Colin Sylvia- Complaints, Congratulations and Comments
sylvinator replied to Don24's topic in Melbourne Demons
I posted this somewhere else, but realized it was more appropriote here... I think people are sooooo off the mark with Sylvia. The problem is that people expect him to be a champion simply because he was pick 3. The reality however, is that there are only about 5-10 quality players to come out of that draft and it was extrmely poor draft. Think about how many top 10 picks turn out to be duds and don't even play an AFL game. Simply because you're a top pick means you have the potential to be a superstar. Sylvia is and will be for a very long time a good/very good player for MFC. nothing more and nothing less. He will play on a forward flank most of this year and i predict he will, on average, get 15-18 quality possessions and kick a couple of goals. This is a more than respectable return. Not the return of a superstar, but a good return for a pretty good player. We need to change our mindset with Sylvia. We will gain a 150 player who averages around 1-2 goals a game and shows some genuine glimpses of magic. He will play on the wing or as a forward. He will never be MFC's best player, and never the most important player. Regardless of what other think, I like watching Sylvia play and will continue to enjoy this for the next few years -

The fact is that we have ALOT of holes in our list. Some of these holes were filled today: Key forward- Watts Pacey, highly skilled midfielders- Blease, Strauss, Bennel and Bail Small forward (to allow Davey to move permanently further up the ground)- Jetta By filling these positions I think we did extremely well. especially considering our current midfield lacks flair, pace and athleticism, these players will add excitement to our team. However considering we have so many holes in our list it cannot be expected to fill all of these in 1 draft! We still lack a top class ruckman. We still need 1 more key forward to act as a twin tower to Watts. Lastly we could use 1 more great midfielder. Hopefully next year we can use our picks on these types of guyz so that we'll be fully set for 2010 draft which is taken over by GC17
-
I like Tom Rockcliffe for the PSD. VERY surprised he wasn't picked up, I thought he was top30 pick. 1 Ruckman should be picked up in the Rookie Draft. They must rate Spensor because showing alot of faith in him.

Current midfield: Moloney, Jones, Mclean, Grimes---- all strong inside midfielders who can get the ball and run all day but don't have great athletisicm or acceleration. They also aren't renowned for their precise kicking skills. Makes sense to now complement these 4 with fast players with great kicking skills: Sam Blease, James Strauss... Add to that: Morton and Buckley as Utilities Last 2 years we've added to our midfield: Morton, Grimes, Blease and Strauss.... our midfield is starting to look better.

It has been openly reported that Carrol's salary will be included in the 2008 Total Player Payments. It has also been confirmed that if Carrol's entire $250,000 salary was included in the 2008 TPPs then MFC would be over the salary cap and in breach of the salary cap. Therefore, clearly Carrol must have been paid out for much less than $250,000. He's 28 years old and he is our 6th best key defender behind Warnock, Rivers, Martin, Garland and Frawley... I'm glad to see the back of him. It seems we were able to do it cheaply as well

