a lot of it comes down to playing finals. brock currently has 86 and is 23. another 8 year (31) at 20 games per year gets him 250. jones has 61 games and is yet to turn 22, could notch up the 250. bartram has 52 games and is just 21, could be a candidate if he gets back into the team and stays around. green as just turned 28 and has 193. if he plays another 4 years the 250 is available. if we play finals in those four years, he could get to 280 pretty easily by the time he is 32. other than those players, not many older players have the chance to get there, rivers, davey, miller, mcdonald, robbo, wheelan will all drop short. younger players ie frawley, grimes could get there but it is way to early to tell. this will all change of course if the afl introduces a 26 game season, like they are discussing. ps while etting this info, found the danny hughes page, where they have somehow managed to link his stats in with the old danny hughes, played his first season aged 1 apparently? haha

if i was single, earning his money i would probably drop that on a guitar too, just for kicks. what a life. at least he appears to be dorpping the cash on good causes and in 'real life' stuff rather than thousand dollar nights on the turps, an gambling it all away. although in the end its probably all the same, you'd hope he feels better about doing it this way.

younger but far more experienced side (about 20 games average per player).

4 to jurrah in consecutive weeks? could be a chance for a call up...
-
interesting that our midfield is one of (probably our major) poblem, and the biggest issue is lack of pace and finishing. brock, beamer and jones can all get the ball but are all slow, and none of them have elite disposal. we have added a couple of young mids ie morton, blease, strauss to our list who are quick with good disposal to supplement this core. morton is getting lots of game time, and has been doing well - lots of possies - however the others are too young to come on just yet. when these players start to come through, our midfield will hopefully produce better results. the players out will be the bruces, the mcdonalds, etc who should be the experienced guys carrying the load, but at the moment are players who just go. when we are challenging, brock, beamer, jones, davey, will be the older experienced players instead of bruce mcdonald and robbo.

isn't sheahan a mfc supporter? you would think he makes the efforts to see some games? and in his position as football journalist, you would have hope that he is watching at least 4-5 games a week. he should be able to see 5 live most weeks, either on tv or at the game, and would only need to watch replay of 3...

interesting. the season will be over well before vce exams start... is there any significance in the 5 game milestone?
-
the thing with it being in the following financial year is that it can become an attractive option for some business people (ie tax refund). i'm not sure if debt demolition went into the tax refundable sections, but i know the mfc has options to donate to that offer this.

i would've thought some players like jamar (who probably needs the match fitness, as he has only played 2 afl games), could've warrented a game.
-
allowing morton to be dragged to full back for 3/4s was terrible also. as soon as we put him in the centre we got run, and he got ball. i have no problems with him playing of a HBF, whether to provide drive or to teach him the defensive side of the game, but he should never be kept on the last line, it surprised me that we put up with it all day.
-
is it the physical side of the game (ie engine) or the off field stuff that is causing the club to hold him back do you think?
-
good point. jurrah does work well...haha

just when i thought this couldn't get any better, we've converted a pies supporter. who were you going for on monday? regarding LJ's development, i agree completely about the waiting part. I believe the footy dept is probably being a bit cautious with him, ie havn't given him a game yet, because so much of LJ's development isn't footy related. they know he can play footy, but they need to get him ready for footy, and the media hype etc. and he is probably in an interesting situation where he has the developed skill set of a 20 year old, but the coached club football nous of someone much younger. i imagine footy is a little different up there. i cant wait to see LJ get a game, but i am sure it will come when he is ready, and not just skill set. thought i'd ask, does he have a preferred name, or a nickname or anything? LJ is easy to say, jungarryi isn't quite as easy, but a shortened version could probably be effective. anything we can call out as he runs down an opposition player on the HFF and streams towards goal with the ball?

if buckley has a severe reoccuring groin injury (possibly op?), i would be tempted to put him in cotton wool for 3 months and get him over it. if it is just another strain thats a different story, but op would hurt his assets, and he would need time to get over it, as we have seen in the past. does anyone know what is actually wrong with him?

