  1. Hi all DL’s! As we edge towards the start of the season proper I’m really keen to hear or read any snippets of insight or opinion on anything Dees related. Most of the time, you guys are great at highlighting significant podcasts, but it’s sometimes hard to find everything. We don’t have the wonderful Melbourne media coverage of AFL unfortunately. Itd be a great help to us interstate-ers if you could keep us up to date with anything you hear down in Melbourne town. Go Dees
  2. Whilst I like the crazy eyes from the 80s, I really like the current design, I’m embracing it!
  3. Love his ground ball action, always gets it to a clean pair of hands or snaps without resistance - go pedo, you wonderful thing! with Hannan, Garlett and Kent/Harmes cramming - it’s a scarily potent fwd line!
  4. It’s certainly going to be an exciting game - win or lose - it will be a great contest! Having said that, I’m hoping that Vince gets into Dangers head so that by hafl way through the first quarter, he’s dragged by the coach. Given the twos history, it’s likely to be a pretty scrappy affair early on, so whilst our big bodies (Bugg, Vince, Viney, Jones, ANB and Kent) are keeping the cats in check and wrestling, I hope our 2nd tier runners are smart enough to play on and give TMAC all the opportunities he needs to hurt them early. By half time, GAJ should have suffered a chicken wing from Viney and Selwood might have dropped his head a little too low and one time too many, onto an oncoming Frost Gigas, unfortunately rendering him unconscious. Our class will sort out the rest of the afternoon and then the fans of the defeated will commence their long, awkward and uncomfortable pilgrimage on the highway back to Geelong. Sounds like the perfect weekend really, better get down there!
  5. Haven’t heard of Funk n Wagnells in years!!! ?????
  6. In practice though, if you want a free kick, just kick it to their runner. Probably wouldn’t work. Maybe restrict it to goal stoppages?
  7. If he were to pull through, that would send a message to Geelong for Rd 1, but if not, we might be tagged as heavy underdogs. Because I'm flying down to Melbourne for that Rd 1 clash, I want to give Viney every chance of success - so cotton wool for me during JLT..
  8. When you say defensive skill did you mean forward pressure (lock it in) type skills?
  9. Yeah good points, Keilty is another I forgot we had, might be a good look. But agree, don't need to see wins (per se) but just some game time, the younger fellas feeling the pace and the bigger bodies and as you quite rightly said - no bloody injuries!
  10. Yeah I still have a soft spot for Bruce, he's such a passionate lover of all sports, a rare talent in Australia's media, and in my mind, totally unbiased and generally sticks to the topic of the day. Cometti, Bruce and Whateley are our best, although I think Cometti has since retired.
  11. Hey DL! Just wondering what we'd all like to see during the JLT? For mine: -Fritch and Weidermann having a solid crack up forward -Trac, Bugg, Jones, Oliver and ANB in the middle (pre-Geelong setups) -GNinja and Petty roaming on half forward Thoughts?
  12. Agree, Harmes has slid a little under the radar, but boy is he aggressive. He's about the only MFC player that has a Dustin Martin-like fend off, can break lines, and throws his body on the line time and time again. I see Bugg in the same vein, stringing solid aggressive and self-less (dare I say it, but very un-Watts-like). So here are my predictions for a few of the list: Harmes - kills it, tank is better than last year Petracca - disappoints somewhat, still too much pasta, his tank not quite there Hogan - delights with the new structured fwd line, really settles and finally starts kicking beyond 50m arc ANB - solidifies permanent B22 Oliver - terrifies all opponents, gains a second tag for most of the year Salem - has a few blinders, but no change Frost - makes better decisions and improves greatly
  13. Great post mate. This thinking/discussion is what I was hoping would be generated. I agree with what you've said here. I think one of the interesting bits of detail here is how it applies to the team. The other 'industries' that I referred to don't typically do 'total random' they're pre-defined actions, just executed faster and slightly more difficult to read. A series of plays, that the team can predict and apply at pace would be wonderful to watch. Can't wait to see the season proper, I truly hope goody and co have continued to search for ways push us further and make us more competitive.
  14. Slightly wrong mate. The real effects are highly subtle but amazingly powerful. Decision rules can be read and understood by the league, and used against us (Bernie Vincent kicking out to a pack aka 2015/16). The key to the OODA loop is recognising that your opponents have one too. I.E. whenever you Decide and Act, the opponent is stuck Observing and Orientating before they Decide and Act. So how do you make it work? You make your decision cycle (OODA loop) quicker than the opponent. Consider a mark, handball, side handball and a kick forwards. By the time you're on your kick, the opponent has scrambled to tackle the handlballer (only able to Observe and Orientate behind your action), only freeing up the marker who has run into space through anticipation - or rather - a well trained team action to assume that your fellow team mates will act in unison. He who has the faster decision cycle wins. Like I said, for militaries who apply this (second timeframes of advantage, for banking corporations, milliseconds on the hedge funds) It's that simple. As the opponent reacting to your initial action might fall two or three possessions behind. Meanwhile, you have a paddock in front of you to push forward. The frenetic possession pace that I referred to earlier has merit, only if used in this way.
  15. I'm actually interested in understanding whether we're going to continue to implement the frenetic high possession game plan that we clearly started last year, or whether we fall back to the conventional zone game plan leveraging key position players. Understanding the 'tricks in the bag' that we might implement, and what impact that has across the lines - and for training - would be useful, but likely to be closely guarded. My hope is that we implement something that resembles a high OODA-loop cycle (google it if you've never heard of it). This is essentially making informed decisions quicker, than your opponent can recognise, and taking the initiative, to the point where they become reactive and are forced to play catchups. The approach (furnished during WWII) has now been adopted by investment banks, militaries and other 'industries' where two or more competitors have it out for the advantage. Shall be an interesting year.
  16. The tragedy for me here, and I suspect many others, is that we were looking at a very positive off-season, all getting excited for what is shaping up to be a cracker of a Rd 1... I've held off commenting on this issue until now, but despite the absence of information, let's hope that the investigation is handled and managed as quickly and painlessly as possible for all concerned. Sadly the club, players, fans and the alleged victim and their family are all in a difficult position. No one wants to see this takeaway from what looks to be a promising year for us, further, no one wants the worst of the accusations to be true. But if so, we'll have to stand by the principals that we accept in our society and trust that the if any alleged incident did occur, that it is met with a swift and a balanced response, and that the club provides the best support possible for the young woman. I noted Goodys call for 'humble' players attitudes this season. I can only reiterate that respectful is also something the team and club will - no matter what the outcome - now, unfortunately take time this season to uphold in the eyes of the AFL community. The team and club now has some work to do, so let's get on with it.
  17. 'Artfully intercede' love it! But I do hope that Danger gets another weekend at burnies and gets just as frustrated as he did the day he was sent off crying.
  18. Imagine though, if the concerns were all genuine, and despite the FD/Coaches being disappointed, they accepted the concerns and moved on. Perhaps we should too...?
  19. I suspect differentiating between what is reckless and what is deliberate is the hardest part. The impact and location should be fairly easy to adjudicate. Panel or no panel doesn't matter if there is consistency.
