POSTGAME: Practice Match vs Richmond

Gees the Tigers must have a long injury list, what happened to all the guns they recruited in 2024. Smilie and Hotten etc?

I hope for Yze's sake they start to come on as they looked poor

Hotton will be out for a decent stint with stress fractures in his hip

I’d take a bag of Smiths chips over Petty.

Hnmm I have been critical of Petty as a forward but I thought he was pretty good in defence last night!

Idk mate. I wasn’t there but Lynch out ran and our muscled him a few times. His efforts are weak. Regularly gets out bodied and tackles slip. I honestly don’t think he uses the gym.

Name me one defender who would out body Lynch ..he is huge . When our defence worked as a unit we could contain him …one on one Lynch will outbody

most defenders .

Can’t tell if you’re joking. Lynch is frail and broken bodied.

Josh Battle, Lachie Whitford, Sam Taylor, Steven May, and Harris Andrews, and probably Tom Stewart to name just a couple.

Unfortunately, Petty is not strong enough or competitive enough.

Maybe May?

So you’re writing off these players on the basis of 2 practice games. I’ve been at both. CJ has played over the 2 matches ..1 game. New club..new game plan ..let’s give him some more time. I liked a lot of his game. There were a few supporters around us who were going to the three games (ho figure) & it was interesting to hear their comments…a lot more flattering than some of our supporters. Tholstrup was more than serviceable as was Laurie. Not everyone is a Windsor ..Langford etc but they were ok. Our game is a work in progress…some fantastic signs but def a lot to work on. Let’s be a bit more forgiving.,,

who said i was writing them off from 2 practice games?

cj has 76 afl games and i'd hope he plays in at least 5 more seasons with us, so could get up close to 200 games as he clearly has attributes to his game that are very good - they're just not his kicking, clearly, but he reads the play well and has speed and seems to have some strength in the contest

laurie has been on our list since before we won the premiership; i don't see an afl-level player whatsoever

tholstrup is a lovely long kick, a terrible short one, is not quick, doesn't seem to have much 'smarts' around him and is entering his third year

at the start of 2021 i probably said the same of sparrow; at the end of the year he was a premiership player

i hope to say the same of tholstrup at the conclusion of his third season too - like sparrow he's got a great attitude to his game, wants to bring his teammates into the game, but it think probably lacks the gut-running of sparrow at this point in time

Only radio from my end but what was wrong with CJ'S game?

Remembered that we need to take risks from half back. Sideways kicks and kicks down the line were from the Goodwin era and so so Passè

In the play all game with 15 possessions at 80% DE. On radio, they praised his game

bit like frosty at his best maybe should call it jiath ball

Can’t tell if I’m joking ..broken & frail !!!! I was literally a metre away from him ..he is huge ..he was running ..he was jumping. If you listen to the commentary they were remarking on his fitness. I don’t think he’ll go through the season without an injury but right now he is fit. Maybe if TMac didn’t have to play back up ruck & forward he would have been better & we don’t have the luxury of May so we had a rusty Petty who was never going to beat him one on one.

Agreed & even TMac but Petty was rusty & outsized & he was who we had.

We all see the game thru our own eyes. I honestly thought both Laurie & Tholstrup did some really good things. It was windy ..a lot of mistakes from both sides but in my humble opinion we looked a class above. I’m looking forward to watching their games develop over the next few months but they both looked ok.

All CJ has to do is learn to slow down when kicking my concern his kicking style he puts a lot of hight on it.

Of the lightning interrupted bits I manage the watch, the Dees looked good. I honestly think MFC are a chance to surprise a few and nab a newfangled wildcard berth.

Hopefully the coaches can teach CJ when to take risks and when not to

One thing is for sure, we won't be booting the ball down the line in a consistent manner (there's a time and a place, of course)

Fast-paced skills by hand and foot through the corridor is risky but the alternative way of playing just doesn't work

Retaining possession has to be the motto. Most of the time when we hoof it long we turn the ball over. So what's the point? We might as well take risks whilst retaining possession

But the players need to be able to have a mindset of defending within a split second because when we take risks, we can turn the ball over (as all the clubs can do)

The thing in CJ's favour is he's in the play and gets hold of the ball a lot - so there's lots to work with

His DE rating was 80% yesterday and that's from half back ... improve that to 90% and there's no real issue (clanger rating goes from 1 in 5 to 1 in 10)
