  1. QUOTE (M_9 @ Feb 27 2009, 02:50 AM) TOP DRAFT PICK JACK WATTS' AFL DEBUT DISTANT PROSPECT "Really glad that they are managing these kids conservatively and for the future. It would have been tempting to rush them, but good sense has prevailed. Imagine the buzz it will create if Jack (in particular) makes his senior debut on Queen's B'day weekend." The above is what I said back in February. I was wrong ... it's not a 'buzz', it's a mighty bloody roar. Monday will be a sensational day at the G, and nothing could keep me away! Go DEES.
  2. If Jack needs to be part of a winning team to get a nomination, I guess it will happen next Monday then.
  3. .... and JB, KC, AW, NJ, JS (the other one) et al.
  4. Perfect Steamin. I'm travelling down from Canberra to be part of it all. Wouldn't miss it for anything!
  5. Yep, was on Kosi for majority of the night. Lots of strong spoils (kept him one goal despite the ball being delivered to Kosi's advantage on many occasions.), a couple of strong marks, and lots of 'trademark' Riv. work, leaving his man, when appropriate, to assist team mates in other contests, etc ie. the sort of stuff that doesn't get a mention in most radio coverage. Agree that kicking has never been Riv's strongest suit.
  6. 6- Rivers (getting back to his best) 5- Jamar (one of his best games - keep it up 'Rush'.) 4- Grimes (skilfil and composed) 3- McLean (lots of grunt work, and disposal better than recent weeks) 2- Frawley (solid, with some good run) 1- Maric (excellent first half, just ok second half)
  7. Couldn't have said it better myself. Another great read, thanks WJ!
  8. Vs. C'wood. We win by two points, the decider being a set shot by Greeny after the siren (from 50m. on the boundary, of course!). The thought of it takes me back to '64. I'm not sure the heart could handle it this time around, but geez, I'd die a happy bloke.
  9. Geez Einstein, you are a dope!
  10. Agree with all of that Rhino .......... and the real positive to come out of this whole saga, is the strong indication (at the selection table) that the culture is changing ie. play for the team or you won't play. Fantastic to see! In my view its every bit as important as player talent, as we strive for the ultimate success.
  11. Great to see the coaching staff prepared to make what some may percieve to be tough decisions. Names and reputations earned in the distant past no longer count, and thats an enormous positive for the future of the Melbourne Footy Club.
  12. I'm wouldn't be in favour of this Tassie have already adopted the Dorks. We need a 'greenfields' location of our own, where there are serious opportunities to grow our supporter / membership base.
  13. Great idea, so long as we stick to the principles that Schwabby has outlined. Two or three games a year (one of them being part of Indigenous Round ... fantastic!), plus a pre-season game, NT Govt. sponsorship and facilities upgrade, we do some community work and grow our membership base. Seems like it could be win / win all round. Need to ensure that Community work doesn't compromise input at Casey.
  14. I reckon that if T.Mac and Hughes can maintain / improve their recent form for Casey, they will be given a few senior games for sure. The Football Dept. will want to have a look at what they can do at the top level ....... some really tough decisions need to be made at seasons end.
  15. Fantastic, gutsy, team oriented return by Greeny. I know Robbo's 'epic' has been done to death elsewhere, but I can't think of two more contrasting contributions to the Melbourne cause on Sunday evening .... Greeny vs Robbo.
  16. Absolute nonsence! The game at AFL level had well and truely passed Jeff by when he received a tap on the shoulder at Melbourne. He played a good part of his last season at Sandringham, and was no more than a solid contributor at VFL level. If he still had it in him, he would have been drafted by another club!!
  17. I remember your cousins playing with the Dees (well Wrecker and Terry anyway. John only played two senior games). I have a bit of stuff that may interest you, including a small b & w photo of the 1960 premiership team and a photo of Terry in 1966, his first year with the Dees and the year he won the Bluey. I'll email you with details, and you can tell me what you want.
  18. I have always made a point of not bagging Melbourne players on here, but (sadly), I feel compelled to agree with you 100% Einstein. Robbo's actions were hypocritical in the extreme!
  19. 1. Sylvia - career best game by a mile 2. Rivers - starting to work his way back to best 3. Green - very good first up from injury 4. PJ - improving with responsibility 5. J.Mac - probably his best for the year to date 6. Maric - great skills, great promise.
  20. I certainly wouldn't regard myself as one of the 'wiser' posters here, but I've been around for a while, and remember Kenny's playing days reasonably well. Kenny was a lightly framed rover / crumbing small forward for Melbourne for about 8 years during the 1960's, and was 19th man in the '64 Premiership Team. He was what I would describe as a 'solid' contributor, but I don't recall him having any remarkable attributes like blistering speed or outstanding foot-skills. I guess he was like many of his team mates in that era, ie. good honest footballers without being anything special (many members of the star studded teams of the 1950's and early 60's had either retired or were in the twilight of there careers by the time Kenny arrived on the scene). Ken averaged about a goal a game over his hundred odd games for the Dees, but as I recall, he always seemed to play in the shadow of more highly distinguished fellow rover / forward Johnny Townsend. Off the top of my head, I find it hard to draw a comparison with any current or recent Demon players (the game was much different back then) but maybe he was a bit of a Steven Armstrong type. I'm sure that the 'wiser' ones around here will be able elaborate further, or correct my recollections.
  21. Great story Einstein. Thanks for sharing it with us.
  22. Me neither. I'm firmly in your camp on that one.
  23. Neither of our main 'run with' players (Bartram / Dunn) have been selected, while Bateman, Mitchell, Sewell and Rioli are all going well for the Hawks. The match-ups will be fascinating!!
