CAC on Morton or Palmer

I want Palmer, I do, I rate him highly.

But I see an upside in Morton and know if the Tigers don't take him we will.

So im accepting him and gearing up to love him.

However, I still want Palmer. I want ball winners, Nathan Foley of Richmond seemingly had the same downfalls as what people say about Palmer, but a man who can win his own ball, bust through is extremely valuable, Jones and Brock are in and under, Bruce and Green are outside midfielders, this man goes in and under, gets it, then has space like abn outside midfielder, I really rate him.

For some reason, and it isn't the hair, when I see him he reminds me of woey.

Great effort with some skill to match, only I'll take it further, his skills are better than Woeys, so woey effort with more skill. Looks great to me.

Couldn't agree with you more Demons 32. We have enough outside players - we need more who are not only able to win their own ball but break the lines and deliver it onto the chests of neita, juice and co. Sure, Brock and Jonesy are great players and are more than capable of winning the hard ball, but they are not quick onballers. We need SPEED as well as strength over the footy - Palmer certainly fits the bill in that regard.

We may have some outside midfielders but we have no outstanding outside midfielders, Bruce is the closest but his disposal in sometimes very poor and the rest are just average AFL players. We are all guessing on the attributes we think each player in contention to be drafted has, I'm happy with any of the top 6 players that have been thrown around in the media as the best players in this years draft and hopefully CAC picks the right one and he turns out to be an absolute superstar, we haven't had one in many many years.

You need to remember that there is a signficant step up from WAFL to AFL. It's certainly encouraging (and a really good find; well done mo) to see a record like that, particularly that 5 goal game, but he wouldn't be the first bloke to be dynamite in the 2nd tier comp and not make it with the really big boys.

Also, I suppose you could use this on both the for or against argument, but Palmer actually nominated for the draft last year, and was overlooked completely. In hindsight, it makes you go . How could a bloke be overlooked one year, and then be touted as a possible top 5, and almost certain top 10, pick the next year? No doubt he has improved massively in the last year. But it also makes you question whether his current form is just that. And you know what they say 'Form is temporary; class is permanent'. I'm worried that Palmer might turn out to be a goer, and nothing more, at AFL level.

Morton, on the other hand, has class to burn. He moves smoothly (especially for somebody at 192cms), and as I keep saying, his right foot is a satelite-guided cruise-missile launcher. The one query I have about Morton is his attitude. By all reports (older brother) Mitch has a bit of FIGJAM in him, and I've heard Cale is also a bit too conscious of his fine ability. Confidence is definitely a good thing, but arrogance is a different beast. Nonetheless you can drum that out of him, if indeed he is a bit holier than thou.

To be honest I think this is a bit of a non-debate really. I have pretty much 0 doubt that if Cale is there at 4, he will be wearing a Melbourne jumper next season.

I think I read it in the Age the other day. I'm not saying you're wrong but it's not like I picked it up off BigFooty or something.

For the record, I'm not anti-Palmer. I'm not going to come on here at 10:30 on Saturday and start flaying the club if they pick him over Morton. I'm excited by Palmer as well, and I think he may be hot-to-trot as far as playing senior footy goes, whilst Morton could take a couple of months.

I just think Morton has more of an X-factor and is a more talented player.

The thing is Nugget, that whilst you can't deny he is impressive, his kicking is not so great. Don't get me wrong, this guy is no Daniel Cross. His left foot is neat and his right is... useable (unlike many left-footers). It's hard to really gauge it on the NAB championships, since WA had clear winners everywhere, including marking players up forward, but I can't recall him ever delivering the ball lace-out to leading players. I can't recall too many situations where he had to (or chose to) think about where he was delivering the ball. More often than not he seems to have the blinkers on. He is a 'straight ahead' sort of unit.

Morton for me demonstrates more thought and awareness when he uses the football. He is willing to switch the play when necessary, and he has the skills to execute the switch brilliantly. His right foot is brilliant. Beautiful raking 50m drop punts with excellent accuracy. He doesn't have the balance of Cotchin, but on the U18s showing (where Cotchin was admittedly down on form) Morton has more penetration in his right boot.

I'd take Morton over Palmer if he was available. It's much more likely that Morton's skills will lead to success at AFL level, than that Palmer's running will bring him success in the faster, tougher AFL.

I think Whispering Jack has already done that for Pick 4 and 14 DD (in two separate threads).

If you want a couple of conceivable sliders who would be excellent value at pick 21, I think you're looking at blokes like Patrick Veszpremi (my personal favourite) or Jack Grimes.

If you ask me Pick 4 is out of Masten and Morton. If Richmond do the smart thing and take Cotchin, then WCE will get Masten and Morton will be ours. If Richmond do a Richmond then they'll take Morton, WCE will take Cotchin and we'll get Masten (better player than Palmer, who's kicking is not nearly as bad as some tools make out).

Pick 14 is obviously a lot harder to predict, as it all depends who falls through. If Rance makes it past the Saints then I think he'll come into the equation. I also reckon Henderson will slip to 14. Veszpremi or Grimes could even come into the equation here, since CAC has announced the 'best available' strategy will cover 4, 14, and 21. Grimes is a very plausible choice as CAC seems to love leadership skills.

Can't wait till Saturday. Should be very interesting.

My perfect draft day will be 4:Morton, 14:Rance, 21:Veszpremi. Can't hurt to dream anyway.

Athleticism-wise, they are both run-all-day players, though I believe (tentatively) Morton has a slight edge in pace. Masten has a very strong athletics background so there is no doubting his pedigree in this regard. Morton's draft camp results in the 3km and beep test speak for themselves.

Thats pretty much where the similarities end. Masten is a short in-and-under player who is terrific at retrieving the ball from a scrum and using his hands to release a team-mate. If you wanted a comparison in the AFL think Joel Selwood, but with a slightly smaller body and poorer kicking skills. Masten seems to have a similar sort of ingenuity with his handball. Combined with his endurance, I can see him being a round-the-ground clearance machine. If his OP doesn't crucify him, he'll be a fine player. In spite of what a lot of people say I don't think Masten's kicking is that bad. I've heard it 'lacks penetration', but I'm not so sure. Against Vic Metro he let go of a 55m drop punt which was touched on the goal line only just by the out-stretched arm of the VM full-back.

Morton I've described several times already! Tall outside midfielder/utility with a sensational right-foot. He's a little soft, but his frame is quite lean at this stage.

Drew Banfield, who's an assistant coach of the WA under '18s, was just interviewed on SEN. When asked about the draft prospects, he mentioned Palmer, Masten, Rance, Myers and Morton as potential top 10. He then went on to say that Palmer and Masten were the standouts, based on what they'd already achieved at senior level.