loans might work in soccer, where you are loaned from german first league to british second league. but its not the same here where the loaned player will be playing in the same league, against teammates possibly. what i do like is a mid season draft for vfl players, but unfortunately its very unlikely any vfl player will come in and dominate straight away, making this option almost worthless to the clubs.

disagree. watts seems like an affable young kid, who appears at this stage happy to do the hard work to get there. sylvia ALWAYS was the superstar kid with the blonde hair and the too cool attitude. there have always been stories about how sylvia would eat pies and hit the turps rather than doing the right thing, off and on season. sylvia has always struggled to get his body right, and while this isn't nessecarily his own fault, it contributed to people talking about him. if watts goes out and starts partying, hitting the turps every night and generally not giving a stuff about his footy, the attitude towards him will shift. but he appears to be level headed and mature beyond his years and people won't blame him for learning the game.

i thought exactly the same thing. absolutely classic post. someone needs to book mark that.
-
i get sick of it because too often the nomination isn't deserved for that particular week. it should be simple. best performance by an eligible player that week. regardless of how he played the week before. regardless of which team got a nomination the week before. regardless of whether that player has been nominated before. make it a fair dinkum competition, not a 'lets include everyone competition'.
-
perhaps carn dees. maybe in situations like that the player just needs to throw themselves fully into a contest or two, even if they are a bit late. he seemed to hesitate about whether to go in, or stay outside, which often meant he sat between contests. although with his frame he doesn't have to win his own ball. maybe it is just typical of an 18 year old, in his first game, worrying that he'll get in the way of the senior players, and not wanting to do the wrong thing? i know he is a gun, but perhaps he was simply a little overwhelmed and nervous? had a big week for a young lad.

Average Attributes Melbourne Attribute Collingwood 187.0cm Height 187.5cm 85.8kg Weight 88.3kg 24yr 3mth Age 24yr 2mth 76.4 Games 87.1 We averaged 1 month older per player yesterday. and perhaps more significantly averaged 10 games less per player. I'll trade malthouses 5 years collectively, for his 220 games extra experience. which one is more impressive? Total Players By Games Melbourne Games Collingwood 9 Less than 50 8 8 50 to 99 6 1 100 to 149 2 4 150 or more 6 We had more players with 50 or less games, and less players with more than 100 games.

thought he led well, and if played at full forward might have done a better job than robbo. what i noticed was that he was often in between the play. not quite a short kick, and not quite a long kick away. is this position the difference between playing at school and vfl and playing in the afl? longer kicks etc? it meant he was often not there at the marking contest.

reckon you could post what the weeks contributions are as well as the leader board, so we can see who got the actual votes each week?
-
bit harsh on jones? probably right about his disposal, but 4 clearances and 13 contested possessions? (which is about 12% of the teams total contested possessions)
-
Yeah, I might get burnt with that decision to give him votes, but I just thought he looked good when he had the ball. I was trying to work out who dick kicked the goals on, but a couple of different players were on him throughout the day, and tbh I'm not sure if it was a day where the backs could've done much more. Collingwoods forward line was always open; they really hurt us on the rebound. We were poor through the middle when we lost possession. I think this was because we were attacking up the centre and when we turned it over collingwood would spread, giving them space and we didn't go with them hard enough.
-
Beat me to it. At least jones had a go, so he gets 5 from me. Grimes looked composed, though i'm not sure how many goals were kicked on him. bruce would be next but doesn't really deserve it as he was wasteful. Brock could have got a vote, lots of possies, 6 clearances, but efficiency of only 54% sums up the sort of day he had. did nothing with it. Davey had 21 touches, did a bit, but too often was pushed onto his right foot. 6 Sylvia 5 Jones 4 Grimes 3 Bruce 2 Jamar (31 hitouts, pity none went to advantage that I saw. Collingwood had 17 hit outs total) 1 Frawley (at least he went hard I thought)