No doubt this will be VERY wrong, but i like phantom drafts... 1-Melb- Jack Watts- best available and fills our needs 2-WCE- Nick Naitanui- next best available 3-Freo- Daniel Rich- Rich, Palmer, Ibbotson and suddenly a weakness looks strong at freoland 4-Port- Tryone Vickory- Lade and Brogan almost gone and also best available 5-Ess- Chris Yarren- best available. 6-Carlt- Michael Hurley- this will add shape to a crap defence. 7-Bris- Sam Bleese- Voss likes what he sees in this kid. 8-Rich- Jack Zeibel- best available. like Morton, flexibility is the way of the future. this kid can do everything 9-Nth- Steele Sidebottom- Good player and next best. 10-Adel- Hamish Hartlett- great SA kid. 11-Pies- Steven Hill- Will add good pace and agility to their midfield 12-Syd- Jackson Trengove- next best KPP. 13-Stk- Lewis Johnson- very good key forward who will be a third tall at afl level 14-WB- Ayce Cordy-F/S 15-Cats- Tom Swift- could be the best of the lot, but 2 knees by 18yrs is a risk... cats will take the risk 16-Hawks- Jordan Lisle- their one weakness is the need for 1 more key defender. this kid is it. -------------------------------------------------------------- 17-Melb- Shaun McKernan- I love the look of him. Adding McKernan and Watts will turn our forward line from our weakness to our strength 18-WCE- Ryan Shoenmakers- looks a really good player. --------------------------------------------------------------- 19-Melb- Mitch Robinson- With so many quality forwards in the first round, this quality midfielder slips to 19. Morton, Jones, Mclean, Grimes, Buckley and Robinson and suddenly our midfield is starting to take shape. A fast zippy midfielder is still lacking but this can be addressed later in the draft. 20-WCE- Neville Jetta- best available small forward imo 21-Freo- Aaron Cornelius- Finnaly someone to help out Pav? 22-Port- Tom Rockliff- good forward 23-Ess- Nick Suban- 2 time AA good half back flanker 24-Freo- Jordan Roughead- Ruckman to replace Warnock Only guessing after this--------- There are still plenty of quality players left here. Rhys Okeefe, Clancee Pearce, Michael Walters, Nick Heyne, David Zaharakis, Matt Deboer, Shuey, Beams, Broadbent, Strauss, Lynch, Beams, Brown, Redden... One of these will be chosen at 35. I think at 35 or 51 we should loook to draft a ruckman. Maybe a guy like Redden
-
Will MFC and Scorpions be affiliated next year then? I bloody hope they don't have any decent KPP, because I want us to be developing ours playing in the key positions and not in the pockets which we were forced to do with Sautner!!!
-
i've got an awesome idea. He's 22 years old so fits out age bracket perfectly. He's got great kicking skills which is what we need. He can supply drive off half back which is what we lack. His name is Chris Johnson.
-
we are seriously such a crappy club atm. As if we just throw away a guy who we put 4 years of development into him, he finnally starts playing good footy and is one of the only players on our list who can actually kick the footy. Anyways... Final list changes for the year------ Out: 1) Neitz 2) Yze 3) Holland 4) White 5) Weetra 6) Bode 7) Carrol 8) Chris Johnson In: 1) Wonaeamirri (Elevated Rookie) 2) Pick 1- Jack Watts 3) Pick 17 4) Pick 19 5) Pick 35 6) Pick 51 7) pick 67 8) PSD pick 1 Retained Rookies- Valenti, Spenser, Zomer Veterans- Robertson, McDonald
-
Blease would be good because he is exactly what we need atm- a midfielder with good footskills, is a finisher and is quick enough to run the ball out of congestion. Atm we have too many workhorse- Valenti, Mclean, Moloney, Jones, Grimes etc
-
If we don't have the $$$$ then we have the worst footbal managers in the league. We have no player in the best 50 players in the afl. We just retired White, Yze and Neitz (previously our top 3 most highly paid players). Okeefe would come in to our team and be our best player by far
-
In a team which is crying out for forwards, he got delisted and was in and out of the team... NO THANKS. I would focus all my attention on Lonergan. At least he was a regular in Geelong, kicked 36 goals in 16 games. Not a superstar, but a good fill while we wait for Watts to fire
-
I think it's fairly certain Wonaeamirri will be upgraded from the rookie list. He is a cult figure in the afl already and we need good publicity! He is in our best 22 i would think and he had a really good year. Well deserving of a place on the list. In that case, we will not use pick 66 UNLESS we delist one more player before the draft. I'm not sure if this will happen, we can only speculate. Zomer played sandy ressies most of the year didn't show too much. Next year he must be kicking regular goals at sandy seniors if he wants a chance to prolong his afl career. Spenser could be our next rookie listed ruckman who makes good (Jolly, Jamar etc). he looks promising well worth developing. Valenti looks good but i'd keep him on the rookie list. he's a solid depth player imo in case of a long term injury.
-
MFC has clearly looked for every way to get out of paying Carrol's salary, but one things for certain. he won't be playing for us next year. Out: 7 Neitz, Yze, White, Holland, Carrol, Weetra, Bode In: pick1,17,19,35,51 PSD 1 Elevate Wonamearri. Keep Spenser and Valenti on the rookie list one more season.
-
Quite a convincing argument... Our midfield in definitely in need of strengthening, so perhaps 2 midfielders at 17 and 19 is the way to go! Perhaps even a ruckman- ala Roughead- could be in the mix at 19? thank you for the kind words DemonWithin.... you may post less than others however you are always extremely insightful... you're definitely up there with Scoop and WJ!
-
I'm sorry but this argument is totally flawed. Geelong have 7 AAs this year and 9 last year. These guys ALL would demand huge pay packets. Carlton have 2 AAs, and pretty much farkall else on their list. they have a crap list bar 6 players. If Geelong, with the quality they have in their team can fit into the cap, so can Carlton.

