Why can't we recruit players who can get the ball AND kick it?
-
They will be terrible for a while but won't fail. It took 20 years for Sydney to have an impact. This is a generational thing, it is about providing a team in the region for kids to loosely support. In 20 years those kids will be having kids of their own. A lot of the population are migrants, the next generation will be aussies and they'll be all over it. They will be a sink hole for 20 years but they have the potential to be a strong club in the long term based on supporter base size. The interesting thing to me is that they have made the same mistake Melbourne did: youth, youth and more youth. Hoard the best kids at the size of experience.

Devils advocate only: A statement like this is exactly what is needed to deaden the speculation and hype and also remove the focus from roos in the media. The other candidates can't be appointed, so now no decision can or will be made until after the season. Pressure off whether he is interested or not.

I've been banging on about this for a while now. I still think our biggest problem is combination of not running hard enough to make position and take an uncontested mark when no option is on, and not taking a quick option that presents before it closes up. I'd love to see us kick sort to a 15 m option quickly more often, I'd a long kick to contest is then forced we have the benefit of an extra 15 m. It seems to me that players from other clubs run harder into position for quick over the top cos and also that we don't honour these leads when they are offered this less likely to repeat and do it again. A great example of one was Sylvia against Sydney: busted his gut for 80 m to make position and take a mark on the southern stand flank at the Punt Road end. Didn't see any of these against Geelong. Remember of we have the ball the positron can't score. We should just hold it as long as we can and get confidence with ball in hand, even if we can't move it forward. Little chips forward and sideways to hard running leads, eventually gaps and options will own up.

No one is tasting Sylvia as worth anything. The question is what band of Free agency is he in? As one of our senior players, on probably pretty good money, with lots of experience he will be ranked in the 2nd or third tier. 1st tier gets a pick before your first pick 2nd tier before the 2nd round 3rd tier after 2nd round pick

The same, or close enough to, 22 blokes plagued two teams in two weeks. Week 1 we play Ok, week two we pay poorly. The difference isn't the players it's the supporters. We extrapolate form from 1 week to the next ten then change our extrapolation based on every data point. When we played Ok against the dogs and swans people were talking about is winning 4 more games. We get beaten by the cats now we won't win another??
-
I love how fickle we are. Put in some effort? We could win 5 more games. Have a poor day? We won't be a chance again!

yep and the were two reasons for this I reckon. A) we didn't run hard enough to provide uncontested options; we were constantly kicking to contests. B) the wet weather affected or ability to retain the ball; dropped marks were rife and we struggled in the contests mark column, compared to most weeks.

So we are getting smashed and Hogan still has 3?

Work Rate is not good enough at this level
deanox replied to Mongrel Dee's topic in Melbourne Demons
Or work rate ha picked up in defence bit it lacks when we have ball in hand. We don't run hard enough to create an uncontested possession option ie lead for a chip kick. -
This is a great pick up. I wonder if GWS have started doing all this crap to make it hard for the afl to give us a priority pick?
-
What can you see us getting with the mini draft selections? Last years mini draft were worth a top 3 draft pick, so what level quality of experienced players can we get for that? Genuine stars are off limits, and would potentially go to gws for pick 1 anyway. So we are looking at second tier players. I'd be happy to do it for a Taylor Adams or another young potential from expansion franchises, or would be interested in packaging it with pick 20 to get a better than second tier. Mini draft and pick 20 for Dangerfield? Mini draft for Adams? What are the realistic possibles?

Yeah damn Neeld and his stress fractures!

The tackles listed in the stats are only effective tackles ie those that dispossess the player with the ball.

I found it hard today, I have it ti the blokes who I thought out in and battled all day. Maybe I was generous to Nathan Jones putting him best but I seemed to notice him at the bottom more.
-
6 Nathan Jones 5 James Frawley 4 Jimmy Toumpas 3 Max Gawn 2 Matt Jones 1 Colin Garland Apologies to Byrnes, but he didn't impact on the second half.
-
He is sitting third in our disposal count. Yeah he isn't Joel Selwood but he hasn't had a horrid day compared to everyone else out there.
-
Agree, the wet weather is hurting us. Usually it is the opposite with wet weather evening tans up bit it is killing any chance of uncontested possession as we aren't clean enough.
-
Wet weather is hurting is we are dropping lots of marks. In good conditions Watts would have taken another 5.

Right now I am very excited that there is another day in the weekend! I was thinking today was Sunday!
-
No updates? Or are we all to excited with the Geelong game? Anything would be appreciated!
-
I'm not unhappy with our effort at the contest but our decisions with the ball (ie we are to show and need to take the first option) and our lack of "spread" into space to provide those options is the big problem. Geelong luck to contests only when going forward, to the 50 out deep. We kick to contests directly or of the back line. I don't care if we don't get the ball past half way but we need to get chains of disposals happening. 3 4 or 5, even if all are short and sideways, just get ball in hand.
-
We score a goal, why? A chain of uncontested possession.
-
What a shocking decision.

so loose that I thought dunn was playing in him!
