Matthew Bate is severly underated by some on this forum. Is that his 2nd or 3rd top5 finish in our B&F?! He is a very good forward prospect and I see him playing CHF in years to come, playing up the ground and then moving close to goal kickign 3 goals. Gary Lyon was quoted this season for saying that Bate would be considered in the top 30 players in the afl if he played for Geelong. I tend to agree.

Would it be the silliest thing for us to make a play for Bradshaw, if Ball resigns with Stkilda? We have absolutely no reason to come near the bottom of the ladder anymore. Coming 3rd last next year earns you pick 10 only! We could use Bradshaw to teach and protect Watts and Jurrah. Provide a proper target up forward to help our developing midfield. Then, in 2 years time, Watts and Jurrah will become viable targets anyways. He would help us left off the bottom of the ladder

Is anyone starting to feel that there are only 1 or 2 tall forwards worthy of pick 11 or 18. Pick 11- Butcher appears only worthy tall foward of that pick Pick 18- Aaron Black, Panos, Carlisle all appear worthy of that pick. Would it maybe be worth picking best available at pick 11 and then going for a tall at 18 and again perhaps at 34. E.g. Pick 1- Scully Pick 2- Trengove Pick 11- top 10 sliders---- Lucas, Rohan, Jetta, Tapscott, Cunnington, Sheppard--- all legitimately worthy of pick 11. Better one of these guyz than a tall forward who doesn't deserve to be picked so high (Luke Molan anyone?) Pick 18- best available Tall forward- there are a number who are worthy of pick 18, including Carlisle, Black, Temel, Panos, Butcher, Fitzpatric, Vardy (ruckman) Pick 34- A smoky tall forward or a tall forward that has slipped through... someone we think we can develop

I really really like McDonald. He is EXACTLY what is missing from our backline. A rebounding defender, who can give drive off half back, but also has a natural and strong defensive part to their game. Our tall backs are set... with Grimes moving into the midfield, Buckley being delisted and Strauss eventually being a midfielder, we need a half back flanker. Our only options at the moment are pretty crappy in Cheney, Bell and Bartram. Defence 2010: McDonald Warnock Frawley Garland Rivers Bennel

AFL.com article: "Down the track, I can see myself playing half-forward or half-back and perhaps not so much on the wing. I might end up playing on the bigger body type players, if I play centre half-forward or centre half-back," Morton said. "I want to have a real hard crack at pre-season this year and become a more rounded player" Loving the idea of Morton as our CHF! He would be a powerful athlete at CHF, with power running and strong marking. His marking in particular has improve out of sight. It's been confirmed by Morton himself and others many times that he has grown to 194cm. If he plays at 95kg, with his skill and endurance, he would be unstoppable. Bate, Jurrah, Watts and Morton would be such a richly diverse and skillful forward line

Wouldn't it make more sense to keep him on the rookie list, considering the change to the rookie list rules. I'd keep Spenser AND McKenzie on the rookie list. If they are good enough, they'll be upgraded at the end of next season, where there'll be plenty of spots on the list considering Bell, Newton, PJ etc come out of contract
-
I guess the only question is whether one last player will be delisted to open up pick 34. However, next year we should have NO problem clearing off lots of players. I've been looking through our list and there's still quite a bit of dead wood to release. Players who look certain to be on the chopping block for next season: - J. McDonald (retire) - D. Bell - M. Newton - B. Miller - P. Johnson - D. Bail Other possibilities if they don't kick on: - McNamara - Bartram - Dunn Other than that, there doesn't appear to be any other dead wood on our list! Our list is certainly coming together nicely! Team in 2012: Bennel Warnock Frawley Garland Rivers Strauss Davey Scully Morton Trengove Bate Sylvia Jurrah Watts Wona Spenser Moloney Grimes Int: Jones, Martin, Maric, Blease, Jetta (Green & Bruce if still around), pick 11 2009, pick 18 2009
-
Truthfully, i wouldn't touch Kane Tenace, or any other player that can't kick. But, I started this thread bc it is off season, and I thought it was worthy, at least, of discussion. Not much else to talk about this time of year
-
Back in the real world, it can't have been easy to break into the geelong midfield. Best midfield in the league
-
Strange to delist Buckley unless his injury is career threatening. He is surely better than the prospects out there for pick34 in this shallow draft. He is great pace and great dash. Is a half back flanker. Seems exactly what we'd like. It must be his poor decision making and poor kicking. Bailey is obsessed (and rightly so) with players who can hit targets
-
We should seriously be starting to make profits... in the past we have made $1m losses, but since then... - we are paying $700,000 less a year in total player payments - $1m extra from stadium deals - $1m from MCC - $1m from AFL - good sponsorship deal - 32,000 members Surely surely surely, considering the $800,000 of debt demolition and the above things, we will make a profit this year, even despite the GFC!? Once we start making profits, this can help wipe out the debt.

