  1. Grundy will likely be a better player than Vlastuin but I think the reason clubs like Richmond and North overlooked him was needs based. No one could've expected him to do so well in year one and even still he doesn't look quite good enough to be the second ruck and forward. It's a bit number 1 or bust when Richmond have Maric, North have Goldstein. Ruck I think is one position that needs based drafting makes sense. Because unless they will be a real steal they'll end up in your 2's for a few years if you've got a good number 1. Brisbane are having that problem now with Longer. The club that inexplicably passed multiple times on Grundy was GWS. Considering they also skipped Longer the year before it's a very strange decision. I wonder (being a bit of a different style unit) if his interview with GWS went particularly poorly
  2. Reminds me of something Clarkson would do. And he seems to be coaching ok. I like that Bassett is his own man and decided to go for the SANFL senior job instead of following other players into assistant jobs and getting lost in the system. Ballsy
  3. Not unreasonable. The other thing for Adelaide to consider is they don't have any top draft picks and Vince is a free agent next year. A decent draft pick in hand is worth gold for them this year and is probably better than the compensation pick they'll get if he leaves next year. If the development of Sloane, Dangerfield, Kerridge, Grigg and Crouch go as expected and a few others then Adelaide will probably be tossing up between Van Berlo (capt), Scott Thompson (signed a new deal) and Vince for game time. Might be best for them to trade him now.
  4. Wow a whole 2 days including a weekend! Calm down. No point getting excited or angry, we will find out either way in due course
  5. That's quite the high offer. But have you seen Crouch play? He's a star. I'm not convinced Aish or Kelly will. Hopefully if either of those guys are at Melbourne they do because with Couch I'm thinking the guy has multiple AA and over 20 brownlow votes on multiple years written all over him.
  6. Not really. Dew moved from stoppages to midfield coach taking Tudor's role. Black can move into Tudor's old role as stoppages coach. They are the kind of successions we would like to make.
  7. Doubtful. Media make a lot of mistakes but they were confident that Dew was the man. It's not like their are any other names out there right now. I'd say we've blown it for this year. Roos now stays for 3 years which impacts the finances but could be well worth it and we have the entire 2014 season to analyse coaching prospects.
  8. Disagree on both points. We bring in the successor late and its Melbournes 8th coach since Daniher left mid way through 2007 (Daniher, Riley, Bailey, Viney, Neeld, Craig, Roos). Bring in the successor early and it's Roos' man taking over. And Kirk just seems a bit too alternative to be a good senior coach to me. Not to mention we start losing and he's shot in the media.
  9. More than happy to wait until next year but I want the senior assistant together with Roos for 2 years. Continuity with Roos is the ingredient most important for a successful transition. The players have to trust the senior assistant when they get the job. That trust is hard to build in 1 season alone. We also can't sell guys we want to trade in on the packaged deal. I was looking forward to this next year when we can show potential recruits just how well the Roos and assistant have worked and so on. Now this year we sell Roos for one or two years then who knows takes over and this time next year we might be selling 1 year with Roos and a brand new head coach. Players want to move to a place where they no a coach rates them and will be around for a long time to keep rating them.
  10. I still think Sydney put him between a rock and a hard place. If they gave him their blessing early then he probably would've taken the gig. Instead he had to choose between 1 year stuck at Sydney then taking the Melbourne job or the 3 year deal at Sydney. But good luck to them. I'm not sure why I liked Dew besides his novelty come back showing you can be portly and dominate AFL. He was large and in charge. Anyway back to the drawing board. Simon Goodwin has signed on at Essendon. Geel, Haw, Syd, Coll a lot of the recent premiers have been stripped of the glamour assistants. Mark Stone or Simon Lloyd from Sydney. Look that up - http://www.fremantlefc.com.au/footy-centre/coaching-staff
  11. That's not entirely true. Outside ball isn't a matter of just getting handballs out the back. Hard running that breaks lines, leading out into space etc would be much harder at senior level than junior level where the game is more open. I just want to see the correct way of winning outside ball not the soft way. Take Brad Hill from Hawthorn who wins most of his footy outside, but he gets it through his high engine and speed to get on the end of plays. I don't think I've ever seen Brad Hill double round for a hand ball or lead right out to the half back flank for a sideways kick. So that's how I'd break down Aish's game. Then his inside game you'd just have to compare his output to his potential and it's probably what you see on vision more than stats to do that. The other reason I'd take notice in Aish if is his game standouts as a guy who turns contested ball into uncontested ball with scoring ability. Sam Mitchell does a lot of grunt work. But what he does even better is let Sewell or Lewis get first hands on the ball and uses his vision and dual sided ability to turn a hot handball into open uncontested play and a scoring opportunity. That's often harder to do than just winning the clearance. I wouldn't say no to a guy who can do that. I would say no to a guy who completely skirts the packs and gets a high percentage of ball from marks in the back 50 or handball receives when he's standing defensive side.
