Sandy update?

So people are calling for youngsters to be brought in, but after 3 games they are condemning Garland as not good enough.

Without trying to be egotistical, but since I've been watching Melbourne - which is a fair while, I reckon that Rivers is the only player to have genuinely surprised me. I can't think of any other player since 1980 that's put egg on my face.

Garland aint carrying an omolette.

Garland could be a good player, but in those games he played for us he looked completely lost out there.

Did Messon play?

Pinched this from Marvin the Crows fan on the Melbourne Bigfooty board. Dunno if he has any clue about footy but at least he'll be unbiased.

Forgive the intrusion from another board, but I was at Box Hill today and thought Garland was pretty impressive. I'm stunned Bate wasn't listed as one of Sandringham's best - I thought everything he did was good. Yze used the ball well but I can see why he wont play for the 1s much this year.

Sauntner and Poyas were obviously great, but I thought Holland and Newton (in particular) did a lot of really good stuff across half forward and were prepared to sacrifice their games for Sauntner, who was hauling in everything (I think he had 6 or 7 by half time). Newton I thought was really clean with his hands, both marking (one absolutely beautiful one hander in the 3rd term) and dishing off handballs.

The disappointment for me was Meesen. As an Adelaide supporter I was keen to see how he went, and he got his hand on it in the middle a fair bit but he seemed to drift around without a real purpose other than that.

So meesen could be Jamar Jnr then ;)

Did Jamar get the nickname 'Russian' due to the visual of his stumbling into goal resembling a Vodka fuled drunken Russian?

He may be Bulgarian, but thinks the Russian sounds better, a la Nick "The Russian" Radev.

Forgive my naivety, but how come this Sautner guy is kicking bags of goals, but is never considered for seniors?

Am i a complete goose, but doesn't Sandy feed our senior side?

I gather he is old?

Please explain...

He's not on the MFC playing list, therefore is ineligible for selection. He is on our affiliate clubs list - Sandringham. He's about 29 and tears it up at VFL level, but is too slow and short for AFL. The gulf between the 2 leagues is enormous.

i remember the game where newton played on a wing last year and turned the game, think it was against collingwood...

why can't he play at centre half forward?

although with neitz out, i would like to see him play as a genuine full-forward....

I'd be interested to hear what Buckley's workrate and defensive efforts were like. I think that's what he needs to improve on to get promoted.

I can't wait for us to change to Casey. I'm sick and tired of seeing a goal to goal line of Lamb,Crowe,Summers,Poyas and Sautner no wonder the Dees are stuffed. Garland BOG is great news. Play him at full back I don't know how many times Carroll has to get a bath before they drop him, I'm sure Lamb is wondering why he didn't get the chances that Carroll gets every week. If Bate doesn't get a game this week I may lose the plot I'll have to kill someone, to play him in the 2's last week was a disgrace they may as well have played him in the under 12's as to do that. I can see why Maric may have lost confidence this week to star last week with 5 goals and still not get a game in the worst team in the AFL must be hard to take. I thought Bailey was suppose to be good for the young kids we'll I haven't seen it. How he can justify not playing Maric against Carlton but play Weetra in the first 2 games is beyond me?

Drawring a realllllllly long bow there.

C'mon 'Hannabal', not many players come on in senior footy as tall defenders as quickly as Rivers did.

Rivers started with us when we as a team were going well.

Garland is a good footballer who I'm sure will be a player for us.

Defenders like garland who have just been on our list a short while will struggle a little as they mature.

You'll watch him in the future I'm sure with pride.

Rivers started with us when we as a team were going well.

Rivers was drafted at the end of 2002 for pick 26.

He played his first game in 2003. We finished 14th.

I seem to remember after the few games he played towards the end of 2003 we were bagging him out.

I think your right. From memory, Rivers seemed out of his depth in those games

i give garland a bit more time because of his background. he wasn't a footballer. he has a lot to learn. i am willing to give him a bit of time, espec because he hasnt been around that long...plenty on the list should go before he does...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I rate Garland. His only weakness to me is he is a bit soft. But once he builds up his body he should be fine. I think he is very good reader of the play.

You guys should get down to Sandy & see the footy these young guys are showing us out there, you'll get a better perspective on what we've got & how their going.

would love too. unfortunately i work on sundays and play rugby saturdays. as it is its hard to balance getting to mfc games. so far ive made them all. have organised to work sunday night shifts for the next 10 weeks so i can get to the mfc games, so its a hard balance.

RE garland, i realise he is doing alright at sandy level, but i specifically mean i am happy to give him more time to get ready for afl level.

do you get down to sandy regularly? what do you think of col and how do you see his future?

Lamb?? He was drafted pick 13 and played 21 ave games. His highest disposals was 14..... 2 games in '99. 3 games in '01. 11 games in '02. And 3 games in '03.

Anybody who watched Sandy in 2003 knew Rivers was made of the right stuff. His 3 'gimme' games meant very little as his body was brutally underdeveloped.

Garland has better physical attributes but neither the class nor the nous of Rivers. He could follow the learning curve of Broady, who played a limited amount of Junior footy.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.