Anyone interested? Rookie pick up? Can't have been easy to get into the geelong line-up, perhaps could life in another team?

Jesse Smith walks out on North Melbourne
sylvinator replied to Demon_Tingles's topic in Melbourne Demons
Which draft is he walking into? If it's the PSD, then he's a great option if Ball resigns with StKilda. If it's the National draft, then picking him up at pick 34 would be ideal. Jess Smith (rebounding HBF) + Luke Ball + pick 1,2,11,18 would be a fantastic outcome -
Jesse Smith and Joel McDonald are both atttractive PSD options bc they both fill a need. We need rebounding running defenders who also have a defensive side to their game. That would perfectly completement our Key position defenders. Strauss, Bennel and Grimes are currently playing that role, but I feel all 3 are better suited to midfield roles. The number one option should still be Luke Ball bc he is a quality player with experience, and only 25 yrs old. People keep stating we won't be premiership chances for 5-6 years... however with the addition of a few quality players we could half that time to 2-3 years. In 3 years time I see no reason why we can't be up there and players like Luke Ball would quicken the development process
-
I want Luke Ball! He is better player than Mclean- just look at how he played in the GF- 22 possies with 50% game time. With 100% game time you're looking at Dane Swan numbers. He is a good player, good leadership and has neat skills (though lacks a penetrating kick). He's still young 25, and therefore will be a quality experienced player when we hit finals in 2011 or 2012. No doubt Ball is worth a first round pick... getting him in the PSD would essentially mean 5 first rounders this year (1,2,11,18 and Ball). If we can't get Ball, i'm still very interested in Jesse Smith and Joel McDonald. Both are rebounding defenders and are young. I feel we really need a quality rebounding defender to complement our Key position defenders

Silly comment... Dal Santo drafted at 11, Higgins at 11, Rich at 7, Selwood at 7, Grimes at 14.... etc etc etc.... quality players sometimes slide a few spots depending on the needs of the clubs. If we got Butcher at 11 I would absolutely stoked. He will become an awesome forward combination with Watts, Butcher and Jurrah as our Talls. I actually think Butcher is underated around here. Kicked 30.18 goals, was the dominant forward for the past 2 years in TAC level. If he was available for last years draft he would certainly have gone top 10. I think it is the case of the clubs have 2 full years to analyse him for flaws, similar to what clubs said about Rich pre-draft. It is also worth considering that he was double manned every single game he plays bc he is the star forward. Scully, Trengove, Butcher and Sheppard will be the perfect draft for me!
-
Where Butcher will be drafted is getting VERY interesting. Tigers will pick up Martin for sure, after picking up Post and Vickery in previous drafts. The bombers are looking to strengthen their midfield (ala Cunnington) so will pass as well... (see article below). http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/tige...f-1225782480791 1. Melbourne: T. Scully 2. Melbourne: J. Trengove 3. Richmond: D. Martin 4. Fremantle: A. Morabito 5. North Melbourne: G. Rohan 6. Sydney: K. Lucas 7. West Coast: L.Jetta 8. Port Adelaide: L. Tapscott 9. Port Adelaide: Panos/ Craig/ Tahlia (Burgoyne deal) 10. Essendon: B. Cunnington 11. Melbourne: J. Butcher!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The top 4 is set.... North have a number of huge forwards.... WCE are set on Jetta. Lucas and Cunnington are certain top 10 picks. I would love Butcher