  12. I love how it goes on and on then. "consider this Fitzy on a wing" Like it's some miraculous move that will save us. Proud to be Gu.less
  13. Probably just as likely a BGS guy stole your boyfriend. Just tell me it wasn't Wattsy!
  14. I would've thought Vince would be like Franklin....he could move to any team to be with his girlfriend from that state!
  15. Question - are those numbers his contested possession for SANFL seniors (against men and often playing in an outside role) and at the under 18 champs where he was tagged and not back to his best form after shoulder surgery. I'd like to see his contested possession numbers against players of his own age but then again I don't know how many games Aish has even played of SANFL under 18's in the last 2 years. Might just be bias by recent memory but I think some of the South Australian kids in particular would benefit from less senior footy and more under 18 footy to really develop their game instead of just certain aspects that get focused on when they step up a level. Then again racking up 40 a week in the TAC isn't necessarily right either. I'm sure Tom Boyd would've loved the chance for a few weeks stretch of VFL this year if he wasn't injured.
  16. If we got Michie as well and added a certain best 10 player in Vince as well another in that same category as Michie in Lyon (ie. clearly around our best 22 and at an age to be ready to go with a solid preseason) then I'd certainly be happy to keep pick 2. I'd even consider whether Cross is right for us and probably wait until closer to draft time to think about him. Could come on board in a playing and development coach joint role and that playing could be at Casey not at Melbourne.
  17. Well your question is why does everyone rate Michie considering he's only played 1 AFL game. My argument is why does everyone rate Boyd. Boyd's had injuries as well. Michie was a quality TAC and under 18 champ performer, not to the level of Boyd of course. And his WAFL form was sensation. And he's played under Ross Lyon who doesn't give chances to kids easily. We (Demonland) are talking about potentially trading pick 40 or so for this guy and think he can contribute. If GWS will accept a trade of pick 40 for pick 1 to allow us to get Boyd then that's fine by me.
  18. Yep. And his role moved around a lot at Adelaide between half back, wing and half forward as they had Scotty Thompson, Dangerfiled, Van Berlo etc. At Melbourne he'd be the clear number 2 and would surely take pressure from Jones. He's hardly perfect as he's not a gun clearance player or elite runner both ways but considering he'd be replacing Sylvia he would offer similar output at least. As long as we day pay more for the right to get Vince than what we got for Sylvia.
  19. You forget Vince can actually still play AFL, Jamar can't. Would definitely do Vince and Lyons for Sylvia compo if it's mid second round or if its after our second round pick. Would consider Vince and Lyons for Pick 20. Wouldn't want just Vince for pick 20 or him mixed up in pick 2 in any way.
  20. Don't think they'd want Spencer. We could interest them in Fitzy he's clearly better than Martin but I don't think they'd like that. Otherwise Strauss, Blease or Tapscott but their currency is low. They certainly need some players if they lose Docherty, Polec, Longer, Yeo etc, can't just get picks for all of them.
  21. And Jack Steven is the one absolutely untouchable on St Kilda's list. They'd burn the club down if they traded him I think. No to mention if GWS accept pick 2 + Sam Fisher for pick 1 why wouldn't they do pick 3 + Sam Fisher and the saints keep Steven. I'm sure the saints have offered pick 3 and Sam Fisher and I'm sure GWS have knocked it back.
  22. I think he'll take a tonne of development (besides his body) to be a real star though. To me he could be an even better version of Andrew Walker at his best at either end of the ground. He has the speed, size, height and leap to be super good at either half forward, half back or the wing. Not convinced he'll be a Dangerfield though who does it from the centre square, that's the next level. If anyone can develop him into that it will be Sydney, although it will take a few preseasons to get his body right regardless.
  23. Scott's very set on his game plan though. Every chance to get the chop soon if they don't learn how to defend. Hiring Tudor was a good sign. What I think is happening with some of the Malthouse guys are they are trying to get the strict disciplinary style of Mick without getting the runs on the board first. You have to earn respect and Malthouse did that after his years of coaching. They can be as strict as they like (and stricter than Mick even) but they have to ditch the ego and build the respect first.
  24. In which Caro claims that Stone is free to join Melbourne. It's old, but Caro isn't usually wrong on things like this.
  25. What about Kelly? What about trading pick 2? What about not making this thread
