Cold - it is a winter sport, Geelong would be colder (and despite no rain I typically find ShytyHead freezing)
Uncomfortable - at the time spectator seating was no more uncomfortable than most parts of the G and everyone could get a seat
Congested - not the ground, spectator area or parking, The surrounding roads, exits yes
Hard to access - yes
To me there were only two major problems
1/ Access by public transport - and this was purely political esp when the premier was on the board of trustees for MCG
2/ Arrangement of spectator area - too far from the boundary and too gentle a slope on tierring
Point 1 could have been solved but point 2 would have required a massive rebuild
A pity really because the sport really requires another large capacity stadium and they did stuff this one up.
Others would argue that the location disadvantaged the growth areas North and West. True, but at that time, and before ShytyHead, there was room to also build a similar complex in the NorthWest.
Anyway, its all water under the bridge now and the big end of town won out
