My guess is that the NFL took over all the ticketing decisions. I don't think the MCG/MCC had a say in how the tickets would be sold (including prices).

Luckily for me I only had 9000 people in front of me in the queue. No major issues to get my two tickets.

The advice is to be ready at least 30 minutes before the sale starts. They have a virtual waiting room, which you should join as soon as possible.

NFL team members were on a week ago - same day as MCC Members. Amex presale happens at most events.

NFL team members had a waitlist of 150,000 people....

I got on at Amex presale - couldn't find a seat less than $350 so decided i wasn't spending $1400 for 4 tickets and left

And why does American Express card holders get 1st go , I looked into getting one ,$400 fee the average sports goer in Melbourne ,supposedly the sport going capital on the planet does not stand a chance of getting a fair ticket ,maybe the heads at Totem Pole House might have rethink about the GF and let the real football public a chance at getting a ticket instead of rent a crowd being looked after .

Needless to say there have been books written on the ticket selling industry. No system has ever been perfect and a computerised selling system with windows open for such short periods is complex to say the least. If it means anything we're a lot better off than USA where scalping is legal. Just have a look at sites like StubHub and Viagogo.

And yes there are programs run by large subsellers that give them priority. Would they have been operating in a one off event like this. Who knows. One thing is that there would be a large number of tickets sold to tour companies. The international and interstate demand for this game is quite high

As fast as I understand these tickets are not transferable, so how could you even try to sell them?

This kind of thing is infuriating to me.

That you paid good money to get decent seats and then got let down by the fickle nature of their mobile ticketing system is an absolute disgrace. If they are going to insist on such a BS ticketing system, they should have a robust back door backup / work around at the ground for the less tech savey or when things stuff up. Things like using the credit / debit card of purchase and / or two factor authentication via the mobile phone No. of purchase should be more than feasible and adequate.

I'm moderately tech savey, but mobile tickets are still often so clunky. It was truly horrible in COVID, when I had to check in myself and X 2 kids under 11 and then battle the ticket app.

The things that they have added not to allow screen shots are a bloody pain. Before they put the stupid blue bar on them to make it near impossible to take screen shots, I regularly use to take them, because I'd had issues with passwords or network connectivity getting into the app (massive density of people in one spot will do that). Now that it's almost impossible to defeat via screen shots, last time I visited Marvel, I made sure that I logged into the app nice and early so I wasn't held up at the turnstile, only to find out that they now have a 15 second revolving barcode that doesn't auto refresh after you've been logged in for a while, so wasted time and held up the que while the gate attendant figured it out. I also get some anxiety that what would happen if my mobile battery was flat when I went in.

Since the club stopped automatically issuing physical membership cards, I've always requested them before the season, because it's so much easier and more reliable, particularly with getting the kids through the turnstiles.

This is the other aspect that infuriates me. There was a time when Aussie rules was far more egalitarian and accessible to people of all classes / financial backgrounds. We now have massive stadiums that could be packed most weeks but the AFL and the club's are so insistent on maximising profits that they'd rather price a bunch of people out of going to the footy.

Seeing massive sections of ground level seating on the wings 3/4 empty because they are for exclusively priced members and $50 - $100 tickets is a disgrace.

Our clubs response that "oh, we're sorry there's nothing we can do" is just bloody pathetic. Asides from the idea that they should be fighting for their members a day supporters, it's really poor customer service. Oh, sorry too bad, so sad. How about offering you a free upgrade somewhere in the MCG for one of our next home games (much as I am against this kind of premium seating model) that would be within thier control.

I'm now a 15 year consecutive years member (more like 25 - 30 if you count back in the 90s) having signed up in 2011 when we were putrid, continued membership in 2021, with x 2 GF garrentee tickets I couldn't use. Still I get shunted off to the what's left over seats at the MCG on home games, because I refuse to purchase anything more than. GA for the season. Would be nice if the club made a small gesture of better seats or access to King's birthday / ANZAC day occasionally or even just once.

Thanks Rod an absolute great piece of writing ,I love to see a GREAT DEE care about the club and is still passionate about all aspects of the game.,Im a Sparkie and AV tech but trying to navigate the AFL live app to access the tickets recently took me a couple of days there is 3 dots in the RHS of app that you have to open to get to AFL membership to gain access to my tickets with my Ticketmaster password Paid for AFL BRONZE DEES SUPPORT in Sept last year ,rang up Totem Pole House asked where my plastic entry card ,$10 more and about 4 to 6 weeks I might get it .What about older Dees who are on a pension, etc dont have a smart phone or computer, can't just rock up and buy a ticket now ,no wonder people are not going ,they make going to the so called peoples game TOO HARD .Get onto your local MP or the Minister for sport the more the general public arc up ,things will change.

Amex members get first go because Amex are a big sponsor. It's the same for the Aust GP and numerous other agents. If you are a card member it is great. And that is of course what it is all about.

Yep and everyone knows how Ticketmaster doesn't work.

Shameful and frustrating service to use.

Plastic cards and printed tickets for as long as I can help it. Don't want to rely on the digital thing yet.

LAYZIE ,unfortunately you Balls and me are considered dinosaurs ,a little red and blue plastic card with a bar code on it to get us in to the G etc is either too costly or just too hard ,I joined the AFL because I wanted to see a few games at Marvel with family members who support sides that is their home ground ,what really gets to me is how apathetic most people are and accept the system ,the system is wrong and its just about extracting more money ,how was our game on Sunday a ticketed game because C Patracca was going to drag an extra 30,000 through the gates ,rest my case .

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
