The AFL will do everything they can to get Rowell and Anderson to the GC so there'll be no trade requirements attached. I think we should have gone to the AFL and told them if we get pick 2 then we'll trade it to GC so they get that outcome and we'd take King and the last first they'll have, no split required then
-
GWS just want to hold onto an early pick and Green, Carlton and Sydney have made it known they'll bid on green and that will push their picks way back. I reckon we could look at Bonar or ohallaran as well as the picks.

Bolton has gone back to the Hawks, so i wonder if that'll make it easier to shake Yze out?

WELCOME TO DEMONLAND - ED LANGDON
Red and Blue realist replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
This should be a straightforward trade, but I can see it dragging deep into the trade period. Freo will be chasing Tim Kelly hard and will be offloading BHill first, so I'd say we'll be waiting to see the outcome of those first, unless there planning on bundling our 2nd with one of their firsts (getting one for BHill) for Kelly, in which case it'll be one of the first trades done. -
Angus Brayshaw to Fremantle Rumours
Red and Blue realist replied to Lord Nev's topic in Melbourne Demons
If Gus's old man ends up as the CEO of Freo, then that'd be the only way he walks (IMO). Then we'd be waiting on the outcome of the Tim Kelly decision before we knew what they actually have to deal with. BHill going to the Saints is likely to net them pick 7 or 8 depending on the PP and big for Green. Would they then have to split one of those picks with say GWS or Bris to be able to have 7 or 8 plus (13 and 15) or (17 and 21), in that case would they need to give pick 7 plus pick 15 or 21 to the cats for Kelly. So Freo might only have pick 13 or 17 to trade to us, plus Langdon, would that be enough for Gus? If they don't get Kelly then they'd have picks 7 & 8, would Gus plus 22 equal pick 8 & Langdon? -
The 2019 Draft and Trade Targets Thread
Red and Blue realist replied to Nascent's topic in Melbourne Demons
Some fair information in the article, although very misguided on how they assess the value of draft picks/trades. Using the AFL coaches award is as bad as using Brownlow votes, this year there's only 2 out of the top 20 who aren't mids/rucks or spend a fair amount of time through the middle of the ground, in 2018 there was only 1 out of the top 20. Given we've traded for key defenders, who don't get a look in in these awards it's a flawed ranking system. -
Hope that doesn't cloud their judgement then, we had big interest in Ben Kennedy, Balic and McKenna in their draft years as well and none of them did much as recycled players. I agree that if he ever lives up to his potential then he'd be a very good pick up, but even when he hasn't been injured there hasn't been too much to get excited about. Take away that he was a first round pick and he'd be looking at a trade value of a 4th rounder at best.

Sam Frost - Contract status
Red and Blue realist replied to Red and Blue realist's topic in Melbourne Demons
I think this is the key next year, put strong leaders next to him who tell him where to be and when to go, even where to kick too. May and Lever are very vocal, which suits a guy like Frost and hopefully over a pre-season they'll all know each others games a lot better and build the trust a strong back 6 needs. -
WELCOME TO DEMONLAND - ADAM TOMLINSON
Red and Blue realist replied to dazzledavey36's topic in Melbourne Demons
Now that Coniglio is signed up I'm sure Tomlinson will be on the way out (just not enough $), given he's a free agent and won't need a trade he's well worth a look. I do think the giants play him out of position, I'd be trying to turn him into a Tom Lynch from Adelaide, a far roam high half froward (not really a 3rd tall and not really a wingman). Plus he has the potential to back up in the ruck as well, not for huge stretches of the game but to give Max a little rest. -
WELCOME TO DEMONLAND - ED LANGDON
Red and Blue realist replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Yeah it's a good bit of fun that calculator, and I think as much as it should be an easy straight up swap for our 2nd, the deal is likely to drag well into the trade period. Freo have an academy kid who is likely to get a mid teen to early 20s bid, but have only have a their first and a second rounder themselves, so I'm sure they'll be wanting extra picks to help with that. It might all depend on what they get for BHill and if they get involved with Kelly as well. You can throw all sort of scenario's into the tool and come out with all sorts of answers! -
Small forwards - what are our trading and draft options?
Red and Blue realist replied to Pates's topic in Melbourne Demons
Yeah I think Lockhart can become the equivalent of Sam Gray or Butler, neither are true crumbing forwards, more half forwards. We managed a prelim with Hannan, ANB, Kent and Spargo running as smaller pressuring half forward and Trac, Melk and AVB as the taller half forward options, so we might not need an out and out crumber, but a bit more luck given of those only Trac had a decent season, others were injured or out of form. -
Sam Frost - Contract status
Red and Blue realist replied to Red and Blue realist's topic in Melbourne Demons
First article in any media of Frost being re-signed https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl-daily-rolling-footy-news-from-across-australia-for-wednesday-august-28/live-coverage/267248fd4df505f60a9f82c0f11563e7 (behind paywall) No mention of length of term, also says Jones will sign on a minimum contract with incentives. Here's an extract: DEES SET TO LOCK IN KEY DEFENDER, STALWART Michael Randall -JON RALPH Melbourne full back Sam Frost will join Nathan Jones in soon committing to the club as Ed Langdon prepares to move to the Demons. Frost turned 26 today and while he has provided some hairy moments with his risky dashes from defence has the pace to be a quality shut-down defender. He had been told he is a wanted player, with talks underway.- 144 replies

Yeah but it wouldn't be a straight swap. For instance if we swapped pick 3 for picks 13 & 15 from GWS (after PP and academy picks) then we could swap pick 15, 41 & 59 for Langdon and Freo's 2nd (pick 26). Freo have Henry who lets say gets bid on at pick 20, they'll need 715 points for him, pick 41 & 59 combined are worth around 570 so they'd only have to go into deficet a minimal amount next year while keeping an early pick (Hill/Kelly trades pending). While we'd get Langdon and go to the draft with 13, 22 & 26.

