Exactly. Posters on here far more likely to go the other way and anoint players as future stars after a couple of games. Has happened with Newton, Harmes, ANB and White after their debuts this season. Kent and Vandenberg to a degree too. Not sure if all supporter bases are like that or whether we're just so starved of success we desperately try to convince ourselves that having done a couple of nice things, this means they're a guaranteed 200 game player for us.

Mackie is considering retirement, best case scenario is one more year, and as if Geelong would give up Menzel now that he's finally got himself right after 4 years on the sidelines. Good player with one year left in his career combined with the most injury prone (albeit very talented) player in the game doesn't get you one of the top 5 players in the comp.

Trading him for what, a third rounder? He's got far more upside than anyone picked at that range would, in an extremely shallow draft to boot. He wouldn't be on big money so if we traded him it's hardly likely to free up a war chest to throw at an "established elite player" either. So many on here seem to post without thinking.

And if the market thinks he is worth more than we do, then that is the best time to cash in on him. If we could get a top 10 pick or a player who is considered to be on the same market level as him (600k or whatever he is being offered) then it's a good deal for us. Having said that I'd also be happy to keep him.

I'd be setting our sights higher than going after blokes who can't get a game for their current clubs or are right on the fringes, unless they fill a really obvious gap in the list. For every Josh Kennedy there's 100 Ben Newton, Viv Michie, Aidan Riley's.

Why doesn't it sound right? 90 games average would be about right, equals about 5 years on the list. Cross, Lumumba, Vince and Jones would have played about 850 between the four of them!
