Some serious questions asked about Paul Roos ...
deanox replied to dazzledavey36's topic in Melbourne Demons
Sacking Roos now will do nothing but put us back another two years. It sucks. We suuck. But ride it out. Because changing the coach won't speed the process up. -
That was a terrible free kick.
-
Watts had been far from our worst today but he has made two bad mistakes this quarter.
-
Michie just out ran someone??
-
187??? God help me. Was there worse than 186?
-
We had great record until it changed it name to Etihad Stadium. Since then we've won none.
-
Honoring a contract doesn't mean he has to play for them. If he is traded to us in a mutually agreed trade (the only kind) he can honor his contact here. That being said i don't think we'll lands him this year.
-
PS that had been done quickly in my head. Mistakes in math? Probably. Please point then out and I'll correct them.

Yes agreed. So let's do a break down of a typical list. Salary estimates based on 2015 AFLPA CBA. Google it for details. Cap $9.9 million 4 rookies: total $220K 4 1st year draftees: total $260K 4 2nd year draftees: total $280K 4 on minimum base payments: total $324K Total for 16 players: $1.1 million Match payments listed as $3500 per game min for min salary players. 2nd year draftees can earn up to $5100 per game. For others it is negotiable. Let's assume $5000 average, which is probably under estimating. Yearly match payments: $2.5 million Total so far: $3.6 million Near and fairest bonuses? Let's assume 300K for ease. So the remaining 24 players have $6 million between them. The average salary of the remaining player is then $250K. Let's assume the top 5 get $700K. Then the average remaining salary is $131K. Even if we change it to 4 rookies, 8 draftees and 10 minimum salary instead. Inc match payments and b&f: $4.4 million for 22 players leaving $300k for each of the remaining 18. Or $155K each of the top 5 get $700K each. So tell me again why Howe should earn $550,000 or more?
-
$550 is more than 5% of our cap. That would mean he would be in our top 5-8 paid players. Seriously. Do you think he is worth that?
-
I disagree in that with 44 players on a list, approx half should be best 22.Where have the long term injuries to Bail, Jones, Terlich, Riley, Michie, Jamar, Spencer, King, OMac, McKenzie, White, Fitzpatrick been? Hardly any injuries the bottom third of our list. Everything to best 22 and the fringe.

I love this line: "MELBOURNE'S midfield depth has taken a hit..."
-
I suspect it answers it twice over.

Stu i reckon there are 3 key principles to think about during selection, in the following order: Pick your best players Form (and fitness) Match ups That is the precedent. To push out a player who is better than you they need to be horribly out of form and you need to be belting it. To get selected based on match ups (i.e. extra tall) you need to be in form and able to push out a best 22 player, based on that form. Obviously different players have different standings. So to push our Hogan is harder than pushing out Howe, for example. Right now, I believe the reason it is only the bottom couple that keep getting swapped is because Roos has settled on which players will be part of our squad of 40 in a few years and which won't be. The "won'ts" have been rotated. Gawn has replaced Jamar on form but is now best 22. There is little value in dropping someone who is otherwise best 22 unless someone has seriously good form. Further, by keeping the core 22 together for ad many games as possible they develop synergy and learn to play ads a team. Constant changes will disrupt that

We played dumb footy in the last 3 minutes. We kept kicking long to contests, when we needed to play possession footy.

I still think there needs to be a legitimate way to spend less than 95% of the cap so that clubs with crap lists aren't forced to pay their players the same as the premiers. I understand it is part of the players CBA but there is no reason why clubs can't spend as little as they want and then pay the remaining "cap space" into a central fund that is divided and shared by all 720 players equally at the end of the season. The players then get the exact amount of their CBA (no underpaying). No clubs are forced to pay overs to a crap list. Poor on field clubs have more salary room to chase other players. No club can "save money" by skimping on player payments. As all clubs are forced to pay 100% each year, it will create a bigger driving force to spend on players to improve on field. Surely this is really obvious?
-
Yes. If Prestia made a full recovery I'd be laughing. Prestia is a much better player and much more important player (i.e. play making midfielder) than Howe. I don't really want to lose both Garland and Howe though add i feel that will be disruptive to the backline.

I suggest that we want to keep him at a price that is reasonable. He is a valuable member of the 22 but is certainly not critical and we would be happy to let hon go for a price. Add to this the fact that other clubs may see extra value in him as a third tall plus he is marketable may mean we believe that we can get overs on the trade table and he beforehand he can get overs on the cash market. In such a case losing Howe would be a win win.

My understanding was that it was related to mitigating the higher risk of injuries associated with elevated adrenalin. BUT: The article is a few years old but relevant. http://m.couriermail.com.au/sport/afl/give-goal-kickers-a-break-on-strategy/story-e6frepf6-1226390013514 "Champion Data stats reveal that of the 2342 goals kicked in the first 10 rounds of the season, players ran to the interchange bench a combined 246 times. That's only 10.5 per cent. Melbourne is the club that uses the rotation-after-goal tactic the most. Its players have run to the bench after 15.1 per cent of its majors. Port Adelaide has the lowest, with 6.6 per cent."

I think Roos has decided that one of the most important things is developing the synergy of our best 22. This he is passing the core group together, rarely swings the axe (even when we are terrible). He has even given "future kids" a few more games than they deserve. It may be frustrating for those outside the core 22 but none of them are really the future. That being said, at times i really feel like selection has been poor for the appropriate match ups. Too tall or too short etc. And i feel that it has cost us on match days. Some games weer haven't given ourselves the best chance to be competitive because of this.
-
I have no problem with this. It's no different than the "pay per win " the club organises. A group of supporters decoded that they would like to donate to the cub in appreciation of our boys showing some sort of effort and fight on field. It is humorously aimed at raising $1000 to meet the cost of the fine, but will on fact be donated to the club footy department.
-
I was under the impression it was related to adrenalin management.
-
He doesn't walk when he nicks it behind. And his Richmond mates never give him out. But I'm sure off field he's a good bloke.
-
It should be so easy to fix though. A simple change "every time you get it, take the first option immediately, even if it is a short kick." It is painful because you can see him identify the option, but then he hesitates.

Tom Scully & Col Sylvia - A Heartfelt Thank You
deanox replied to Cranky Franky's topic in Melbourne Demons
Maybe in a measure of statistical impact but i think that Lamumba had been more important for us than Varcoe could have been, offering line breaking run off half back. I know he sometimes runs in a circle but i put that down to other players not being in position. And his unbridled attack means that we are looking to break lines and run forward off half back, where we have been particularly hesitant over the past years. In short, he had been a particularly valuable addition to Melbourne.
