanks those at the club who have gone above and beyond for him.

		Farewell Clayton Oliver

Sad to see him go and have mixed feelings about all of this. GWS may suit him as (and I dont intend to be rude here) its a bit like playing country football. Their ground has that vibe and a small supporter base. AFL is not big out west in sydney, indeed the whole sport scene is very different in Sydney where people have many other priorities. He will be largely anonymous. Collingwood would have been the wrong choice for him.

		Leek Aleer

Very surprising. St Kilda were talking a big game with more money and deals to come but pull the rug on this. I feel for Leek. Its a sobering situation and questions need to be asked of the club. The idea that once you nominate a club then a deal will be done is well and truly under scrutiny now.

Hope Tim has his phone number. I wonder if Clarry told Leek that " I will be playing with you next year"

		Farewell Clayton Oliver

"Wasn't a direction for him to explore his options...." Seems a few people have got ahead of themselves including GWS expectations of what is required for a deal

		Assistant Coaches in 2026

Have banged on about this for some time and I dare to dream we would get someone like Hawk involved. Would be ironic if we moved May forward.

Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver in 2026

If there is nothing in the latest rumour (and it seems to me to be fanciful) then I'd like to see our CEO or coach get on a call to those perpetuating it and tearing strips off them.

Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver in 2026

I dont think our CEO would say Trac wanted to look elsewhere if the meeting went along the lines of "i feel you are pushing me out". In any event it doesn't matter, we have been crystal clear something has to turn our heads to let him go, the whole 50/50 is irrelevant, Trac's manager must know that and its why no club has been nominated, we wont agree to a nominated club only a deal that suits us. However the story came out it doesn't help Trac get a deal done.

Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver in 2026

This could get interesting, it sounds like we will not bend on our requirements (lets hope that is the case). I do not see Trac finding either Adelaide or the Goldie as being places he really wants to live in and this deal will be about his post football future as well the interim. It may dawn on him he is a Melbourne boy but without viable suitors in Melbourne. Do we make a play for one of next years free agents now?

		Cats wobbles

It was extraordinary, his arm was hanging limp. No doubt he wanted to contribute but in the end he was a liability. they would have been better off without him on the field. I think there is no doubt the home ground advantage has played into the Cats finals appearances (and disappearances over the years). I didn't get how all the experts tipped them with such certainty.

		Equalisation

Its a farce. Agents and players do as they please and ignore contracts they agreed to. Big clubs get the best players wanting to move. Scraps for the rest. Like the positive ideas above but the AFL isnt taking it seriously.
