Shocking for the competition. No joy in this even if it's Carlton. Only good footy news so far is the likelihood of GW$ losing Treloar because of the money Sheedy wasted trying to punish Melbourne.

And yet Checker was sitting in the coaches box in 64 gf, can't Have been too much of an issue. I think Smith counselled Barassi to do a Rossie Lyon, and go to a team on the up.
-
Don't forget Smith and Barassi were both shopping around in '64, according to Red Fox. Ultimately the business model collapsed cow of over-reliance on these two.

An uglier win was v Collingwood in Sep 1964. Scrappy play, no forward line and a fluke snap getting us over the line.

How did you end up following the Mighty Dees?

When he marked I thought, beauty, we're into the grand final. -

Just poetic licence, Tassie Johnson wasn't bad either. -

1. Ron Barassi's TV segment got me started. 2. Idolised Hassa Mann through the 60s, the only blue blood left from our golden era. 3. Favourite moment/s were our two finals wins in '87. 4. Worst moment by the length of the straight was Simon Eishold's massive choke in the '87 prelim. 5. Still mystified by our sudden fall from greatness. One moment in 1965 we were unbeaten on top of the ladder, next moment Ian Cooper takes a massive speccy, followed by 50 years of football melancholy. -
A la Brad Miller!

Absolutely sickening, and heart rending. My guess is the round will be abandoned.

Post Match Discussion - Round 12 (never in doubt)

Have always had a soft spot for Geelong - their style of play has epitomised Australian rules over the years. On the other hand am enjoying greatly the demise of Essendon and Carlton. -

Selwood an absolute champion, a bit churlish sledging him. -

Dear Demonlanders, Is the MND walk from Fed Square to the G? And what time does it start, pls? BD

Hassa was right up there with Barassi in my childhood memories. He had a habit of kicking winning goals at the death, most famously:
-
you obviously don't drink enough coldies at the footy.
-
Seeing the footy at Casey is FAR better than the G. You can walk on the ground and listen to the coach and the line coaches, wander around at will and get up real close to the action.

We have got better this year. a couple of years ago we could only beat start up teams with funny names. this year we are winning games, some weeks.

1990 - The season that could easily have been ours
bush demon replied to iv'a worn smith's topic in Melbourne Demons
Particularly galling, because we had the 'wood' on the pies, having beaten them in the 1989 final series (not to mention our consecutive finals wins over them dating back to 1939). I was at the WCE game at the Jackson's Rd end there was a solitary fat guy yelling for WCE all afternoon amongst us polite Dee supporters. West Coast bamboozled us with their trick of switching the ball to either side of the ground. -
If the Collingwood Essendon ANZAC day politicisation of sport is cancelled then it would be fair to ask Adam not to stir up the masses. In the meantime, go for it Goodsey. I remember Muhammed Ali being despised for much the same reasons.

Moral of the story: always check the used-by date.

i will get jumped on for this, but would just like to nitpick 'aboriginal'. i think you would say 'indigenous' these days. i am not trying to be clever here. i just remember this was the term used in the 60's when i was a kid, and can sound demeaning: http://www.aboriginalartonline.com/culture/aboriginal.php

Come in spinner. Took Barassi off us by stealth. Bought premierships. The 2002 salary cap schemozzle. Elliott. Bringing in a peeved Malthouse and Daisy to win a premiership. It's taken a long time, and i hope it's a long time near the bottom for the good old navy blues. ps good song though.

When you have been going around in the wash as a supporter since the mid-60's like me the wounds get deeper and deeper by the year. I got my red and blue membership materials in the mail yesterday and must say that i am less inclined to wack stickers over my car, or wear a scarf on the train these days. The national competition does not include teams such as Melbourne, we too are mere passengers. Who does the AFL really comprise? from Vic: Hawthorn, Geelong, Collingwood, and MAYBE Essendon. It's a long way back for every other team. From Brisbane: a complete stuff-up, could see those two teams merging and calling them the Queensland jungle. from nsw: who cares about gws, they have more midfielders going through the midfield than supporters through the gate. from south australia and w.a, their four teams will stay strong as they are strong footballing states. am a supporter of the national concept, just hope melbourne can remain in some form or other in the long term.
