Splitting Draft Pick 3
Interested in hearing the reasoning, I know he hasn't set the world on fire in his limited senior games, but have you observed his NEAFL or junior games? I think he'll be one to be thrown up that's all.

Farewell Sam Frost
Don't think Smith has quiet the aura that Hodge, Mitchell, Lewis or Silk have, hence his paycheck might not be as padded out or the option of coaching after retirement might not have been discussed as much as he wanted. Therefore those associating a straight swap with Frost can probably rule it out. .

Andrew Gaff
There's a fair emotional investment in Gaff from their supporters, so they might not be as accepting of it as you think. Plus as I said, the Eagles are going after Kelly without having to move on any bigger name players, so if I was one of their supporters then I'd be wanting both.

Splitting Draft Pick 3
Even if it's not a player coming to us, they might then consider future picks, for instance 3 plus next years 2nd for 13, 17 & their 1st next year. Might all depend on what other academy kids they have coming through in the future.

Andrew Gaff
Won't be happening, sounds good from our end but would anyone from the Eagles swap Gaff for Kelly? I'd say no, so there'd be no way they'd do that deal, unless Gaff changed his mind and was now desperate to return to Vic. There's nothing to suggest that West Coast need to cough up a good player to get Kelly, they have signed Nic Nat on a reduced deal and Kennedy is nearly finished so his wage has dropped, they might lose a few fringe players, like the tigers have over the last few years but don't need to move on any of their god players to make it happen - unfortunately because the above has merit from our end.

The 2019 Draft and Trade Targets Thread
More likely to be a player than the compo pick, GWS will need points for their academy kid who'll get an early bid. 3 for 13, 15 (of they lose tonight) and one of their young kids before they need a bigger contact extension over the next few years.

Farewell Sam Frost
One has the potential to win matches while the other can lose them. And that's not just because one's a forward and the other a defender.

Adem Yze - Assistant Coach?
A chance that other teams want to have a chat to him, or were waiting to see if there's anyone else available from one of the teams still in the finals. No point jumping early only to find a better candidate was available a week later. While it's great to have role filled straight after the season, as long as there filled before the players start learning new games plans etc. then we can wait.

Trade Jack Viney Thread
Only ex-dee who coaches a VFL side is Jared Rivers, and he moved to the cats the same year we draft Viney, so they never played together? Plus he would be long gone from the club prior to the injury so could be a very doubtful source.

The calumny of the AFL's priority pick policy
I reckon that'll be one of the big 'against' arguments the other clubs will bring up!

Farewell Sam Frost
Article that focuses on Jake Lever, but doesn't mention Frost once. That might tell a very big story. Mentions Lever, May, hibbo and Jetta and how excited they are to play together. No mention of Frost, who was our only defender to play every game. https://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2019-09-12/lever-keen-to-make-backline-a-force

Rory Laird
Maybe, I think he makes a heap of stuff up. Jon Ralph came out an hour ago and said Laird was definitely staying.

Rory Laird
I'd love us to go after Laird, Salem could move onto the wing and we'd strengthen 2 key positions instantly.
- If Adelaide sacked Pyke and made a long-term offer to lure Goodwin

Farewell Sam Frost
I suspect this might have something to do with us not giving Frost a contract yet. In the last game May played (Collingwood), he constantly looked like he was covering for Frost, and then Frost tunneled him in one of the contests. I wonder, and have said this previously, if May and Lever don't have full trust in Frost. In 2018 we largely played a zone defense, and guys like May, Lever, Jetta and Hibberd play best in a zone structure. Whereas Frost needs a direct opponent, otherwise he gets too lost. We had to change the way our defense played this year in particular early in the year, but if the game plan is to go back to more of a zone going forward, well the question would be does Frost suit that?

Post Season Members Forum
Yes the club should always be open to members, but they should always listen but not always act on that. The people in charge are paid big $ to run and operate both the club and the team, much like any other business. The customer is always right of course, but satisfying (in this case 52,000 members + other supporters) is impossible because there are so many different opinions.

