If you attend any NFL / NBA game, there is constant noise playing throughout stoppages in the game, and in some cases, during the game. Both of those leagues are among the most profitable sporting leagues in the world

Correlation does not equal causation.

I am a regular music concert attendee and I have never one ever heard or seen a football match played being played in between songs.

Bizarre comparison.

Favourite band Daz?

I just attended Red Hot summer tour up here in Wodonga only two weeks ago

Paul Kelly, Missy Higgin, Kasey Chambers, Cat Empire, The Cruel Sea, Jess Hitchcock.

Not a bad line up and was there specifically for Paul Kelly. The rest were good support acts.

My genre is mixed laze, I can go from classics to half modern. I say half because I really do find today's music extremely excruciating. I have found a new love for classics in general.

I attended Pearl Jam back in 2024 to Kendrick Lemar last year. So i can go from one extreme to another.

Did Elton John one year in Rutherglen. Bloody amazing that one...

"GREG, THE STOP SIGN!"

To the first part of a three-part Aussie classic....

CJ! CJ! CJ, you stopped another goal!

da da da you stopped another goal.

While true I'm guessing that if in the years since all the extra noise the attendances have dropped or there are a lot of official complaints (or even just many online) somewhere along the line those leagues would take notice and remove the music. I hate to say it but I'm guessing their audiences have not dropped.

All this talk around songs playing after a goal is kicked has missed the main benefit I see - when I go to take a leak at the 22min mark, to beat the rush, and someone kicks a goal while I'm gone - the song is almost like a score update before I get back to my seat.

Hmm , did Slash ever release any solo albums?

How would you feel if you’re at a concert watching your favourite band and between songs audio excerpts of footy matches were played?

If it were the last bit of the third quarter in the 2021 grand final I'd love it!

Some great stuff there, would have been a banger of a day. Paul always puts on a good live show.

I'm exactly the same and would happily go from a rock gig one week to a hip hop gig the next.

Used to get up to Brighter Days every year around this time. Always good fun.

Pet hate: folks who dismiss a hypothetical question without sharing their reasons why and instead throw adjectives around with no substance; nonsensical, facetious, etc., to wit: WHY is my example not valid?

Then engage in substantive debate, rather than resorting to a logical fallacy, a red herring if you will, and straw-manning. It doesn't require a lot of intellect to work out why your example is not valid and I shouldn't have to provide you a dissertation on why the examples are not one and the same. You can argue all you want and I'm sure you will, but you're the one creating a false equivalency and wanting to force an answer using a bizarre comparison.

As I've said, and I'll say it again, I don't have a strong opinion on the matter either way. Play music at the footy, or don't play it; I'm non-committal. Your inability to synthesise that point just makes your supposed comparison all the more disconnected and diverts away from meaningful discussion.

You tell Dee Boys to speak for himself since he’s the father of two young boys and not the father of all young boys and girls, then in the same breath you go on to describe how your own children feel about the gimmicks. Either you’re the father of all young boys and girls, or you’re the pot calling the kettle black.

Comprehension lacking here.

He spoke confidently and with authority about ALL kids preferences. Not his own kids preferences.

He then went as far as to say he promises "kids these days" (i.e. all kids) are not interested in the music or the americanisation.

That is a sweeping generalisation.

In contrast, I spoke only about my kids as just one example of a group that might have a different preference. I can comment on this because I know their preferences. I'm not in a position to make a generalisation about the preferences of all kids everywhere so I didn't do that. I only gave an example to suggest that preferences probably differ across the board.

So no, it's not the pot calling the kettle black, if you understand the meaning of the term.

Haha I did find it a slightly odd reply.

I did say that as well as a dad I’m a teacher. So for better or worse I’m surrounded by lots of different kids all the time, have got to know thousands over the journey, and therefore feel I’m reasonably well qualified to talk about them.

And then in my post I spoke about kids generally, without even mentioning my kids.

So not sure how my view is “quite narrow”, but that’s the world we now live in where people are happy to confidently tell people who have spent their lives in a certain field that they don’t actually have any idea what they’re talking about!

Narrow was the wrong term, agree.

It was the very blatant generalisation that your view of kids' preferences is THE undisputed truth that I took issue with. That they are uninterested in the 'americanisation'.

Your experience as a teacher may have you close to the mark, who knows - but worth pointing out that there will be many, like my kids, who do like the gimmicks and americanisation. It's this group that the Lions, North and now apparently us will be trying to target.

As for wading into your field, I did nothing of the sort....

All good mate.

Even as a teacher I can’t speak for ALL kids, of course.

My point was more a general frustration really about kids constantly being infantilised than specifically about goal music. Personally I’m not a fan of it but I am but one man!

Hope both your and my kids fall in love with the club and the game like their Dads have, however they get to that point 👍

Yep, can understand that POV.

Agree with the other posters point too. If the gimmicks keep some kids interested for longer when their team is at the bottom of the ladder, or long enough for a real football interest to emerge, then surely thats worth a try.

Bring me a sensical example and I'll get back to you. As I said, I'm agnostic on the issue, though I hardly think excerpts of music is beyond the decorum of an AFL match.

It could be worse I suppose…they could have that god awful Kiss-Cam like they have at American baseball games during the breaks in play.

Useless factoid: the guitarist/pedal steel player in my band, Ged Corben, along with his brother, were founding members of the Cruel Sea. They started out as an instrumentals band.

Wow! Who knew that a tiny little addition to the football experience as thirty seconds of music here and there would have so much mileage here!

Suppose I’d better get in on this goal music thread ‘cause I’m sure everyone is interested in what I think.

Not keen, but don’t really care. Living on the Sunshine Coast and as such go to a few Gabba games I can say with confidence the crowd love it and a lot of them are old Fitzroy supporters. Just hope to never hear Country Roads nor Sweet Caroline ever again.

To be fair, this provided a lot of entertainment at a somewhat recent Coldplay concert…

Indeed it did! What a way to get busted!

Listened to a podcast Code AFL discussing songs after goals & other things. Apparently the clubs decide, I didn’t pick this up on TV

but apparently St Kilda were running with the Knock Knock who’s there theme ..sounded bizarre. They weren’t fans of the songs but conceded “clubs are maybe trying to grow a younger demographic”.?

Here's one for them to try out (younger demographic may not get it 😁) ...

Knock knock

Who's there?

Ah

Ah who?

Werewolves Of London

Yeah, I'd feel so embarrassed being seen at a Coldplay concert. 🙄

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