This is a great thing... firstly for team morale.... but also bc we can afford to pay him over the odds this year and next, bc we are trying to find ways to fill our salary cap. Plus, in the last 2 years of his contract he will be going on to the veterans list, meaning even if we are still paying him over the odds only half of that will be going towrads to salary cap! Thus, no matter how much we are paying him, even if we ARE paying him over the odds.... it makes absolutely no difference to our salary cap, which is really the thing supporters should be caring about. The fact that Essendon might have made us pay him more is good for Davey, but doesn't negatively impact the demons in any way, as explained above
-
We would be silly not to take Fev if we got him for nothing in the PSD. WE have absolutely no reason to still near the bottom of the ladder anymore, even if we come bottom 4 next year, our first pick will be pick 10-15. Why? - Fev could quicken our rise to the top and we'd be playing finals by 2011 - Fev could take the focus away from Watts and Jurrah, allowing them time to actually develop their games without having the best defenders out muscle them each week - We'd finnally have a fukin awesome AA player in our team. - He could be kicking 80+ goals a season for the next 5 years All this provided he agrees to stop drinking alcohol of coarse
-
To me that article sounds like a man who will sign with the demons... i don't take that article as suggesting davey will leave

Shwartz on SEN: I spoke to Cameron Scwab, and he told me that the demons are very very close to signing Davey on a 3 year deal.

Bagging our young up-n-coming teenage stars is getting so old... i mean how many times do you muppets have to be proven wrong before you call youngsters failures wayyy too early. Sylvia had all the qualities and skills to make it... everyone calls for his delisting... and he came good. Other players to be written off rediculously are Pettard, Jones and Frawley. Even Garland was called to be delisted in his first year!!! Morton is 194cm so has very nice height. He has elite running capacity. Has the ability to kick goals, particularly on the run. He has consistently gotten above 25 possessions per game. He has improve his marking out of sight. He was also recruited with elite skills, and his decision making has improved lots It is just so obvious to me that when he hits 23 yrs old he'll be an absolute superstar. If other people can't see it then they must be blind.

A MUST READ! Now that I have had time to digest the news, I have come to this conclusion... I am reasonably content (though certainly not happy) with this trade. Why, you ask? Because I believe the melbourne hierarchy have in their mind the kind of team they want to mould so that we have all areas covered when we finnally make our push. We don't want to end up like Carlton, where our midfield is strong, and our forward/back line [censored] weak. They are constatnly looking to the future for who will make the best compilation of players for our push on the top 4. Look at our midfield in 3 years--- Scully, Trengove, Grimes, Morton, Davey, Moloney, Jones, Strauss, Blease (Bruce/ Green). That's a good mix of inside and outside players, class and toughness AND pace. Having Jones, Moloney and Mclean all in the same midfield has proven to be slow and ineffective. You don't need 3 of the same kind. The fact is, that looking at that future midfield, Mclean would not be a core player. In fact, he'd probably be the 6th or 7th midfield rotation. Losing him is NOT like losing a core future player like Grimes, Morton, Garland, Frawley or Sylvia. Pick 11 is also pretty good. There will be a quality tall prospect still available by then- Tahlia, Carlisle, Panos, Vardy, Fitzgerald. We can choose the one we rate hgihest and develop another key forward. If we use pick 11 well, then this trade will be a DEFINITE victory for MFC.
-
I've got an idea. How about Best available at pick 11 and best available at pick 18. Cyril Rioli slipped to pick 12. Would we pass him up bc we need KPPs more than small forwards? If there is an outstanding prospect at pick 11 you take him, no matter what position. The only consideration would be if 2 players were equally rated, one was a KPP the other a midfielder. then you could choose the KPP. If the midfielder is a better player, you take the midfielder

I'm shocked. I thought the guy loved our club. put his own money into the club... wanted to be our captain. why would he leave? I want answers
