i don't like it ngl, its swings and round abouts its not always the same side benefitting and i like the sentimental connection that comes into these kind of deals where u sign soneone who you've been working with for a long time. the change i would've made is the eligibility critera. i had two mates at school and at a good school who were NGA prospects one had a mum born in south africa but she was as aussie as ever a part from literally place of birth and the other had mexican heritage but it was still at a stretch and u wouldnt know unless u asked. i think they should have tightened the screws on who is eligible to join academies in the first place because somehow not it will put clubs off investing too much because if they help a prospect become too good they'll lose access to them and that doesn't make sense why would u bother if you aren't even going to benefit from all the years of work you've put into them and the relationship between them and club you've created

u can't expect to win flags or make finals if a good trade period involves shaun mckernan and marley williams. realistically u should only sign players from other clubs to be best 22 and the existing players/draftees the onus is on them to earn their spots and push the recruits. i would genuinely rather go into a season with 3 empty spots on our list and save 400k than list either of those players. mitch brown earnt a second season can pinch hit, weid can pinch, jackson can, tomlinson and smith can, bradtke is a ruckman. we dont need a mature 2 because shaun mckernan isnt a natural ruckman any more than any of those guys i listed.

i'd rather josh jenkins didnt get a single look in at the cats or darcy fort same deal there and he has the potential to be shifted on in 2/3 years time too due to his age