Rory Laird
According to Dwayne Russell! Seriously can't believe any other media outlet would use him as a source, has to be the worst of all the commentators who makes things up to suit his port or cats agendas.

The AGM is really the time to get stuck into Barlett and Pert, if that's what you want to do. This forum is about the football, and given the year we've had is a brave and brilliant thing the club is doing.

The calumny of the AFL's priority pick policy
That's true, I do also like the idea that 1st year draft picks are given 3 year contracts with only the clubs having the ability to trade them, tying a young player to a club hopefully gets them more invested than someone who thinks they can jump out after a season or 2.

Farewell Sam Frost
I also think Frost has great speed when he's up and going, but he's that quick off the mark (might be related to his footy brain though). He regularly had players mark in front of him on the lead where a player with speed off the mark would have got closer. I imagine some want to push him to the wing to use that pace, but he's not that smart a player so would get lost too often.

The calumny of the AFL's priority pick policy
Talk that they'll also get some extra soft cap space too, I think a big issue is that not many decent staff are attracted up their. Both because it's seen as a bit of a basket case and Tony Cochrane is a difficult operator. I wouldn't be surprised if it's not pick 2, that whatever pick they get has the condition of being traded for experienced players.
-
Joe Daniher
If Daniher goes then I wonder if Sam Reid would be moved on. He has had injury issues in the past but played all 22 games for them this year. He'd be on a sizeable contract as well, having last signed in 2017 when he was chased pretty hard by some Vic clubs. He turns 28 before the next season so could have another 3 or 4 years in him?

Farewell Sam Frost
Whole lot of people on here jumping to conclusions. If he's been told he's a required player then clearly the footy department rate him, however the impose might involve the money and length of contract. Just because they rate him, doesn't mean they automatically give him a contract based on what he and his manager want. Wouldn't be at all surprised if his manager is doing all he can to pump up his value, he seems to be the one quoted in the media.

List changes who do we cut, trade or go after.
So thought I'd have a crack at what my ideal end of year changes/trade/draft period would look like. From the current list Lewis & Maynard have retired, Garlett & Keilty have been de-listed. I expect that JWagner; JHK; TSmith and Stretch won't receive contracts. With the addition of Dunkley, that means we'll have 7 list spots to fill. I do expect ANB, JSmith, CWagner, Chandler and Baker all to be extended (some may have been already). The Suns will get a priority pick, so our first pick will move back to 3. We will then trade that to GWS for picks 13 & 15 (moved back again for GWS's academy selection), we'll also end up with O'Hallaron as part of that deal. I'd love us to send ether pick to Adelaide for Rory Laird, but doubt that will happen. I'd be trying to trade our first round 2020 pick with the Dogs, they have an academy kid who is coming through projected to go top 3, so if they bet on us being bad next year, then they might trade pick 14 (as it stands now) plus their 2020 2nd round to us. We'd then have 13, 14 & 15 in the first round. We the trade pick 22 to Freo for Langdon as a straight swap. We also get Tomlinson as a free agent. We send pick 40 to Brissy for Tom Cutler. We then hit the draft with picks 13, 14 & 15, while also having Langdon, Tomlinson, Cutler & O'Halloran. Plus have an extra 2nd round in 2020, however having lost our 1st round next year.

GWS Surplus
The compensation GWS might get for Tomlinson (who is their only FA worth anything), won't be a factor in anything we do anyway. The talk above that we'd trade pick 3 for GWS's 2 first round picks and the compo are just wrong, we'd likely get the 2 picks and a player. GWS still need picks to pay for their academy kid so they'll be hanging onto any compo pick they get. I think it'll end up either 2nd round or end of 2nd round, so pick 32/33 at the earliest (with the PP and academy picks) or could be up to pick 40. The good thing is there's an extra incentive to cheer against the druggies!