Small forwards - what are our trading and draft options?
Red and Blue realist replied to Pates's topic in Melbourne Demons
We did pick up both Corey Wagner and Jay Lockhart in the supplementary draft period last year, while there not traditional crumbers they both have the ability to play that role. While I still think we need other options in this area, with an AFL pre-season that goes for more than 14 days Lockhart could fill that role. -
Normal rookies are essentially main list players now anyway, so yeah we'd have to go into the season with 44 players, made up of a combination of 38+6, 39+5 and so on. Walker is Cat B rookie, so sits outside this list and we have to elevate him to have him play, I think they can sit on this list for 2 years with no upgrades.
-
Agree with both of these, as it is now the Giants would have picks 13, 15 & 16 (assuming GC get the PP and Cogs goes). They might hang onto one purely for points reasons, with Green expecting a bid in the first 6 or so picks, although if Tomlinson goes as well you'd assume it might be for a second, so roughly pick 35 or so. Our pick 3 & 22 is overs in the draft pick point index, so then they should include a Bonar/O'Halloran/ZLangdon as well. We could then look at sending pick 15 plus 41 (our 3rd) to Freo for Langdon and pick 24, which still values him as a 2nd rounder, but would then give them access to early picks and points for matching their academy kid as well. So we'd end up with picks 13, 16 & 28 and Landgon plus Bonar/O'Halloran for picks 3, 22 & 41.
-
Might have been the plan all along, and from everything I've read the top 2 picks are set then it's a bit of a blanket over the next 10 or so guys. While there are some that have been talked about heavily on here, Ash and Young, there are others such as Kemp, Serong, Robertson, Stephens etc, who could be just as good. So a drop down the order might suit if we can get other assets in.
-
We would have gone through a fair external review when appointing Pert, so a full blow review again would be overkill. The Crows though have had CEO for over 5 years now, senior coach for 4 seasons and senior assistant for 8 years. Given we've made changes in 2 of those roles and the senior coach has only had 3 seasons then an internal review should be fine for now.
-
I'm sure he knows exactly what his role is, there's no way he/they'd go through an interview process without knowing that. Title are a bit arbitrary these days, I'm sure it was lets get this guy because of his footy brain and we'll worry about what he wants to call himself later.
-
I think we were always going to line up a more 'senior' assistant with the experience lost with McCartney, outside of Rawlings most of the other coaches are relatively young (experience wise) so an old head is always a good thing when the head coach is only early 40s.
-
Not a shock really, I wonder if we'd look at getting 2 first round picks - say trade with GWS who have picks 11 & 13 at the moment. Or will we try and use it to get a player plus a later first round pick? For example: - Ben King plus pick 17 back from GC - Langdon plus pick 6 from Freo, we might need to give a 4th rounder as well
-
You seem to keep ignoring that Sanderson, Harvey, Knights, Voss and until recently Ratten and McCartney have all been involved as assistant coaches (title might be slightly different) at clubs this year. Good football people are kept in the industry and rightfully so, if they still offer something. Not all are cut out to be the senior coach, for various reasons. I think you're trying so hard to bring down Goody that your reading way to much into the Richo appointment.
-
Think that might have been part of the reason why Goody threw some of the players around, Brayshaw to the wing, Harmes down back and Oliver forward at times. Oliver has that burst when he wants to use it, I reckon they want Brayshaw to run harder for longer in the Pendelbury mould and Harmes offers a lot of flexibility. Viney is a 1 trick pony, but that's not always a bad thing if they others learn a bit more about who's turn it is to go and who needs to look at other options. Fortunatley they only missed minimal games between them so going into another pre-season should know each others game that bit much better. I wouldn't be saying Treloar is a skilled outside player, he's an inside mid who's got a good burst a good tank but butchers the ball going forward. The Tigers also have Cotchin, so the comparison in player types is similar to what we've got, if as above we can get some of our guys to learn some extra tricks then we'll continue to be well placed in the middle, but we do need some running outside players to complement it, which is why we're going hard after Langdon.
-
I see a positive as being the fact that between Gawn, Oliver, Brayshaw, Viney, Harmes, Salem and Trac they only missed a combined 4 games. While we missed a lot of games in other areas of the field, our midfield got to spend a lot of time together, so while they weren't always in great form at least when that returns their not trying to figure each other out again.
-
Would come with a big cost, both draft picks and contract for someone who's clearly very talented but hasn't harnessed it to become a good player. He's really in the mould of Sylvia and Watts, he'd be the whipping boy on here in no time! GC should want a late 1st for him but on output is only worth a late second, so I think we're being counted out as we've only got the early 1st and our 2nd will be going for Langdon and is a bit high for Martin.