From what I've seen in the national championships and the other limited knowledge, I have, this is my break down of the first round: Dean Bailey made in clear there are 4 standouts. Therefore our pick 1 is out of: 1. Watts- KPP 2. Rich- Mid 3. Naitanui- Ruck/ athletic freak 4. Vickery- Ruck/ forward The rest of the top 10 picks are pretty settled and it is quite clear that these players will most likely be gone by our pick 17/19: 5. Yarran (Bailey rates him 5-7, won't go past 10) 6. Hartlett (many rate the best mid in the draft close to Rich) 7. Hurley (the highest rated true KPP in the draft) 8. Sidebottom (after his GF no way he'll slide to 17) 9. Zeibell (too highly rated to fall any further than pick 10) 10. L. Johnston (highly rated KPF- he's from SA and Adel have pick 10 and need forwards) 14. Ayce Cordy (Father-son pick) There are therefore 9 more players to be picked till pick 19, two of which will become MFC players. I will list the players who are in the mix, of which 2 will be our picks... 11. Blease- a VERY fast, highly skilled midfielders. If we were drafting for needs, his pace through the midfield would be perfect for MFC. 12. McKernan- big, strong and agile like his brother. could be great, only query would be if at 197cm is his size stuck between KPP and Ruck? 13. Trengove- behind Hurley, then next most highly rated KP defender in the draft. 196cm and agile. 15. Robinson- played amazingly well in the championships. is a midfielder who could step in rnd1 and probably be in our starting 4 midfielders. 16. Swift- 2 knee recos, but at u16 level was supposed to be the number 1 pick by a mile. a risk, but one that geelong can afford to take. tested well at draft camp. 17. Suban- has the form on the board! 2 AAs in a row, is a great footballer and will be a half back flanker that we need 18. Hill- most agile player ever tested pretty much. looked awesome in the championships. WCE would love him to slip to them. 19. Cornelius- KP forward. We need 2 young key forwards coming through at minimum! this guy looked great for tassie in the championships. strong mark and agile. Watts, Cornelius added to Miller, Maric, Sylvia, Bate and Davey would mean our forward line could actually become a strength! Another 4 players who would fit in nicely at our picks and could all easily slip into the first round: - Schoenmakers- agile 192cm forward - Heyne- clever 185cm forward - Zaharakis- quick as lightning - Walters- quick and classy So ... my picks would be 1. Watts 17. Suban 19. Cornelius Justification: We need to add 2 keyfowards with Miller and Newton our only current options. Also, with Wheatley (28), Whelan (30) and McDonald (31) our 3 half back flankers atm (i dont rate CJ that highly) we need to look at some quality half backs and Suban is the answer. We drafted Cheney for this purpose last year however he was a speculative pick. I know our midfield needs strengthening, especially some pace, however this can be looked at later in the draft, plus we picked up 2 gun mids last year (Grimes and Morton)! As i mentioned, you could essentially throw a blanket over the players from pick 11-pick26... so it's a distinct possibility that a guy like Blease could slip to us. Considering my framework of the players MFC has to choose from, who would you choose for MFC's picks??????[/b]
-
We should simply treat the PSD pick 1 at essentially the first pick in the rookie draft. There are always plenty of quality players that aren't picked in the National draft. Just look at the awesome rookie listed players who have become champions... aaron Davey, McDonald and Robbo from our club... Dean Cox, Aaron Sandilands ring any bells??? Last year we picked up Stefan Martin in the PSD.... he's 21 and came from Sandy. he was speculative and for that reason probably wasn't picked up in the national draft.... now we'v got ourselves a 199cm player who's fastest at our club, and is big and strong fullback! let's find another such player!
-
im upset we didn't get prismall... at pick 35 it's simply a lotttery. Why couldn't we just trump essendon's pick 38?!!!!
-
Correct--- quite remarkable. top 5 in the bnf means ALOT. shows he's been in our top few players over a very long period of time. should be our club captain next year
-
If Warnock goes through to the PSD we 100000% should pick him up. In any normal circumstances he's worth a first round pick, so it's essentially picking up an extra 1st rounder for FREE. Just pay him 350k a season. If he turns into a champ ruckman it'll be worth it!!! our ruck stocks are terrible atm and he could be the fix it needs. We'v got room in the cap, i'd rather pay out Carrol for 250k and spend 350k on a player that truely has a future!!!!
-
It's official- he's signed for 3 years. I'm glad he's signed because he's our best player. However, MFC has farked up many time with 3 yr deal to 27 yrolds--- White and Yze come to mind. Let's hope it doesn't happen again
-
confirmed by Collingwoods recruiting manager on SEN- Were you interested in Brad Green? A- "he's signed now with Melbourne, so that's probably best for all parties"
-
incorrect.... MFC has been told that it should reduce in TPP from 100% currently (how the fark!!!) down to 92.5%. It has been told this because paying anything above 92.5% when you're dead last for 2 years is complete and utter mis-management. MFC has applied for $1.5M is assistence from the afl, and thus, in order to prove MFC is managing its finances properly. this is one of the requirements. Most importantly, every club MUST pay atleast 92.5% of the cap. MFC has gotten no permission otherwise.
