Disappointed we couldn't get a pick 90 for him.

From: http://melbournefc.com.au/

MELBOURNEfc today delisted defender Ryan Ferguson from its senior list as the Club prepares for its 2008 season.

Originally a fifth round selection (Pick 66) in the 2002 National Draft, Ferguson played 47 games over his five years at the Club, and was renowned for his fearless attack on the ball. Named as Best First Year Player in 2003, Ferguson was a dual Sandringham premiership player (2004 and 2006), and won the Troy Broadbridge Memorial Trophy in 2007 for being the highest Melbourne listed vote getter in Sandringham’s Best and Fairest.

Craig Cameron, General Manager of Recruiting and List Management said, “We would like to thank Ryan for his five years of service to the Melbourne Football Club. His courageous play was always an asset for us down back, and we wish him all the very best for his future endeavours.”

Thats the polite way of saying wasn't good enough at AFL level.

Mark Jamar must be breathing a little easier tonight.

I'll spew if he goes to Hawthorn......

**Thinks of the failed Sewell/Ferg trade of 2006**

Always incredibly courageous, and always tried his hardest, but unfortunately was not good enough to cut it as a KPP in the AFL.

Good luck to him in the future.

Very surprised to hear about Fergusson...but I thought Jamar (along with Miller) both got new 2 year contracts. I might be wrong but that's what I'd heard.!!!

That's a myth that exists on Demonland. Hawks never wanted any part of it and people carry on like it was a missed opportunity.

Still not as bad as the recurring myth that Brad Miller beat Barry Hall that night at the SCG. Hall kicked 2.4, it should have been 5 or 6.

it is a shame that trade didn't happen... sewell is winning B&Fs, fergie is getting delisted...

so this gives us 6 selections in the drafts, 5 in the national draft plus 1 in the PSD...

you always gave your all fergie, got the most out of yourself... good luck, hope you get picked up somewhere...

Got to echo those sentiments, Jaded.

If more of our blokes had an attitude like his, to compliment their talent, we would be a far fiercer team (as well as having a far more extensive injury list :P Who knew it was possible?)

I agree with Craig.......

So thank you Ryan for your unquestioning efforts for this club.

We all respected your courage and and with you good luck with whatever you choose to do in the future.

And amen to that Diablo :) !!!

well done mate..hope to see you playing for someone else in the future...you had some memorable games for melbourne and will be remembered for the right reasons...it's funny how great games from TJ and Ferguson in the last match did nothing for their postion at the club

Jamar already had a 2 year contract so it would be same same with him.

What the hell would the Hawks do with Ferg given their side??

Agree Jaded.

Means any other delistings are pretty unlikely.

IMO, a good decision.

edit: However, I think that if he'd had a good pre-season in the gym he could have bulked up and been a player B)

Brave and slow. A good VFL player, but not AFL standard.

Won't get picked up.

A good decision.

Good luck Fergs

two things stick in my mind re the Fergburger.. either some very timely and good marking...or effectively getting dacked. He wasnt quite up to speed with peripheral awareness at AFL level :)

thanks Ryan

It's also a myth that exists on AFL.com.au. I quote -

"Interestingly, Ferguson was almost traded to Hawthorn several seasons ago in a deal that would have landed 2007 Hawk best-and-fairest winner Brad Sewell at the Demons."

i think youve proven it's not a myth

Well said. He had great courage and a good mark which is probably why he got drafted but his awareness and lack of speed always let him down.

- Best wishes Ferg.

I guess now i have to change my profile name... Any ideas.

whats meesons nickname?

fergo was 300 weight session and 25kgs short of being a solid player. I watched him read the play, and always thought to myself "when he bulks up, he will be a great backman". Sadly he never bulked up, and injuries and time just wore him down.

I wish Fergo the best of luck elsewhere.

I am happy to see that Dean Bailey is removing the deadwood at the MFC. These de-listings are unfortunately about two years too late, but I suppose better late than never.

Fergs, I always admired your courage and your heart could never be questioned. I sincerely hope to see you succeed at another club .... all the best mate.

Finally, best news all day! :)

Get the feeling because he wouldn't go to Hawthorn in the trade for Sewell, he was on borrowed time. Probably a bad decision By Ferg not to go as he could have probably got a 3 year deal with Hawks.

TBO, I didn't mind Ferguson. For whatever reason, Daniher had it in for him, and was the only player i've heard Daniher publicly criticize. Whereas Nicholson was given chance after chance, Ferguson was always the 1st one dropped.

Wouldn't be surprised if another club picked him up in the PSD.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
